        4 saints in 3 acts

        A snapshot of the American avant-garde in the 1930s

        by Patricia Allmer, John Sears

        Four Saints in Three Acts by Gertrude Stein and Virgil Thomson was a major avant-garde phenomenon of the 1930s, an experimental opera that nonetheless achieved remarkable popular success. Photography was a key element of that success, but its complex roles in the construction, representation and dissemination of the opera have hitherto received little critical attention. The photographic recording of the all-African American cast in particular affords a unique insight into the complexities of Four Saints in relation to the Harlem Renaissance and the New York avant-gardes of the time. This book, published in collaboration with The Photographers' Gallery, London, presents a wide selection of photographs of the cast, performances, and other material - many images reproduced for the first time - alongside essays by an international range of scholars exploring different aspects of the opera, including dance, fashion, music, and avant-garde writing, as well as photography.

        The First and Second Parts of King Edward the Fourth

        By Thomas Heywood

        by David Bevington, Richard Rowland, Richard Dutton, Alison Findlay, Helen Ostovich

        'Edward IV' (1599) was printed no less than six times up to 1626, and was one of the best loved plays of the early modern period, but this edition is the first since the 1870s. The play premiered at a moment when the representation of medieval history in any format was coming under the hostile scrutiny of the Elizabethan government. Yet the playwright produced a text which was at once generically complex (the play blurs the distinction between chronicle history and 'domestic' tragedy), brilliantly assured in its dramatic craftsmanship, and politically explosive. The text of this new paperback edition has already been used by the actors at Shakespeare's Globe when they gave the first London performance of 'Edward IV' for more than four centuries. By demonstrating the playwright's dextrous marshalling of a remarkable range of sources, and by examining afresh the dramatist's singular theatrical technique, this volume reopens an exciting if difficult play to a new generation of scholars and performers. ;

        Paul Celan. References

        by Petro Rykhlo

        The book contains articles and essays describing the life of the outstanding German-speaking poet of the 20th century, a native of Chernivtsi, Paul Celan. The book explores his Bukovinian roots (Bukovyna is a historical region located both in Ukraine and Romania), little-known pages of his biography, connections with the Slavic and Jewish groups, personal and creative contacts with such authors as Alfred Margul-Sperber, Ingeborg Bachmann, Bertolt Brecht. The reader will also take a note on the role and significance of music in Celan’s works. The book is published to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the poet's birth and 50th anniversary of his death. The publication is intended for literary critics, philosophers, cultural experts and anyone interested in the history of development of the 20th century German lyrics.

        The Legacy of John Polidori

        The Romantic Vampire and its Progeny

        by Sam George, Bill Hughes

        John Polidori's novella The Vampyre (1819) is perhaps 'the most influential horror story of all time' (Frayling). Polidori's story transformed the shambling, mindless monster of folklore into a sophisticated, seductive aristocrat that stalked London society rather than being confined to the hinterlands of Eastern Europe. Polidori's Lord Ruthven was thus the ancestor of the vampire as we know it. This collection explores the genesis of Polidori's vampire. It then tracks his bloodsucking progeny across the centuries and maps his disquieting legacy. Texts discussed range from the Romantic period, including the fascinating and little-known The Black Vampyre (1819), through the melodramatic vampire theatricals in the 1820s, to contemporary vampire film, paranormal romance, and science fiction. They emphasise the background of colonial revolution and racial oppression in the early nineteenth century and the cultural shifts of postmodernity.

        Edward the Second

        Christopher Marlowe

        by Charles Forker

        The introduction to this edition contains an analysis of the first quarto (including new evidence of its original dating) and a reconsideration of the play's complex relation to the Shakespearean histories that preceded and followed it. Charles R. Forker offers a discussion of Marlowe's use of sources, and presents a new argument for the drama's five-act structure. He delves into the conflicting and controversial opinions concerning the genre and sexual politics of the play, and also includes a full record of the stage history. Forker has collated some 46 editions (including the important, rare and usually ignored editions of Broughton and Oxberry in 1818). The appendices provide substantive variants from the Broughton and Oxberry texts as well as extracts from the sources. ;

        »Angefügt, nahtlos, dem Heute« / »Agglutinati all'oggi«. Paul Celan übersetzt Giuseppe Ungaretti

        Zweisprachige Ausgabe. Italienisch / deutsch. Handschriften. Erstdruck. Dokumente

        by Paul Celan, Giuseppe Ungaretti, Peter Goßens

        Die Fragilität der Dinge, die Bedrohtheit der Existenz und, als ihr Begrenzendes, das Unermeßliche, aus dem Alles aufsteigt, flüchtig aufglänzt, in dem es wieder versinkt – das ist die Erfahrung, aus der heraus Ungaretti nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg zu dichten begonnen hat. Sie ist der Grundriß seines Dichtens geblieben.« Mit dieser Ankündigung erschien 1968 Paul Celans übersetzung von Giuseppe Ungarettis La terra promessa (1950) und Il taccuino del vecchio (1960) in einer zweisprachigen Ausgabe im Insel Verlag. Nach Ingeborg Bachmanns nur wenige Jahre älterer übersetzung (1961) trug Paul Celans Engagement entscheidend zur besonderen Stellung Giuseppe Ungarettis in Deutschland bei. Celans Übertragung ist in Ungarettis Werk auf besondere Weise eingegangen. In die Originalausgaben der Zyklen hat er, mit Ausnahme weniger eigenständiger Seiten, seine übersetzung hineingeschrieben, den gedruckten Text mit seiner handschriftlichen Arbeit unmittelbar konfrontiert. Den Faksimiles folgen Celans Übertragung nach dem Text der Erstausgabe, sein Briefwechsel mit der Lektorin des Insel Verlages, Anneliese Botond, die ganz unterschiedlich akzentuierten Pressestimmen und ein Nachwort, in dem die Geschichte der Übertragung dokumentiert und Celans übersetzungskonzept analysiert und bewertet wird. Die Genese der Übertragung, die »tangentiale« Berührung von übersetzung und Original, wird in der neuen Ausgabe vollständig als Faksimile abgebildet. »Diese Dichtung hatte das Glück, von Ihnen meisterhaft gedeutet zu werden.« Giuseppe Ungaretti über Paul Celans Übertragungen seiner Lyrik
