Television and Irish society, 1960–72

This book explores the evolution of Ireland's national television service during its first tumultuous decade, addressing how the medium helped undermine the conservative political, cultural and social consensus that dominated Ireland into the 1960s. It also traces the development of the BBC and ITA in Northern Ireland, considering how television helped undermine a state that had long governed without consensus. Using a wide array of new archival sources and extensive interviews Savage illustrates how an increasingly confident television service upset political, religious and cultural elites who were profoundly uncomfortable with the changes taking place around them. Savage argues that during this period television was not a passive actor, but an active agent often times aggressively testing the limits of the medium and the patience of governments. Television helped facilitate a process of modernisation that slowly transformed Irish society during the 1960s. This book will be essential for those interested in contemporary Irish political and cultural history and readers interested in media history, and cultural studies. ;

The debate on the Norman Conquest is still ongoing. Because of the great interest that has always been shown in the subject of conquest and its aftermath, interpretations have been numerous and conflicting; students bewildered by controversies may find this book a useful guide through the morass of literature. In the medieval period writers were still deeply involved in the legal and linguistic consequences of the Norman victory. Later the issues became direcly relevant to debates about constitutional rights; the theory of a "Norman yoke" provided first a call for revolution and, by the 19th century, a romantic vision of a lost Saxon paradise. When history became a subject for academic study controversies still raged round such subjects as Saxon versus Norman institutions. These have gradually been replaced in a broader social setting where there is more room for consensus. Interest has now moved to such subjects as peoples and races, frontier societies, women's studies and colonialism. Changing perspectives have shown the advantage of studying a period from the late 10th to the early 13th century rather than one beginning in 1066. ;

Racist violence and armed resistance in the early twentieth-century U.S.–Mexico Borderlands

This book examines key moments in which collective and state violence invigorated racialized social boundaries around Mexican and African Americans in the United States, and in which they violently contested them. Bringing anti-Mexican violence into a common analytical framework with anti-black violence, A savage song examines several focal points in this oft-ignored history, including the 1915 rebellion of ethnic Mexicans in South Texas, and its brutal repression by the Texas Rangers and the 1917 mutiny of black soldiers of the 24th Infantry Regiment in Houston, Texas, in response to police brutality. Aragon considers both the continuities and stark contrasts across these different moments: how were racialized constructions of masculinity differently employed? How did African and Mexican American men, including those in uniform, respond to the violence of racism? And how was their resistance, including their claims to manhood and nation, understood by law enforcement, politicians, and the press? Building on extensive archival research, the book examines how African and Mexican American men have been constructed as 'racial problems', investigating, in particular, their relationship with law enforcement and ideas about black and Mexican criminality.

A cub is killed, and the male wolf, desperate to protect his son, is killed by a poacher's forgotten hunting gear. Without their tough leader, the "tame" wolves are in an unprecedented predicament. They meander for thousands of miles, and through grueling trials and tribulations, quickly grow into self-reliant hunters and defenders of the mountains and forests. A short biography of the cockerel. "Fighting Tiger" is about the extraordinary adventures of a chicken. Through the whimsical "training" of two urban and rural schoolchildren, this small rooster, which had once circled a tiger in a zoo, nearly became the "black horse" in the "cockfighting" competition. The Ice Fox used to be a hunting dog. After the hunting ban, the village has become a folkloric tourist area, and the ice fox, which used to be favored by the hunters, has been given a cold shoulder. Unwilling to be lonely, it even attacked the pets brought by the tourists, and broke into trouble again and again. Lonely hound finally recovered its nature in nature, found friends, and recovered the happiness belonging to a family dog.
