View Rights PortalThe Nightingale is the story of a plain little bird whose beautiful songs bring her great fame, even winning her an esteemed place in the king's court. Eventually, however, after saving the life of the king, the modest nightingale chooses to return to her peaceful life in the forest.
The letters in this volume come from the period in Florence Nightingale's life that brought her lasting fame. The letters, written amid scenes of horror and chaos, to officials, family and friends, express her hopes and fears and the doubts and frustrations of her arduous service. ;

Going beyond individual accounts, it presents a comprehensive assessment of the UK's preparedness, lockdown measures and response strategies. A tale of resilience and devastating consequences, Unfit challenges the very foundations of the UK's response to the pandemic, leaving no stone unturned in its quest for truth. Finally, it looks ahead to ask what is in store for the future of the NHS.
The nightingale has returned from distant Africa and is looking for a spot to build its nest. And there are so many trees and bushes in the garden to chose from! Which of them would make a good home for a bird? Maybe a sour cherry tree, or a sweet cherry tree... or perhaps even a cherry plum tree? And what about a plum, or a pear tree? Each tree tells its story to the nightingale, describing its own special traits. What emerges from the stories of the trees is the image of the old gardener, clever and kind, who treats the trees as living creatures, talks to them and cherishes them greatly, along with his family, still living in the nearby house, honoring the trees and collecting their fruit. Air policing was used in many colonial possessions, but its most effective incidence occurred in the crescent of territory from north-eastern Africa, through South-West Arabia, to North West Frontier of India. This book talks about air policing and its role in offering a cheaper means of 'pacification' in the inter-war years. It illuminates the potentialities and limitations of the new aerial technology, and makes important contributions to the history of colonial resistance and its suppression. Air policing was employed in the campaign against Mohammed bin Abdulla Hassan and his Dervish following in Somaliland in early 1920. The book discusses the relationships between air control and the survival of Royal Air Force in Iraq and between air power and indirect imperialism in the Hashemite kingdoms. It discusses Hugh Trenchard's plans to substitute air for naval or coastal forces, and assesses the extent to which barriers of climate and geography continued to limit the exercise of air power. Indigenous responses include being terrified at the mere sight of aircraft to the successful adaptation to air power, which was hardly foreseen by either the opponents or the supporters of air policing. The book examines the ethical debates which were a continuous undercurrent to the stream of argument about repressive air power methods from a political and operational perspective. It compares air policing as practised by other European powers by highlighting the Rif war in Morocco, the Druze revolt in Syria, and Italy's war of reconquest in Libya.

This book examines the Thatcher government's attempt to revolutionise Britain's pensions system in the 1980s and create a nation of risk-taking savers with an individual stake in capitalism. Drawing upon recently-released archival records, it shows how the ideas motivating these reforms journeyed from the writings of neoliberal intellectuals into government and became the centrepiece of a plan to abolish significant parts of the UK's welfare state and replace these with privatised personal pensions. Revealing a government that veered between political caution and radicalism, the book explains why this revolution failed and charts the malign legacy left by the evolutionary changes that ministers salvaged from the wreckage of their reforms. The book contributes to understanding of policy change, Thatcherism, and international neoliberalism by showing how major reforms to social security could reflect neoliberal thought and yet profoundly disappoint their architects.
