Die erste öffentliche Aufführung fand 1905 in New York statt, wo nach einem tumultartigen Premierenabend gleich die Hauptdarsteller verhaftet wurden. Um welche Laster geht es hier? »Die Gründe, aus denen dieses Stück verboten und danach heftig umstritten wurde, kann man als viktorianische oder britische oder bürgerliche Heuchelei mißverstehen. Die Gegner dieses Stücks mögen selber geglaubt haben, sie kämpften gegen ein Stück, in dem die Prostitution verteidigt wird. In Wirklichkeit haben sie gegen ein Stück gekämpft, in dem die Prostitution erklärt wird; erklärt als ein Beruf, in dem die Ausbeutung der Frau deutlich wird. Mögen sie geglaubt haben, Sitte und Anstand gegen dieses Stück in Schutz nehmen zu müssen, sie haben in Wirklichkeit reagiert auf die Darstellung eines Geschäfts«, schrieb Martin Walser anlässlich seiner Neuübersetzung des Stücks.

Through its study of diabetes care in twentieth-century Britain, Managing diabetes, managing medicine offers the first historical monograph to explore how the decision-making and labour of medical professionals became subject to bureaucratic regulation and managerial oversight. Where much existing literature has cast health care management as either a political imposition or an assertion of medical control, this work positions managerial medicine as a co-constructed venture. Although driven by different motives, doctors, nurses, professional bodies, government agencies and international organisations were all integral to the creation of managerial systems, working within a context of considerable professional, political, technological, economic and cultural change.

        Jeder hat von Charles Darwin gehört, und fast jeder von seiner bahnbrechenden Evolutionstheorie. Volker Mosbrugger und Hans Traxler sind dem Lebensweg Darwins und dem Weg seines Werks gefolgt. Sein bedeutendes Buch »Über die Entstehung der Arten«, das 1859 erstmals erschien, hat ihn weltberühmt gemacht, aber es hat ihm auch Feinde eingebracht, denn sowohl seine Abstammungslehre als auch die Vorstellung, daß im »Kampf ums Dasein« nur die Tüchtigeren überleben, ist von Anfang an bis heute immer wieder angefeindet worden. Geboren wurde Darwin in einem englischen Landstädtchen, sein Interesse an der Natur und den Naturwissenschaften, insbesondere an der Biologie, war schon von Kindheit an groß. Er interessierte sich für die Gesteine, sammelte gerne Käfer, und 1831 brach er zu einer fünfjährigen Expedition mit dem berühmten Schiff, das den Namen Beagle trug, zu einer Reise um die Welt auf. Er besuchte Patagonien und Feuerland und die Galapagosinseln, wo er Vögel beobachtete, was ihn zu seiner Theorie anregte, und von wo er eine Schildkröte mitbrachte, die im Alter von 176 Jahren erst vor kurzem gestorben ist. Darwin selbst starb im Alter von 73 Jahren und wurde in der Westminster Abbey bestattet. Im Jahr 2000 wurde sein Bild auf die britische 10-Pfund-Note gedruckt, weil angeblich sein Bart nur schwer zu fälschen sei.

        Martin Walser wurde am 24. März 1927 in Wasserburg am Bodensee geboren. Nach seinem Arbeitsdienst erlebte er das Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges von 1944 bis 1945 als Soldat der Wehrmacht. Nach Kriegsende machte er 1946 in Lindau am Bodensee-Gymnasium das Abitur und studierte an den Universitäten Regensburg und Tübingen Literaturwissenschaft, Geschichte und Philosophie. Mit einer Dissertation zu Franz Kafka wurde er 1951 in Tübingen promoviert. Von 1949 bis 57 arbeitete er beim Süddeutschen Rundfunk. In dieser Zeit unternahm er Reisen für Funk und Fernsehen nach Italien, Frankreich, England, CSSR und Polen und schrieb erste Hörspiele.1950 heiratete er Katharina Neuner-Jehle. Aus dieser Ehe gingen die Töchter Franziska, Alissa, Johanna und Theresia hervor. Seit 1953 wurde Walser regelmäßig zu den Tagungen der Gruppe 47 eingeladen, die ihn 1955 für die Erzählung Templones Ende auszeichnete. Sein erster Roman Ehen in Philippsburg erschien 1957 und wurde ein großer Erfolg. Walser lebte von da an mit seiner Familie als freier Schriftsteller erst in Friedrichshafen und dann in Nußdorf am Bodensee.

        Charles Dickens wurde am 7. Februar 1812 in Landport, England als zweites von acht Kindern geboren. Er wuchs in ärmlichen Familienverhältnissen auf und lernte schon früh die Erfahrung von Hunger und Not kennen, als der Vater in Schuldhaft kam. Charles mußte für die Versorgung der Familie aufkommen und arbeitete, wie zahlreiche andere Kinder auch, in einer Lagerhalle und als Hilfsarbeiter in einer Fabrik. Nachdem die widrigsten Zeiten überstanden waren, setzte er mit vierzehn Jahren seinen Schulbesuch fort und arbeitete später als Schreiber bei einem Rechtsanwalt und als Zeitungsjournalist. Mit seiner Skizzensammlung Sketches by Boz (1836) und The Pickwick Papers (1837) hatte Dickens überraschend Erfolg und wurde schnell zu einem der bekanntesten Autoren Englands. Später erlangte er auch große Bekanntheit in den USA. Dickens erste Romane erschienen alle als Fortsetzungsgeschichten in Zeitungen, so auch eines seiner bekanntesten Werke, Oliver Twist (1837). Dickens war Herausgeber der Tageszeitung Daily News und der Zeitschrift Household Words. Neben der Schriftstellerei verdiente er sich sein Geld mit Lese- und Vortragsreisen in England und den USA. A Christmas Carol (1843), gehörte dabei zu seinem festen Leseprogramm. Charles Dickens starb am 9. Juni 1870 in Kent.

        The French empire at War, 1940–1945

        The French empire at war draws on original research in France and Britain to investigate the history of the divided French empire - the Vichy and the Free French empires - during the Second World War. What emerges is a fascinating story. While it is clear that both the Vichy and Free French colonial authorities were only rarely masters of their own destiny during the war, preservation of limited imperial control served them both in different ways. The Vichy government exploited the empire in an effort to withstand German-Italian pressure for concessions in metropolitan France and it was key to its claim to be more than the mouthpiece of a defeated nation. For Free France too, the empire acquired a political and symbolic importance which far outweighed its material significance to the Gaullist war effort. As the war progressed, the Vichy empire lost ground to that of the Free French, something which has often been attributed to the attraction of the Gaullist mystique and the spirit of resistance in the colonies. In this radical new interpretation, Thomas argues that it was neither of these. The course of the war itself, and the initiatives of the major combatant powers, played the greatest part in the rise of the Gaullist empire and the demise of Vichy colonial control.
