View Rights PortalThis volume on Norman Italy (southern Italy and Sicily, c. 1000-1200) honours and reflects the pioneering scholarship of Graham A. Loud. An international group of scholars reassesses and recasts the paradigm by which Norman Italy has been conventionally understood, addressing varied subjects across four key themes: historiographies, identities and communities, religion and Church, and conquest. The chapters revise and refine our understanding of Norman Italy in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, demonstrating that it was not just a parochial Norman or Mediterranean entity but also an integral player in the medieval mainstream.
This book uses the notion of the public sphere to produce a new view of the history of England in the post reformation period, tracing its themes from the 1530s to the early eighteenth century. The contributors, who are all leaders in their own fields, bring a diverse range of approaches to bear on the central theme. The book aims to put the results of some of the most innovative and exciting work in the field before the reader in accessible form. Each chapter stands alone in representing an important contribution to its own area of study and sub-period as well as to the overall argument of the book. Politics, culture and religion all feature prominently in the resulting analysis, which should be of interest to students and academics of early modern English history and literature. ;
The debate on the Norman Conquest is still ongoing. Because of the great interest that has always been shown in the subject of conquest and its aftermath, interpretations have been numerous and conflicting; students bewildered by controversies may find this book a useful guide through the morass of literature. In the medieval period writers were still deeply involved in the legal and linguistic consequences of the Norman victory. Later the issues became direcly relevant to debates about constitutional rights; the theory of a "Norman yoke" provided first a call for revolution and, by the 19th century, a romantic vision of a lost Saxon paradise. When history became a subject for academic study controversies still raged round such subjects as Saxon versus Norman institutions. These have gradually been replaced in a broader social setting where there is more room for consensus. Interest has now moved to such subjects as peoples and races, frontier societies, women's studies and colonialism. Changing perspectives have shown the advantage of studying a period from the late 10th to the early 13th century rather than one beginning in 1066. ;
Johannes Jansen ist 1966 in Ost-Berlin geboren und lebte in Freiburg, Leipzig und Pankow. Nach der Lehre als Graveur und der Absolvierung des Armeedienstes bei der NVA studierte er Graphik. Er lebt als freier Autor in Berlin. Norman Lindner, geboren 1969 in Halle, schloss nach einer Lehre zum Forstfachwirt ein Studium der Bildenden Kunst und Philosophie in Kassel bei Dorothee von Windheim, Alf Schuler, Harry Kramer und Hannes Böhringer ab. Früher arbeitete er als Grafikdesigner und Kunstkritiker für u.a. die taz.die tageszeitung und die Berliner Zeitung. Heute ist er als Autor, Künstler und Heilerziehungspfleger beschäftigt und lebt in Berlin-Lichtenberg.
Unter Stalin wurden in den 30er Jahren mehr als eine Million Sowjetbürger umgebracht, Millionen andere starben durch Zwangsarbeit, Deportation, Hungersnot, Lagerhaft oder während Folterverhören. Diese Verbrechen galten zu Zeiten des Kalten Krieges nicht als Genozid. Die hohen Ideale für die Stalin angeblich gekämpft hatte, verhinderten eine Auseinandersetzung. Zudem galt diese Verfolgung der eigenen Bevölkerung als Teil der Kriegsvorbereitung; der Ausgang des Zweiten Weltkriegs schien dieses Vorgehen zu rechtfertigen. Auch nach internationalem Recht galt der Mord an sozialen oder politischen Minderheiten nicht als Genozid. Norman Naimark erweitert die Kriterien für den Genozid – die UN-Konventionen von 1948 waren unter großem sowjetischen Einfluss entstanden – und kann so darlegen, daß der von Stalin befohlene Massenmord ein Genozid war. Er erzählt die erschütternden Geschichten der systematischen Vernichtung. Er betrachtet die Unterwerfung und Auslöschung der sogenannten Kulaken, den Holodomor, also die Ermordung durch Hunger in der Ukraine, die Unterdrückung und Ermordung von »Volksfeinden« und die Große Säuberung zwischen 1936 und 1938. Und er kommt zu dem Schluß, daß der Genozid – ähnlich wie der Holocaust – nicht ohne die Figur des charismatischen Diktators möglich war.

This is a translation of the eleventh-century Latin Annals of Lampert, monk of Hersfeld, with detailed commentary and introduction. No translation has hitherto been published in English, despite the fact that it is one of the best known of all the narrative sources of the Middle Ages, constantly mentioned in the English secondary literature. Lampert produced the most detailed account of the events of 1056-77 (the minority of Henry IV of Germany and the first decade of his personal rule), a period of crisis and rebellion culminating in the conflict between the king and Pope Gregory VII. He is widely regarded as 'the unrivalled master among medieval historians' and 'a superb story-teller', noted for his vivid characterisation and narrative. An English translation of this work is of the greatest value to teachers and students of medieval history and also of interest to the general reader of European literature.
The eleventh-century papal reform transformed western European Church and society and permanently altered the relations of Church and State in the west. The reform was inaugurated by Pope Leo IX (1048-54) and given a controversial change of direction by Pope Gregory VII (1073-85). This book contains the earliest biographies of both popes, presented here for the first time in English translation with detailed commentaries. The biographers of Leo IX were inspired by his universally acknowledged sanctity, whereas the biographers of Gregory VII wrote to defend his reputation against the hostility generated by his reforming methods and his conflict with King Henry IV. Also included is a translation of Book to a Friend, written by Bishop Bonizo of Sutri soon after the death of Gregory VII, as well as an extract from the violently anti-Gregorian polemic of Bishop Benzo of Alba (1085) and the short biography of Leo IX composed in the papal curia in the 1090s by Bishop Bruno of Segni. These fascinating narrative sources bear witness to the startling impact of the papal reform and of the 'Investiture Contest', the conflict of empire and papacy that was one of its consequences. An essential collection of translated texts for students of medieval history.
Nach Geist und Natur. Transmodern examines the global dimension of modern art by tracing the crossroads of different modernisms in Asia, Europe and the Americas. Featuring case studies in Indian modernism, the Harlem Renaissance and post-war abstraction, it demonstrates the significance of transcultural contacts between artists from both sides of the colonial divide. The book argues for the need to study non-western avant-gardes and Black avant-gardes within the west as transmodern counter-currents to mainstream modernism. It situates transcultural art practices from the 1920s to the 1960s within the framework of anti-colonial movements and in relation to contemporary transcultural thinking that challenged colonial concepts of race and culture with notions of syncretism and hybridity.

This is the first study of the Anglo-Welsh border region in the period before the Norman arrival in England, from the fifth to the twelfth centuries. Its conclusions significantly alter our current picture of Anglo/Welsh relations before the Norman Conquest by overturning the longstanding critical belief that relations between these two peoples during this period were predominately contentious. Writing the Welsh borderlands in Anglo-Saxon England demonstrates that the region which would later become the March of Wales was not a military frontier in Anglo-Saxon England, but a distinctively mixed Anglo-Welsh cultural zone which was depicted as a singular place in contemporary Welsh and Anglo-Saxon texts. This study reveals that the region of the Welsh borderlands was much more culturally coherent, and the impact of the Norman Conquest on it much greater, than has been previously realised.
