Die Wiedervereinigung erzeugt in Deutschland einen neuen Zeitgeist. Ein gerade zur Formel erstarrender Gedanke lautet: Deutschland müsse jetzt, nachdem es seine volle Souveränität zurückerhalten habe, eine Rückkehr zur Normalität der deutschen und europäischen Üblichkeiten vollziehen. Die zweite Hälfte dieser Denkfigur benutzt den Begriff des »Sonderwegs«: Eine Abweichung von der »Norm« des europäischen Nationalstaats sei eine neue Variante des verderblichen Sonderwegs der Vergangenheit. Ist es nicht ein »Sonderweg«, wenn wir entschieden aus dem Korsett des Nationalstaats ausbrechen wollen und uns für einen europäischen Bundesstaat einsetzen? Ist es nicht ein »Sonderweg«, wenn wir uns weigern, Soldaten zur Befreiung aller möglichen Konflikte in die Welt zu schicken? Müssen die Deutschen nicht »erwachsen« werden, ein »normales Nationalgefühl« entwickeln? Peter Glotz wehrt sich gegen eine solche Philosophie der Normalisierung. Er fragt, ob die Deutschen aus ihrer nationalen Katastrophe nicht etwas Besonderes gelernt haben könnten. Er widerspricht der Sehnsucht, do zu werden wie die Franzosen oder Engländer, und setzt sein Konzept einer Zivil- und Technologiemacht Deutschland gegen die Rehabilitierung von Nationalstaat, Ethnizität und Machtstaat. Seine These lautet: Es gibt eine unmerkliche Verwandlung der Deutschen seit 1989.

Scale insects feed on plant juices and can easily be transported to new countries on live plants. They sometimes become invasive pests, costing billions of dollars in damage to crops worldwide annually, and farmers try to control them with toxic pesticides, risking environmental damage. Fortunately, scale insects are highly susceptible to control by natural enemies so biological control is possible. They have unique genetic systems, unusual metamorphosis, a broad spectrum of essential symbionts, and some are sources of commercial products like red dyes, shellac and wax. There is, therefore, wide interest in these unusual, destructive, beneficial, and abundant insects. The Encyclopedia of Scale Insect Pests is the most comprehensive work on worldwide scale insect pests, providing detailed coverage of the most important species (230 species in 26 families, 36% of the species known). Advice is provided on collection, preservation, slide-mounting, vouchering, and labelling of specimens, fully illustrated with colour photographs, diagrams and drawings. Pest species are presented in two informal groups of families, the 'primitive' Archaeococcids followed by the more 'advanced' Neococcids, covered in phylogenetic order. Each family is illustrated and diagnosed based on features of live and slide-mounted specimens, with information on numbers of genera and species, main hosts, distribution, and biology. For the important pest species, coverage includes information on the morphology of live and slide-mounted specimens, common names, principal synonyms, geographical distribution, plant hosts, plant damage and economic impact, reproductive biology, dispersal, and management strategies including biological, cultural and chemical control, sterile insect techniques, regulatory control, early warning systems and field monitoring. An additional complete list of scale insect pests worldwide is provided, comprising 642 species in 28 scale insect families (about 8% of the 8396 species of living scales known), with information on plant hosts, geographical distribution and validation sources. Beneficial uses of scale insects as sources of red dyes, natural resins and waxes, as agents for invasive weed control. The importance of their honeydew to bees for making honey, and as a food source to other animals, are included. Academic researchers, students, entomologists, pest management officials in agribusiness or government including plant quarantine identifiers, extensionists, farmers, field scientists and ecologists will all benefit from this book.

A number of species of Thysanoptera (thrips) are increasingly important crop pests in many parts of the world, as well as in some cases being vectors of plant disease. Communicating the known information about a species of organism is dependent on our ability to recognise or identify it accurately. This book is a completely revised and rewritten edition of the standard, widely used manual on these minute flying insects written by J.M. Palmer, L.A. Mound and G.J. du Heaume and published in 1989 as CIE Guides to Insects of Importance to Man 2. Thysanoptera, which provides a practical identification guide on a worldwide scale. The previous version posed problems for students in terms of fluency in English & knowledge of dichotomous keys. However, this thoroughly updated edition incorporates a new set of pictorial keys, which have been developed and used very successfully for training courses at the International Institute of Entomology and which will greatly enhance the ability of the non-specialist to identify thrips to species. Individuals of these insects can usually be identified only by examination under a microscope, often at high power. Within each species, individuals can vary in size, colour and shape and their appearance can be altered by techniques used in preparation. This booklet describes techniques used in the preparation of thrip specimens onto slides for identification and the means of identifying slide-mounted specimens most commonly encountered. It also introduces students to the biological diversity that is found amongst the Thysanoptera, their economic importance in terms of both damaging and beneficial effects, new identification techniques, additional information and taxa, glossary of technical terms, notes on each genus (described alphabetically within their families and subfamilies). Supplementary keys to species are also given within four genera that include several pest species (Caliothrips, Frankliniella, Scirtothrips and Thrips) along with new distribution records which have occurred since the publication of the first edition. It is an essential tool for applied entomologists and crop protection specialists involved in the control of crop pest thrips, and thrip taxonomists.
