An der Seite Georg Forsters erlebte sie die Mainzer Republik, als Ehefrau August Wilhelm Schlegels die Jenaer Frühromantik. Ihr Haus wird zum literarischen Zentrum: Novalis, Brentano, Tieck, Tischbein, Friedrich Schlegel, Goethe und Fichte sind dort ebenso zu Gast wie der junge Philosoph Schelling, dessen Frau sie 1803 wird. Ihre hinterlassenen Briefe sind Zeugnis eines ungewöhnlichen Lebens, das widerspruchsreich, erfüllt und unerfüllt war. Sigrid Damm hat die schönsten Briefe der Caroline Schlegel-Schelling ausgewählt und entwirft in ihrem Essay einfühlsam und voller Sympathie das Porträt einer Frau, die ihr Leben in historisch aufgezwungenen engen Grenzen zu gestalten wußte, die sich schon früh weigerte, im »Hauptzweck des Weibes« für sich den Hauptzweck des Lebens zu sehen.

The play showcases strong female characters who excel at rebuking the outlandish courtship of various suitors. Shirley's comic setting, London's Hyde Park, offers ample opportunity for witty dialogue. This is the first critical edition of the play, including a wide-ranging introduction and extensive commentary and textual notes. Paying special attention to the culture of Caroline London and its stage, the volume unpicks Shirley's politics of courtship and consent while also underlining the play's dynamics of class and power. A detailed performance history traces productions from 1632, across the Restoration to the present day, including that of the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1987. A textual history of the play's first quarto determines how it was printed and what relationship Hyde Park has to other texts by Shirley.

Lucie kann nur hoffen, daß »sie nicht mit dem da dort« gesehen wird, wenn er mit schmutzigen Händen und ausgebeulten Taschen, aus denen es heraustropft, vor der Schule steht, um sie abzuholen. Was da tropft, sind diese »Dingsbums« oder »Herrlichkeiten«, deretwegen der Vater immer wieder in den Wald geht, die die Mutter hingegen abschätzig »Mulms« nennt und schon lange nicht mehr essen mag. Lucie aber kommt ab und zu - wenn auch ohne große Begeisterung - mit in den Wald, und dann findet sie sogar viele der »Wäldersattsamkeiten«, weiß die Namen der verschiedenen Arten, kennt ihre Geheimnisse. Als der Vater wegen einer angeblichen Verschwörung gegen den König verhaftet wird, macht sie sich auf, um mit Hilfe der gefundenen »Dings« in die Hauptstadt zu kommen, von den Gefängniswärtern durch- und schließlich beim König vorgelassen zu werden, den Vater zu befreien, die Familie zusammenzubringen ... Peter Handke hat eine poetische und selbstironische Geschichte geschrieben über die Fremdheit und die Liebe, über die Annäherung an die wirklichen Dinge und das Geschichtenerzählen.

Caroline Schlegel-Schelling wurde am 2. September 1763 in Göttingen als Tochter eines angesehenen Universitätsprofessors geboren. Sie wuchs in einem intellektuellen Milieu unter Dichtern und Denkern auf und genoß eine hervorragende Bildung. Nach dem Tod ihres ersten Mannes heiratete sie 1796 den Literaturkritiker August Wilhelm Schlegel, trennte sich jedoch 1803. In dritter Ehe heiratete sie Friedrich Wilhelm Schelling, Philosoph und Professor an der Universität Jena. Ihre umfangreichen Briefwechsel erlangten als geistesgeschichtliche Dokumente der Romantik große Bedeutung. Sie schrieb u.a. mit Humboldt, Goethe, Schiller, Schlegel, Fichte, Novalis und Herder. Sie verfaßte außerdem Rezensionen, war Übersetzerin, Lektorin und Sekretärin für ihre Ehemänner Schlegel und Schelling. Caroline Schlegel-Schelling starb am 7. September 1809 in Maulbronn. Sigrid Damm, in Gotha/Thüringen geboren, lebt als freie Schriftstellerin in Berlin und Mecklenburg. Die Autorin ist Mitglied des P.E.N. und der Mainzer Akademie der Wissenschaften und Literatur. Sie erhielt für ihr Werk zahlreiche Auszeichnungen, unter anderem den Feuchtwanger-, den Mörike- und den Fontane-Preis. AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF A ZEN MONK

A story of bravery and false starts, Autobiography of a Zen Monk candidly recounts the author’s development from a highly mischievous Japanese boy into a world-renowned Sensei (Teacher) of Zen. While countless memoirs exist written by Zen students and teachers, few are as engaging and as tantalizing as Taisen Deshimaru’s. Looking back at his early life, growing up in Japan, from the viewpoint of his status as a Zen teacher in Paris, the author reflects on his earliest misadventures—from defacing a valuable painting of Bodhidharma as a child, to turning the “Zen stick” on a young monk during a retreat. Adventures abound with stories about alcohol and women, during his student years, and his activities during World War II in working for the arms industry in Malaysia, where he was sympathetic to the underground freedom movement. This first English-language translation of Taisen Deshimaru’s autobiography will be prized for its clear and honest documentation of this great master’s life. Many people all over the world have been influenced by Deshimaru’s Zen teachings, especially his book on Zen and the martial arts. This memoir fills an important gap in our knowledge of his teacher, Kodo Sawaki’s influence on the world of Zen. The story of how Deshimaru met Sawaki as a boy, even slept in the same room with him, and later received monastic ordination is the story of a lifelong friendship of two extraordinary characters in the history of modern Zen. Deshimaru’s influence extends beyond Zen practitioners, though, especially in those interested in the martial arts, as he touches on his martial arts experience as a young man and offers a look into the master’s early training. Additional interest extends to historians who recount the supposed “scandals” of Zen masters’ participation in the war effort. Although Deshimaru’s viewpoint is decidedly subjective, he was intimately acquainted with priests and generals alike, and approaches the difficult subject with a refreshing lack of judgmental disdain which counterbalances many other more lopsided works. Translator, Richard Collins, a longtime Zen practitioner, and currently the Abbot of the New Orleans Zen Temple, is a literature scholar and author of several books including No Fear Zen, Hohm Press, 2014. His knowledge of the subject matter and his finesse with language combine to make this book a delightful read for those who appreciate wellwritten memoir.
