Die Menschheit scheint vollständig ausgelöscht, doch die Besatzung eines amerikanischen U-Bootes überlebt unter Wasser. Die ausschließlich männlichen Besatzungsmitglieder merken, dass das weitere Überleben der menschlichen Gattung nun allein von ihnen abhängt. Nach neun Monaten unter Wasser ankern sie schließlich vor einer abgelegenen Insel im Pazifik und stellen fest, dass die Umweltbedingungen hier wieder menschliches Leben zulassen. Das Boot ist mit der neuesten Technologie ausgerüstet. Um das Überleben der Menschheit zu sichern, wurden sogar zwei Dutzend befruchtete tiefgefrorene Eizellen eingelagert, die dazu bestimmt sind, zu weiblichen menschlichen Nachkommen zu werden. Leider leben nun aber auf der Insel zunächst nur die mehr als einhundert Männer des U-Bootes, die ungeduldig darauf warten müssen, dass die kleinen Mädchen endlich zu Frauen heranreifen. Der Kampf über die Kontrolle der kostbaren „Ressourcen“ ist unvermeidlich. Die Männer müssen erkennen, dass die menschliche Natur auch hier nicht zu ändern ist. Der Autor Ron Adam hat als Kampfpilot und Flugausbilder in der israelischen Luftwaffe sowie als Marineoffizier in einen U-Boot eine beeindruckende militärische Karriere hinter sich. Heute ist er als Berater in der Luftfahrtindustrie tätig und verfasste bereits mehrere Bücher und Drehbücher. Ron Adam ist glücklich verheiratet und Vater dreier Kinder. Umstandslos fand man sich angeschlossen an Maiers Welt aus Wetterau, Familie, Fußball, Apfelwein, aus Thomas Bernhard und dem Evangelium nach Matthäus, aus Ängsten, Kneipenfreuden und -nöten, eingepackt in absurde Vorkommnisse und komische Erlebnisse. Jede Kolumne beginnt mit einem »Neulich«-Satz, die erste so: »Neulich war ich in Berlin. Das wird jetzt niemand weiter ungewöhnlich finden, aber ich bin Hesse, und mir ging in Berlin ein Wunsch in Erfüllung.« Dennoch handelt es sich um alles andere als ein Kolumnenbuch. Vielmehr nimmt Onkel J. – im Übergang von den ersten vier Romanen zu Maiers Projekt »Ortsumgehung« – eine zentrale Stelle ein. »Alles gehört zusammen, und für alles ist das Kolumnenbuch der Kern.«

Weintraub graduated with a degree in engineering and operations research from the Technion in Haifa, a highly acclaimed technical institute, and worked as a system analyst for Israel’s cutting-edge security infrastructure. After he followed his father’s advice to run his own business, Ron broke all Israeli records when he sold the 4th Dimension Software in 1999 for $675 million, a unicorn in modern terms, to BMC Software in Houston, Texas. Despite his impressive success, Weintraub didn’t slow down or retire. Instead, he kept busy and remained actively involved in various technology start-ups, founding more than thirty high-tech companies, including Jacada, Mend (formerly White Source), Cyboard, Guidde, and Eurekify. His dramatic and risky life story was depicted in Nordau to Nasdaq, which was translated and published in several languages. Ron Weintraub is married to Matia, an architect and town planner who also graduated from the Technion. They have raised four sons, all of them active in the start-up or academic scenes. They hope that their gifted grandchildren will also follow in their footsteps. Zvi Morik is a seasoned international publisher and editor with a solid academic background from Tel Aviv University in mathematical economics, stochastic processes, operations research, and game theory. His company, Dekel Publishing House (est. 1975), was initially an academic publisher that then branched out into various popular fields, such as martial arts and leisure activities. Its flagship product, the Israeli self-defense Krav Maga series, was successfully published and translated into English, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, and most European languages. Having noticed the key role that start-ups play in Israel’s economy and their benefits to society, he was delighted by the opportunity to write this book with Roni Einav, his charismatic youth movement instructor. Morik believes that this book will help interested readers to better understand the hidden magical facets of Israel as well as the spirit of its dynamic and often enigmatic modern start-up scene. Zvi Morik was born at an UNRRA DP camp in Odenwald, Germany, and immigrated with his parents to Israel as a baby. He is married to Pnina Ophir, a renowned Israeli copywriter. Crónica del alba is a novel by Sender with a Civil War background, like the popular Réquiem por un campesino español, also in this series. The author evokes his childhood in rural Aragón at the beginning of the twentieth century in a book which has a charm and something of the character of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. The young Pepe fights to believe in himself as a hero in the face of a world, and a father bent on putting him down. He is supported by his girlfriend, Valentina, who believes in him implicitly and often ends up in as much trouble as him. But there is something more here than scrapes and mischief-making. It is written by an older and disillusioned Pepe who has known real heroism and is now detained in a prison camp for Spanish Civil War refugees in southern France. The novel raises challenging questions about the loss of hope, how people cope with disillusionment, and the place of writing in that process. Moreover, since the novel reflects Sender's own childhood it sheds light on the complex relationship of fact and fiction in autobiographical novels. ;

They tend towards consummations of all kinds: from the marriages of meanings in puns, or of words in repeating figures and rhymes, to syntactical and formal finalities. The recognition of failure to reach such ends provides its own impetus to Hill's poetry. This is the first book on Hill to take account of his last works. It is a significant contribution to the study of Hill's poems, offering a new thematic reading of his entire body of work. By using Hill's work as an example, the book also touches on questions of poetry's ultimate value: what are its ends and where does it wish to end up?

Alone of his contemporaries, J.M.W. Turner is commonly held to have prefigured modern painting, as signalled in the existence of The Turner Prize for contemporary art. Our celebration of his achievement is very different to what Victorian critics made of his art. This book shows how Turner was reinvented to become the artist we recognise today. On Turner's death in 1851 he was already known as an adventurous, even baffling, painter. But when the Court of Chancery decreed that the contents of his studio should be given to the nation, another side of his art was revealed that effected a wholescale change in his reputation.
