        Unfit

The COVID-19 crisis and the future of the NHS

        by Hugh Pym

Reporting from the front lines of the pandemic, celebrated BBC journalist Hugh Pym takes readers on a gripping journey to the heart of the UK's COVID-19 crisis. He unearths shocking revelations about the failings of the British state and the Whitehall machine, shedding light on the consequences of woeful unpreparedness and misguided policies. This hard-hitting exposé draws on untold stories from the corridors of power, providing an insider's perspective on the drama, personalities and critical decision-making processes. Going beyond individual accounts, it presents a comprehensive assessment of the UK's preparedness, lockdown measures and response strategies. A tale of resilience and devastating consequences, Unfit challenges the very foundations of the UK's response to the pandemic, leaving no stone unturned in its quest for truth. Finally, it looks ahead to ask what is in store for the future of the NHS.

Wystan Hugh Auden wurde am 21. Februar 1907 in York, England geboren. Air power and colonial control

        by David Omissi

Air policing was used in many colonial possessions, but its most effective incidence occurred in the crescent of territory from north-eastern Africa, through South-West Arabia, to North West Frontier of India. This book talks about air policing and its role in offering a cheaper means of 'pacification' in the inter-war years. It illuminates the potentialities and limitations of the new aerial technology, and makes important contributions to the history of colonial resistance and its suppression. Air policing was employed in the campaign against Mohammed bin Abdulla Hassan and his Dervish following in Somaliland in early 1920. The book discusses the relationships between air control and the survival of Royal Air Force in Iraq and between air power and indirect imperialism in the Hashemite kingdoms. It discusses Hugh Trenchard's plans to substitute air for naval or coastal forces, and assesses the extent to which barriers of climate and geography continued to limit the exercise of air power. Indigenous responses include being terrified at the mere sight of aircraft to the successful adaptation to air power, which was hardly foreseen by either the opponents or the supporters of air policing. The book examines the ethical debates which were a continuous undercurrent to the stream of argument about repressive air power methods from a political and operational perspective. It compares air policing as practised by other European powers by highlighting the Rif war in Morocco, the Druze revolt in Syria, and Italy's war of reconquest in Libya.

        Die Geschichte von Doktor Dolittle

by Hugh Lofting, Reinhard Michl, Eike Schönfeld

        Zweisprachige Ausgabe

by Ted Hughes, Eva Clemens, Jutta Kaußen, Jutta Kaußen

        Crossing borders and queering citizenship

Civic reading practice in contemporary American and Canadian writing

        by Zalfa Feghali

Can reading make us better citizens? In Crossing borders and queering citizenship, Feghali crafts a sophisticated theoretical framework to theorise how the act of reading can contribute to the queering of contemporary citizenship in North America. Providing sensitive and convincing readings of work by both popular and niche authors, including Gloria Anzaldúa, Dorothy Allison, Gregory Scofield, Guillermo Gómez-Peña, Erín Moure, Junot Díaz, and Yann Martel, this book is the first to not only read these authors together, but also to discuss how each powerfully resists the exclusionary work of state-sanctioned citizenship in the U.S. and Canada. This book convincingly draws connections between queer theory, citizenship studies, and border studies and sheds light on how these connections can reframe our understanding of American Studies.

Russian Orientalism in a global context

        Hybridity, encounter, and representation, 1740–1940

        by Maria Taroutina, Allison Leigh

This volume features new research on Russia's historic relationship with Asia and the ways it was mediated and represented in the fine, decorative and performing arts and architecture from the mid-eighteenth century to the first two decades of Soviet rule. It interrogates how Russia's perception of its position on the periphery of the west and its simultaneous self-consciousness as a colonial power shaped its artistic, cultural and national identity as a heterogenous, multi-ethnic empire. It also explores the extent to which cultural practitioners participated in the discursive matrices that advanced Russia's colonial machinery on the one hand and critiqued and challenged it on the other, especially in territories that were themselves on the fault lines between the east and the west.
