One Health for Dog-mediated Rabies Elimination in Asia

        A Collection of Local Experiences

by Vanessa Slack, Deborah Nadal, Sandul Yasobant, Florence Cliquet, Waqas Ahmad, Nihal Pushpakumara, Sumon Ghosh

Although an effective rabies vaccine has existed since 1885, rabies continues to kill an estimated 59,000 people, and uncalculated animals, every year. Sixty per cent of these human deaths occur in Asia. To work towards the global target of eliminating dog-mediated rabies by 2030, the rabies community is applying the One Health approach. Written by a multidisciplinary group of scholars and rabies control programme specialists, this book is a collection of experiences and observations on the challenges and successes along the path to rabies control and prevention in Asia. It: - Grounds chapters in solid scientific theory, but retains a direct, practice-focused and inspirational approach; - Provides numerous examples of lessons learned and experience-based knowledge gained across countries at different levels of rabies control and elimination; - Brings together and highlights the practices of a strong, international rabies network that works according to the One Health concept. Covering perspectives from almost a dozen Asian countries and a wide range of sectors and disciplines, such as healthcare facilities, veterinary services, laboratories, academia, public health institutes and wildlife research centres, this book is an invaluable resource for rabies scholars and practitioners, but also those working in the wider fields of disease control and cross-sectoral One Health.

Biological and Environmental Control of Disease Vectors

by Sandy Cairncross, Ulrike Fillinger, S K Ghosh, Bart Knols, Steve Lindsay, Sarah Moore, Yen Nguyen, Annabel Howard, Jo Lines. Edited by Mary Cameron, Lena Lorenz.

Covering the theory and practice of non-insecticidal control of insect vectors of human disease, this book provides an overview of methods including the use of botanical biocides and insect-derived semiochemicals, with an overall focus on integrated vector management strategies. While the mainstay of malaria control programmes relies on pesticides, there is a resurgence in the research and utilisation of non-insecticidal control measures due to concerns over rapid development and spread of insecticide resistance, and long-term environmental impacts. This book provides examples of successful applications in the field and recommendations for future use.

        GENDER DISPARITY

        by Ratan Ghosh

Gender discrimination, a social curse, is discussed, debated and defined in many forms in art and culture across the globe. Poetry and art works can be a convenient medium for expressing gender related injustice and defining issues like male dominance, marginalization, women empowerment, early child marriage, sexual harassment, social taboos against women and so on. The present book is a combination of art works and poetry containing twelve art works and forty poems collected, chosen the best and included. Each and every work as chosen for the book defines and describes the picturesque descriptions of gender discriminations still visible in the society. All the poems reflect the inmost feelings of the poets and the artists. The editor seems to be quite meticulous in selection of the works of the co-authors. The book unites the East and the West in one platform reflecting various forms of gender discrimination as visible in the post-modern era. Thanks to the Editor and co-author Ratan Ghosh for such noble initiative.

Numerical Methods and Models in Earth Science

        by Parthasarathi Ghosh

"Understanding earth systems and its dynamic behavior requires objective insights into the complex observational data sets and their interrelationships. Drawing meaningful inferences from such data is not always an easy task as the deterministic relationships between various geological variables often remain obscured. These interrelationships need to be determined empirically through the analysis of a large set of data and validated through numerical simulations. The ever widening horizon of techniques of numerical analysis and simulation now provides a good number of tools to aid the interpretation. However, due to the inherent complexity of earth science data, expert supervision is required at all stages of analysis from collection to dissemination. This ensures that the most appropriate methodology is adopted and the results remain consistent with the geological principles. Discussions on these practical issues often lie beyond the scope of textbooks and this is precisely where this book is placed. In this book eminent geoscientists present their experiences in analyzing and managing earth science data as well as in designing numerical models to simulate earth processes. Apart from giving a discourse of their own approach towards a particular research problem they also discuss at length the relative merits of alternative methodologies. These seven authoritative articles, richly illustrated, will be a valuable resource for research students and professionals interested in research and teaching in various branches of earth science like, tectonics, GPS geodesy, sedimentology, geographical information science, and evolutionary biology."

        This Side That Side

Restorying Partition with Graphic Narratives from Pakistan, India, Bangladesh

        by Vishwajyoti Ghosh

The most decisive formative moment in South Asian history, Partition has remained a site of constant engagement, investigation and memory-making for over three generations. Over the years, Partition discourse has been shaped by prevalent politics, the use of faith for political reasons, a nod to nostalgia, a cocktail of facts and rumours laced with speculation, and the scholarly exchange of memories.Marking a watershed, generational moments of chance in this discourse, This Side, That Side brings together graphic narratives on this epochal moment by comic artist, writers, illustrators, filmmakers, theatre activists and storytellers from across South Asia. This anthology explores a dominant theme in contemporary South Asia- an enduring curiosity about the ‘other side’. Poignant, contemplative, and often even playful, these narratives are creative explorations by those who may not have witnessed Partition, but who continue, till date, to negotiate its legacy. Many of the stories in This Side, That Side grew out of conversations---in several cases, across borders---between graphic artists and storytellers. This anthology itself is a result of a unique collaborative process between the publisher YODA PRESS, in proposing the idea and nurturing its result; GOETHE INSTITUTE/ MAX MUELLER BHAWAN, DELHI in providing processual and conceptual partnership to the project; and VISHWAJYOTI GHOSH, in mining, selecting and structuring the stories within the framework of a graphic narrative, mentoring the contributors, and designing the book.

        Engineering Vision Technology

        Revolution and Optimism

        by Pulendu Ghosh

We live in the world where nothing is difficult, if there is market. There is therefore the dilemma of want and need. Technology wants, what life wants. Using technologies, it seems, it is possible to do anything and produce anything. The centre of gravity of engineering profession is shifting. The world wants confident engineers who can foresee and manage the unknown and unexpected problems. Engineers are expected to understand global issues, and the nuances of working in a culturally diverse space. They are expected to appreciate, more than before, the human dimensions of emerging technologies. There are many questions, such as - Do I take pride in designing a thing and manufacturing it, as I take pride in packaging it? Are we cultivating the right kind of engineering mindset? What a general engineering toolkit must contain? Are there enough challenging jobs in the manufacturing industry to attract good engineers? Is it right to allow the creation of future elites who have augmented themselves with artificial intelligence and genetic engineering, without inventing a way to manage their superhuman abilities? Can there be better engineering than life itself? Should we be optimistic about the future of technology? Are we working harder than we are required to work? Can technology improve work-life balance? Is the society ready to accept the exponential development challenges? These, and many such issues are the concerns of science, engineering, technology and society. This book is an attempt to deliberate upon these issues for the welfare of humankind.

        Victory Colony, 1950

        by Bhaswati Ghosh

When she lands in Calcutta’s Sealdah railway station on a humid day in 1949, Amala Manna has managed to flee from the communal violence in her village, but not from all her trials. Within moments of crossing over to India as a refugee from East Pakistan, she loses Kartik, her younger brother. Thanks to a group of young volunteers, Amala finds her way to a refugee camp in Gariahata. Manas Dutta is the leader of the volunteer group. Despite the sordid camp life, Amala finds sustenance in her quest to find Kartik and the new familial bonds the camp allows her to forge with complete strangers. With dwindling official support, the situation in the camp deteriorates, and the refugees take things into their own hands. They establish Bijoy Nagar, literally meaning Victory Colony, by occupying a zamindar’s vacant plot of land. This dramatic event is a harbinger of radical shifts in Amala’s personal life. Victory Colony, 1950 is the story of the resilience of refugees from East Pakistan, who found themselves largely unwanted on either side of the border following the partition of India in 1947. In the face of government apathy and public disdain, the refugees built their lives from the bottom up with sheer hard work and persistence, changing, in the process, the socio-cultural landscape of Calcutta, the city they claimed as home, forever.
