The result is, like Joyce's Ulysses, a comic rewriting of a classical epic, whose critique of the Army and the postwar settlement is sharp and assured. The Irwell Edition is the first publication of Burgess's forgotten masterpiece since 1965. This new edition includes an introduction and notes by Andrew Biswell, author of a prize-winning biography of Anthony Burgess.

This book provides a careful and systematic analysis of Anthony Ascham's career and writings for the first time in English. During the crucial period between the Second Civil War and the establishment of the English Republic, when he served as official pamphleteer of the Parliament and the republican government, Ascham put forward a complex argument in support of Parliament's claims for obedience which drew on the political thought of Grotius, Hobbes, Selden, Filmer and Machiavelli. He combined ideas taken from these authors and turned them into a powerful instrument of propaganda to be deployed in the service of the political agenda of his Independent patrons in Parliament. Four Saints in Three Acts by Gertrude Stein and Virgil Thomson was a major avant-garde phenomenon of the 1930s, an experimental opera that nonetheless achieved remarkable popular success. Photography was a key element of that success, but its complex roles in the construction, representation and dissemination of the opera have hitherto received little critical attention. The photographic recording of the all-African American cast in particular affords a unique insight into the complexities of Four Saints in relation to the Harlem Renaissance and the New York avant-gardes of the time. This book, published in collaboration with The Photographers' Gallery, London, presents a wide selection of photographs of the cast, performances, and other material - many images reproduced for the first time - alongside essays by an international range of scholars exploring different aspects of the opera, including dance, fashion, music, and avant-garde writing, as well as photography.

Heinrich Hoffmann, geboren 1809 in Frankfurt am Main, studierte Medizin in Heidelberg und Halle. Später arbeitete er in verschiedenen Frankfurter Kliniken, u.a. einer Klinik für Mittellose. Seit 1842 verfasste Hoffmann Theaterstücke, Gedichte und Kinderbücher. Bekanntheit erlangte er mit dem Struwwelpeter, für das er die Bilder eigens gemalt hatte. Heinrich Hoffmann verstarb 1894 in Frankfurt am Main. Mark Twain wurde am 30. November 1835 als Samuel Langhorne Clemens in Florida / Missouri geboren. Nach dem Tod des Vaters brach er mit zwölf Jahren die Schule ab und arbeitete zunächst als Lehrling in einer Druckerei, später auch als Journalist, Goldgräber, Publizist und Lotse auf einem Mississippi-Dampfer. Twain machte Reisen u.a. nach Europa und Palästina, bevor er sich in Hartford niederließ und heiratete. Neben der Schriftstellerei unternahm er auch Vortragsreisen in der ganzen Welt. Twain wurde insbesondere durch die Abenteuer von Huckleberry Finn und Tom Sawyer bekannt. Er gilt als einer der bedeutendsten amerikanischen Autoren des 19. Jahrhunderts und besticht besonders durch sein humoristisches und satirisches Talent. Noch zu seinen Lebzeiten starben seine Frau und die beiden Töchter, Twain selbst starb am 21. April 1910.

Kein Wunder, dass Künstler, Fotografen, Bildhauer, auch Karikaturisten Bilder von Joyce, von seiner Familie und seinen Kollegen schufen. Das Buch ist ein Dokument ihrer Faszination durch Joyce und von des Iren ungebrochener Wirkung bis in die Gegenwart. Viele Bilder sind verdientermaßen bekannt – von Man Ray, Berenice Abbott, Brancusi, Matisse, Jo Davidson, und Gisèle Freund –, andere sind sogar eifrigen Joyce-Verehrern unbekannt geblieben. Zusammengenommen bilden diese 90 Bilder die umfassendste Sammlung von Joyce-Bildnissen, die jemals für ein einzelnes Buch zusammengetragen worden ist. Wie wohl Joyce so einem Band begegnet wäre? Vielleicht in der Stimmung, in der er dem Maler Augustus John nach einer Sitzung schrieb: »Lob von einem halbblinden Pennypoeten wäre lächerlich, aber ihre Zeichnung ist ganz klar das einzige in diesem Buch, worüber man sich nicht streiten kann. Ich wünschte, ich selbst könnte die Linien besser sehen.« Doch auch Joyce hatte seine Grenzen, wie er schließlich einem der Künstler, die ihn malten, bekannte: »Ich hatte Bilder gern, aber jetzt sind die Nägel an den Wänden völlig genug.« Die Einführung schrieb Anthony Burgess, ein Fürsprecher von Joyces Werk, der kurz nach der Fertigstellung seines Textes starb. Bob Cato war ein preisgekrönter Buchgestalter, zu dessen Titeln Garbo, Swanson, Crawford & Dietrich; The Naive Surrealist (Über Oscar de Mejo), Corbusier, The Collected Poetry of Aimé Césaire und eine Serie über Life-Fotografen gehören. Er war außerdem Bildhauer, Maler, Collagist.
