        Lady Susan

        by Jane Austen, Annabelle von Sperber, Angelika Beck

        Die attraktive Lady Susan sorgt für Aufregung in der Gesellschaft: Frisch verwitwet, weiß sie ihre Reize einzusetzen und kokettiert mit ihren Verehrern. Gerüchte über angebliche Affären machen die Runde. Um dem Gerede zu entgehen, zieht sie sich auf das Anwesen ihres Bruders zurück, um in Ruhe ihren Plan weiterzuverfolgen: einen neuen wohlhabenden Ehemann zu finden. Objekt ihrer Begierde ist der adrette Reginald DeCourcy. Es werden fleißig Intrigen gesponnen, um unliebsame Konkurrentinnen aus dem Feld zu schlagen. Doch als eines Tages ihre Tochter Frederica auftaucht, geraten Lady Susans Pläne in Gefahr … Amüsant und scharfzüngig erzählt die beliebte Autorin von amourösen und gesellschaftlichen Verwicklungen.

        Mindfulness and Character Strengths - A Practical Guide to Flourishing

        by Ryan M. Niemiec

        At the core of this hands-on resource for psychologists and other practitioners, including educators, coaches, and consultants, is Mindfulness-Based Strengths Practice (MBSP), the first structured program to combine mindfulness with the character strengths laid out in the VIA Institute's classification developed by Drs. Martin E. P. Seligman and Christopher Peterson. This 8-session program systematically boosts awareness and application of character strengths. The first section of the book consists of a detailed primer on mindfulness and character strengths while the second part goes into more detail about the integration of mindfulness and character strengths. The third section then leads readers step-by-step through each of the 8 MBSP sessions, including details of session structure and content, suggested homework, 30 practical handouts, as well as inspiring quotes and stories and useful practitioner tips. An additional chapter discusses the adaption of MBSP to different settings and populations (e.g., business, education, individuals, couples). The mindfulness and character strengths meditations on the accompanying CD support growth and development.   Target Group: Psychologists, consultants, therapists and counselors, and all those interested in mindfulness, positive psychology, and improving life.

        Harriet Martineau

        Authorship, society and empire

        by Ella Dzelzainis, Cora Kaplan

        Harriet Martineau responds to the strong revival of interest in her life and writing, exploring Martineau's controversial views through her innovative use of popular cultural forms-journalism, travel writing, didactic fiction, novels, translation, autobiography and history. This is the first collection of essays to revisit and reassess Martineau's leading place in Victorian culture and in the development of nineteenth-century liberalism. Distinguished contributors-including Isobel Armstrong, Lauren Goodlad, Catherine Hall, Deborah Logan and Linda Peterson-offer critical analyses of her trailblazing career as a professional 'woman of letters'. The essays collected here move from personal to global concerns in Martineau's oeuvre. The opening essays centre on her bold self-fashioning as a writer, while the second section focuses on the domestic complexities of laissez-faire liberalism in her economic and social vision. Finally, the volume analyses her provocative writings on race, Empire and history - from Atlantic slavery to the Indian Mutiny - demonstrating the international breadth and impact of a remarkable career. ;
