        Mondnacht

        Hör- und Fernsehspiele

by Stanisław Lem, Irmtraud Zimmermann-Göllheim, Jutta Janke, Charlotte Eckert, Klaus Staemmler

        Stress Response in Pathogenic Bacteria

        by Edited by Stephen Kidd.

The ability of pathogenic bacteria to adapt to various chemical, biochemical and physical conditions within the human host and their ability to respond to stresses generated in these environments is a central feature of infectious diseases and the outcome of bacterial infection. This book covers the key aspects of this rapidly developing field, including the generation of stresses by the host immune system, bacterial response to reactive chemicals, and adaptation to environmental conditions of anatomical niches such as the gut, mouth and urogenital tract. It also addresses the increasing importance of different metal ions in the pathogenesis and survival of specific bacteria. With chapters by active research experts in the field, the book provides a comprehensive outline of the current understanding of this field, the latest developments and where future research is likely to be directed.

The man with three minds and other meaningful tales

        by Razvan Nastase

Children and adults alike will discover the magical world of Romanian folk tales. They have been retold by Razvan Nastase, who kept their weaving as magical as the original writers and folklorists intended. Razvan Nastase is himself a writer in love with children’s literature and, by retelling, abridging and adapting them, he made sure they will be read. They are as enchanting and captivating as they were a hundred, maybe a thousand years ago. Once upon a time… Like every tale begins, folk, cultural, or simply… retold. The tales contained within this book have been retold by Razvan Nastase, who kept their weaving as magical as did the original writers and folklorists who lovingly gathered them in ages past. Razvan Nastase is himself a writer in love with children’s literature, yet he remains acutely aware that in today’s neology era, some words have become so obsolete, that the kids would not grasp their meaning immediately. Therefore, by retelling, abridging and adapting them, he made sure they will be read. They are as enchanting and captivating as they were a hundred, maybe a thousand years ago. The illustrator Yanna Zosmer thought that every enchanted tale deserves a visual representation. About the author: Razvan Nastase (born in 1984) graduated from the Bucharest Faculty of Philology, specializing in Romanian and English. He has a master’s degree in literature, his dissertation tackling the theory and practice of editing. He made his literary debut in 2005 with a book of poems called Joc și așteptare (Game and wait), which was introduced in the anthology: 1984 – The last generation of the Romanian Communism, put together by Ion Manolescu. He has translated over 20 books from English to Romanian, some of which have been published by Curtea Veche Publishing and included in their children literature category. Since 2006, he has been writing book reviews for literary magazines such as: Romania Literara, Contrafort, Noua Literatură, Observator Cultural, Dilema Veche. He also writes tourism and travelling-related articles for Adevărul. By the same author, published by Curtea Veche Publishing: Royal lads and lasses

        Electric Machines in Agriculture

        Origin,Development and Applications

        by Kevin Desmond

As far back as 1873, experiments were carried out to see whether the electric trolley system applied to omnibuses could be adapted to ploughing and tilling fields. In 1913, 1,600 trolley/cable ploughs were in use across German farmlands. The arrival of the gasoline tractor relegated the use of electricity to electroculture, short haul farm machinery and lawn mowers. But it is only with the commercial availability of the lithium-ion battery during the last decade, that electrically powered drones and more recently tractors and earth movers are being seen as the way ahead. In this, the sixth in his seminal electric transport history series, Kevin Desmond portrays the life and work of the innovative engineers who perfected these e-tractors and agricultural drones.

        Plant Nutrient Disorders

        Diagnosis and Management

        by A.K. Sarkar & P. Mahapatra

It is difficult to forecast the serious consequences of damage to soil health on plants, animals and human beings. Agricultural soils across the globe are affected by erosion, degradation, nutrient depletion, pollution, organic matter decline and faulty management practices. This has resulted into ‘Plant nutrient disorders due primarily to imbalances, interactions, deficiencies or toxicities of one or more plant nutrients. Quality of irrigation water and environmental stress has a profound influence on this process. The present book provides an insight into the reasons for occurrence of such nutrient disorders, methodologies to monitor soil, plant, water and environment and ways to diagnose the problem through analytical and instrumental techniques. Widespread occurrence of secondary and micronutrient deficiencies in soils have resulted into low uptake of these nutrient ions by plants with adverse impact on human and animal health. Continuous cropping without due care of efficient soil and water use, have resulted in poor crop performances with low yields in many areas. This book attempts to provide answers to some pertinent questions on the subject i.e. I.Why plant nutrient disorders occur? II. Whether these are site or crop specific? III.How best one can diagnose the problem, by adopting sound analytical techniques? IV. What are the major concerns? V. How best one can manage such disorders to sustain soil health for crop production? Implementing scientific soil management programme requires good team work among scientists, extension workers & field staff with governmental support and farmers participation. It is hoped that this book written in a simple language will be very useful for the students and teachers of Agriculture, Horticulture, Forestry, Fisheries & allied disciplines.

A Handbook of Minerals, Crystals, Rocks and Ores

        by P.O. Alexander

The book is divided into four sections, minerals, crystals, rocks and ores. Section A incorporates nine chapterss, begins with presenting salient features of the earth--its structure and composition. The second Minerals and Mineralogy briefly tells about their diversity and their categorisation and introduces the interesting way they are named. Crystal chemistry the third is the heart and soul of mineralogy and deals in somewhat details about the building blocks of minerals -atoms and ions and the way they form diverse types of minerals are. It tries to tell why every combination of chemical compounds cannot result into a naturally occurring mineral. The fourth and fifth s deal with Properties of Minerals, physical and optical. The section describe various physical properties that are helpful in the identification both in hand specimens and as thin section under the microscope. These two s are adequately aided with a number of illustrations, photographs and photomicrographs to bring home the point. five deals with classification of minerals and their occurrence and forms a prelude to the next two s on descriptive mineralogy. Important silicate and non silicate minerals are described in s eight and nine. A brief description of mineral uses is dealt with in both descriptive mineralogy as well Section D on mineral deposits, however, the last , Mineral uses presents an overall picture and will be interesting as well as educating to students and even general reader. Section B is devoted to crystals and crystallography. one introduces the subject while two presents basic crystallographic elements. three deals with the main six crystals systems while also giving a preliminary idea about stereographic projection and x-ray crystallography. Section C covers petrology, beginning with introduction to science of petrology, rock nomenclature. two is devoted to the study of igneous rocks, including their forms, composition, textures, structures, classification and description. Sedimentary rocks is the theme of three while different aspects of metamorphic rocks including kinds and agents of metamorphism and classification and description of metamorphism. The last portion of this also considers metamorphism in the background of global tectonics. five, the rock cycle presents a concise summary of geological events that have shaped the planet earth. The last section D is what geology is all about for a man on the street and its significance in nation building--the Ore minerals. It begins with what ore is and its place in human affairs as a well as presenting the important terminology in economic geology. two deals with ore genesis and presents various hypogene and supergene process that carves out ore deposits from non economic materials. three, mineral deposits and global tectonics is becoming a very popular theme among the earth scientists. A brief introduction of the same will be certainly appreciated by the student community and prompt them for further study in this direction. A general survey of Indias mineral resources is the theme of four. It covers almost all of the commonly used ores, metallic, non metallic or fuels. The last of section D and the boom, Indian mineral industry: some facts and figures will present where our country stands in the realm of mineral resources. Latest available data of resources, production, export, import, organisations that matter and other useful facts and figures are presented.

        La magie de l'empathie

        Théorie et pratique

        by Dre Nicole Audet, M.D.
