        Occupational Blood-borne Infections

        Risk and Management

by Edited by Christopher H Collins, D A Kennedy

Many health professionals may be exposed to, and undertake the collection and handling of blood or its products, whether it be for analysis and diagnosis or more specifically for transfusion. Other workers in a variety of public services, such as the police and community care, also routinely encounter situations in which exposure to blood through such incidents as needle stick injuries is a serious issue. This timely book describes the diversity of risks faced within these differing settings and sets out the methods by which these risks can be reduced or managed. The authors describe the various blood-borne disease-causing agents and their epidemiology, including hepatitis B, C and D, HIV viruses and bacterial, protozoal and helminthic organisms. Prevention of infection is discussed thoroughly and existing standard procedures are reviewed. Detection, decontamination and post-exposure procedures are also examined. This book is an essential resource for all physicians, general practitioners, nursing and dental staff and laboratory workers who collect and handle blood. It is important reading for all those undertaking medical training, especially those studying for postgraduate qualifications in pathology, infection control and microbiology. It is also a valuable reference source for all public service workers such as the police, prison officers, and community and social workers.

        Coco Chanels Riviera

Vom Lieben, Leben und Überleben an der Cote d'Azur

        by Anne Courcy, Elke Link

Cherries: Crop Physiology, Production and Uses

by Edited by A D Webster, Norman E Looney

The sweet cherry is one of the most popular of temperate fruit crops with consumers and is grown commercially in more than 40 countries of the world, in temperate, Mediterranean, subtropical and arid regions of all continents. The sour cherry is cultivated in fewer countries, mainly in Europe and the USA, and is used mainly in processed cherry products. Until recently, horticultural improvement of cherries as a commercial crop has been slow, and major production problems such as bird damage, rain-induced cracking, and bacterial diseases, have remained. However, in the last 25 years, major developments have occurred. New improved varieties of sweet cherry have been bred which have larger fruit, are more disease resistant and set fruit more reliably. Improved sour cherry varieties have also been bred and mechanised systems of harvesting introduced. New dwarfing rootstocks are now being released. This book provides a comprehensive review of all of these topics, and many more. It covers all aspects of the botany, production and uses of sweet and sour cherries, and represents a definitive reference work for students and research workers in horticulture as well as professional fruit growers.

Illustrations of Quarantine Pests for Europe

by Edited by I M Smith, Anne S Roy

This book is a companion volume to Quarantine Pests for Europe, published originally in 1992 by the European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organization (EPPO) and CAB INTERNATIONAL (CABI) for the European Union. The previous book provides information on identity, hosts, geographical distribution, biology, detection and identification, means of movement and dispersal, pest significance, phytosanitary measures and a bibliography for all the quarantine pests listed by EPPO and the European Union, but does not contain any illustrations. A second edition of Quarantine Pests for Europe will be published at the end of 1996. The present book contains approximately 400 colour illustrations, most of them new in relation to the very first illustrations of the EPPO Data Sheets which appeared in Bulletin OEPP/EPPO Bulletin in the 1980s. The book covers most of the quarantine pests listed by EPPO and the European Union, including those which have been added to the quarantine lists since 1992. Thus it will be compatible with the second edition of the volume of text data sheets. The quarantine pests concerned are either not present in the Euro-Mediterranean region, or only present to a limited extent and submitted to official control measures. The sequence of presentation is as for the text volume, i.e. insects, nematodes, fungi, bacteria, viruses, parasitic plants. Within each chapter, the pest illustrations appear in alphabetical order. An index including scientific names and synonyms is included at the end of the book. Accompanying text is presented in both English and French. Although it has not been possible to illustrate every listed quarantine pest, this book provides a unique collection that will help phytosanitary inspectors, plant health officers, and others working in the field of plant quarantine, or plant protection in general, to recognize and identify quarantine pests. The book is published by EPPO in association with CABI, and is available for sale exclusively through CABI.

        Mango

        Botany, Production and Uses

by Edited by Richard E Litz

The Mango is one of the oldest cultivated fruit crops, having been grown in India for at least 4000 years. Mango is the most important fruit crop of Asia and its annual production is exceeded worldwide only by Musa, citrus, grapes and apples. The last decade has seen a rapid growth of mango production, mainly due to expansion into new growing regions but also to the adoption of modern field practices and cultivars. A wide range of fresh, mango cultivars are now consumed worldwide and are available year round. The Mango: Botany, Production and Uses, published in 1997, represented the first comprehensive examination of all aspects of modern mango production and research. Developing upon the successful first edition, this book incorporates a discussion of significant advances in mango research that have contributed to improved production and will be highly relevant for researchers and growers alike.
