        Face: shape and angle

        Helen Muspratt, photographer

        by Jessica Sutcliffe

        Born into a civil service family in India in 1907, Helen Muspratt was a lifelong communist, a member of the Cambridge intellectual milieu of the 1930s, and a working mother at a time when such a role was unusual for women of her class. She was also a pioneering photographer, creating an extraordinary body of work in many different styles and genres. In partnership with Lettice Ramsey she made portraits of many notable figures of the 1930s in the fields of science and culture. Her experimental photography, using techniques such as solarisation and multiple exposure, bears comparison with the innovations of Man Ray and Lee Miller. This book reproduces some of Helen Muspratt's most important photographic images, including documentary records of the Soviet Union and the Welsh valleys. The accompanying text by Jessica Sutcliffe is an intimate and revealing memoir of her mother that offers a fascinating insight into her life, work and politics. ;

        Heart of Mist

        by Katrin Lange

        A girl torn between two brothers. Regardless of which one she falls in love with it will be disastrous for the other. Christopher and Adrian have sworn that no girl will ever come between them again, because there is a sleeping monster inside Adrian, just waiting to hurt his brother. But then Jessa comes to High Moor Grange… Jessa would do anything to find her sister Alice, who has been registered as missing for five years. High Moor Grange is the first clue she has been given after all this time – but apart from a ruin shrouded in mist, all she finds there are the owners of this dilapidated manor house. Jessa suspects that they both know more about Alice’s disappearance than they admit. Christopher wants nothing more than to be rid of her, and constantly gets on her nerves with his arrogance – and even his warm-hearted brother Adrian seems to be harbouring some secrets. Jessica knows that she ought to stay away from the twin brothers, because instead of finding answers at High Moor Grange, she finds herself in danger of losing her heart in a battle against a 200-year-old curse. Dark, irresistible and deeply romantic – a modern Beauty and the Beast story by the queen of emotions!

        Das doppelte Gesicht Europas

        Zwischen Kapitalismus und Demokratie

        by Hauke Brunkhorst

        Die Entwicklung der EU wird oft als Verfallsgeschichte erzählt: Aus einem visionären Projekt wurde ein technokratisches Monstrum; angesichts der Eurokrise scheint die Stunde des kollektiven Bonapartismus gekommen zu sein, der den Kontinent mit einem Austeritätsregime überzieht. Hauke Brunkhorst präsentiert eine andere Lesart: Wie Dr. Jekyll und Mr. Hyde sind Vision und Technokratie aufeinander bezogen, die utopischen Anfänge sind in Gesetzen konserviert, der Europäische Gerichtshof stärkt die Rechte der Unionsbürger. Das europäische Projekt bleibt ein offener Prozess, der erneut in eine emanzipatorische Richtung gelenkt werden kann – etwa durch eine Mobilisierung der hochqualifizierten, aber prekär beschäftigen jungen Menschen in Spanien, Griechenland und anderen Mitgliedsstaaten der EU.
