In our children's art programme BILDERBANDE (freely translated: art gang), individually illustrated books are published which impart with inspiring energy and beautiful details the colorful world of the arts to children.

Robert Walsers Biographie ist von spannender Rätselhaftigkeit. Alone of his contemporaries, J.M.W. Turner is commonly held to have prefigured modern painting, as signalled in the existence of The Turner Prize for contemporary art. On Turner's death in 1851 he was already known as an adventurous, even baffling, painter. Henry Neville and English Republican Culture in the Seventeenth Century is the first full-length study of the republican Henry Neville as country gentleman, politician, political thinker, rebel and libeller. It traces the development of Neville's political thought from the English Civil Wars to the Exclusion Crisis and beyond, while also challenging the way in which the history of ideas has been conceptualised in recent years by discussing political theory alongside cheap libels, shams and poetry. While studies of early modern English republicanism tend to focus on the Interregnum, Neville's Plato redivivus, which promoted a restructuring of the political order, was only published after the 1660 Restoration of the monarchy. This study therefore draws attention to long-term continuities in English republican thought and introduces the concept of anti-patriarchalism to focus on what Neville and other republicans writing before 1649 or after 1660 had in common. Robert Walser wurde am 15. April 1878 in Biel geboren. Er starb am 25. Dezember 1956 auf einem Spaziergang im Schnee. Nach seiner Schulzeit absolvierte er eine Banklehre und arbeitete als Commis in verschiedenen Banken und Versicherungen in Zürich. Seine ersten Gedichte, die 1898 erschienen, ließen ihn rasch zu einem Geheimtip werden und verschafften ihm den Zugang zu literarischen Kreisen. Nach Erscheinen seines ersten Buches Fritz Kochers Aufsätze folgte er 1905 seinem Bruder Karl nach Berlin, der dort als Maler und Bühnenbildner den Durchbruch erzielt hatte. In rascher Folge publizierte Walser nun seine drei Romane Geschwister Tanner (1907), Der Gehülfe (1908) und Jakob von Gunten (1909). Infolge einer psychischen Krise geriet Walser Anfang 1929 gegen seinen Willen in die Psychiatrie, deren Rahmen er nie mehr verlassen konnte. 1933 von der Berner Klinik Waldau nach Herisau verlegt, gab er das Schreiben vollständig auf und lebte dort noch 24 Jahre als vergessener anonymer Patient.

The eleventh-century papal reform transformed western European Church and society and permanently altered the relations of Church and State in the west. The reform was inaugurated by Pope Leo IX (1048-54) and given a controversial change of direction by Pope Gregory VII (1073-85). This book contains the earliest biographies of both popes, presented here for the first time in English translation with detailed commentaries. The biographers of Leo IX were inspired by his universally acknowledged sanctity, whereas the biographers of Gregory VII wrote to defend his reputation against the hostility generated by his reforming methods and his conflict with King Henry IV.
