Die Tatsache, daß mit sprachlichen Äußerungen Handlungen vollzogen werden, verlangt eine Klärung des Zusammenhangs zwischen dem Vollzug dieser Handlungen und der Bedeutung der dazu verwendeten sprachlichen Ausdrucksmittel. Eine Theorie kommunikativen Handelns ist dazu ebenso nötig wie eine Bedeutungstheorie, die sich den empirischen Gegebenheiten der gesprochenen Sprache nicht verschließt.

        Three of the most important chronicles of eleventh-century Germany were composed in the south-western duchy of Swabia. The chronicles reveal how between 1049 and 1100 the centripetal attraction of the reform papacy became the dominant fact of intellectual life in German reformed monastic circles. In the abbey of Reichenau Herman 'the Lame' composed a chronicle of the reign of Emperor Henry III (1039-56). His pupil, Berthold of Reichenau, continued his master's work, composing a detailed account of 1076-1079 in Germany. Bernold, a clergyman of Constance, continued the work of Herman and Berthold in a text containing the fullest extant account of 1080-1100. Herman's waning enthusiasm for the monarchy and growing interest in the newly reformed papacy were intensified in Berthold's chronicle, and writing in the new context of the reformed monasteries of south-western Germany, Bernold preached total obedience to the Gregorian papacy. The Swabian chronicles are an indispensable resource to the student of the changing loyalties and conflicts of eleventh-century Germany.

        An Ecologically and Economically Important Tree on the Brink of Extinction

        Extinction of species has alarmingly increased in recent decades due to anthropogenic activities, natural calamities and climate change. The life history, ecology and evolution of such species have often not been well studied. Gymnocladus assamicus is an archaic tree endemic to the Eastern Himalayan region of Northeast India. Locally known as 'Menangmanba-shi' by the Monpa tribe of Arunachal Pradesh (India), mature G. assamicus pods contain high saponin and are used traditionally for cleansing purposes and rituals. We rediscovered the species after more than 70 years from high altitude areas in the Himalayas through extensive field explorations and employing an ecological niche modeling approach. Our study revealed a very few actively reproducing mature G. assamicus trees surviving in unique microclimatic conditions. The species is classified as 'critically endangered' (IUCN red list). The book contains detailed information about G. assamicus and discusses its current distribution, population status, ethnobotanical uses and other ecological parameters. Major intrinsic and extrinsic factors that might be responsible for population decline are described. More importantly, we reported a very rare mating system known as 'androdioecy' in which male and hermaphrodite individuals co-exist in the natural population. Overall, the book highlights the story of a critically endangered tree species with a unique biological and socio-cultural importance and will serve as a case study and referencefor other similar species both locally and globally.

        This book explores the relationship between the papacy and reform against the backdrop of social and religious change in later tenth and eleventh-century Europe. Placing this relationship in the context of the debate about 'transformation', it reverses the recent trend among historians to emphasise the reform developments in the localities at the expense of those being undertaken in Rome. It focuses on how the papacy took an increasingly active part in shaping the direction of both its own reform and that of society, whose reform became an essential part of realising its objective of a free and independent Church. It also addresses the role of the Latin Church in western Europe around the year 1000, the historiography of reform, the significance of the 'Peace of God' as a reformist movement, the development of the papacy in the eleventh century, the changing attitudes towards simony, clerical marriage and lay investiture, reformist rhetoric aimed at the clergy, and how reformist writings sought to change the behaviour and expectations of the aristocracy. Summarising current literature while presenting a cogent and nuanced argument about the complex nature and development of reform, this book will be invaluable for an undergraduate and specialist audience alike.

        The eleventh-century papal reform transformed western European Church and society and permanently altered the relations of Church and State in the west. The reform was inaugurated by Pope Leo IX (1048-54) and given a controversial change of direction by Pope Gregory VII (1073-85). This book contains the earliest biographies of both popes, presented here for the first time in English translation with detailed commentaries. The biographers of Leo IX were inspired by his universally acknowledged sanctity, whereas the biographers of Gregory VII wrote to defend his reputation against the hostility generated by his reforming methods and his conflict with King Henry IV. Also included is a translation of Book to a Friend, written by Bishop Bonizo of Sutri soon after the death of Gregory VII, as well as an extract from the violently anti-Gregorian polemic of Bishop Benzo of Alba (1085) and the short biography of Leo IX composed in the papal curia in the 1090s by Bishop Bruno of Segni. These fascinating narrative sources bear witness to the startling impact of the papal reform and of the 'Investiture Contest', the conflict of empire and papacy that was one of its consequences. An essential collection of translated texts for students of medieval history.

Während des NS-Regimes werden die jüdischen Protagonisten von Berlin zuerst in das Ghetto von Lodz und dann nach Auschwitz deportiert. Wir erfahren von der Zeit in Lodz und Auschwitz und wie sie nach Kriegsende in ihre Heimatstadt zurückkehren, um das jüdische Gemeindezentrum wieder aufzubauen. Im geteilten und zerstörten Nachkriegsberlin herrscht große Not. Ästhetik, Kultur und Komfort existieren Seite an Seite mit dem Elend der Stadt, mit den Betrunkenen, Bettlern, Kriegerwitwen und Händlern, die die Hinterlassenschaften der Überlebenden zu Geld machen. Die Protagonisten treffen sich Mitte der 80ger Jahre beim Pessach Seder (dem traditionellen jüdischen Mahl am Vorabend des Pessachfestes, mit dem die Befreiung von der Sklaverei und der Auszug der Juden aus Ägypten gefeiert wird) und diskutieren das Schicksal der überlebenden Juden. Der Gastgeber erinnert sich an das Fest 1941, das er im Ghetto von Lodz feiern mußte. Was hat die Überlebenden letztlich dazu bewegt,  nach Berlin zurückzukehren und dort ein neues Leben aufzubauen ? Die Frage wird immer wieder gestellt, gibt es eine Antwort ? Die mannigfaltigen Veränderungen der Stadt von einer Weltstadt vor dem Krieg zu einer geteilten Insel zwischen Ost und West bis in das Berlin kurz vor der Wende werden aus der persönlichen Perspektive der Protagonisten lebendig. Meir Sussman, geb. in Jerusalem studierte Film (New York) und Theologie (Berlin). Er produzierte den erfolgreichen Film Zacharia (Deutschland 1985-86, Drehbuch und Regie: Irene Dische). Eine seiner Kurzgeschichten, Die Bau - Maus, wurde in der Zeitschrift  Der Alltag (Zürich, 1989) unter dem Pseudonym Max Katzenfuß veröffentlicht. Der Autor hat neben mehreren preisgekrönten Theaterstücken auch zwei Kinderbücher veröffentlicht: Der tolle Koch (Jerusalem, 1997) sowie Benjamin der Gute und Benjamin der Böse (Jerusalem, 1999).         Nematodes, which are small multi cellular organisms have been used as biological models since the 1960's. The nematode worm Caenorhabditis elegans is a free-living nematode, about 1mm in length, that lives in temperate soil environments. It is made up of about 1000 cells, and has a short life cycle of only 2 weeks. It was the first multicellular organism to have its whole genome sequenced.         Liverpool's inconvenient imperial past

        From the late eighteenth century to the early twentieth century, Liverpool was frequently referred to as the 'second city of the empire'. Yet, the role of Liverpool within the British imperial system and the impact on the city of its colonial connections remain underplayed in recent writing on both Liverpool and the empire. However, 'inconvenient' this may prove, this specially-commissioned collection of essays demonstrates that the imperial dimension deserves more prevalence in both academic and popular representations of Liverpool's past. Indeed, if Liverpool does represent the 'World in One City' - the slogan for Liverpool's status as European Capital of Culture in 2008 - it could be argued that this is largely down to Merseyside's long-term interactions with the colonial world, and the legacies of that imperial history.
