        Jean-Jacques Beineix

        by Philip Powrie

        This volume is the first to examine, in either French or English, the films of Jean-Jacques Beineix, often seen as the best example of the 1980s cinéma du look, with cult films, such as Diva and Betty Blue (37º 2 le matin) .. After an introduction which places Beineix in the context of the 1980s and the arguments centering on a postmodern cinema, the volume devotes a chapter to each of Beineix's feature films, including the film which marked his return to feature film making after a break of a decade, Mortel Transfert (2001). Prefaced by an excellent foreword by the director himself, which includes a broad condemnation of French critics. Includes many illustrations direct from the director's own collection, complementing the interviews Powrie made with him and his collaborators.

        David and Bathsheba

        George Peele

        by Mathew R. Martin

        David and Bathsheba presents a modernised edition of George Peele's explosive biblical drama about the tangled lives, deadly liaisons, and twisted histories of Ancient Israel's royal family. Martin's critical edition is the first modern single-volume edition of the play since 1912 and opens up this unduly neglected gem of English Renaissance drama to student and scholar alike. The introduction examines such topics as the play's treatment of its biblical and poetic sources, its engagement with Elizabethan politics, and its forceful representations of religious fanaticism, genocide, and sexual violence. Its commentary notes clarify the text's meaning and staging, guide the reader through the play's dramatisation of the turbulent Davidic period of Ancient Israel's history, and place the play in its broader cultural and artistic milieu. Martin's edition aims to encourage new contemporary critical study of Peele's powerful and disturbing drama.

        Jacques Cousteau, Updated Edition

        by Johanna Knowles

        Jacques Cousteau was an underwater explorer, inventor, filmmaker, author, and world-renowned environmentalist. He was the first to photograph and, later, film underwater life. He, his family, and his crew traveled the world on his famous ship, Calypso, to film never-before-seen sea creatures, shipwrecks, and other wonders. His photos and films inspired generations of marine biologists, undersea diving enthusiasts, and environmentalists. Jacques Cousteau, Updated Edition delves into the life and work of this underwater navigator whose name became synonymous with the ocean, and the ways he introduced the world to the mysteries of the deep.

        Five Directors

        Auteurism from Assayas to Ozon

        by Kate Ince

        Auteurism - the idea that a director of a film is its source of meaning and should retain creative control over the finished product - has been one of film studies' most important paradigms ever since the French New Wave of the late 1950s and early 1960s, and the adoption of the term auteur by Andrew Sarris. Through the popular, controversial and critically acclaimed films of Olivier Assayas, Jacques Audiard, the Dardenne borthers, Michael Haneke and Francois Ozon, this book looks into how the meaning of 'auteur' has changed over this half-century, and assesses the current state of Francophone auteur cinema. It combines French philosophical and sociological approaches with methodologies from the Anglo-American fields of gender studies, queer theory and postmodernism. This volume will be of interest to researchers and students of film studies, European cinema and French and Francophone studies, as well as to film enthusiasts.

        Die vorletzte Station / Die Chronik Dingy

        Ein Bericht

        by Ludwig Hohl, Magnus Wieland

        Der nachgelassene Bericht Die vorletzte Station, eine Chronik von Ludwig Hohls Aufenthalt im Bergdörfchen Dingy, schildert die reale Begegnung mit Georges Mergault, einer heruntergekommenen ehemaligen Montparnasse-Bekanntschaft. In der haltlosen und kranken Künstler-Existenz Mergaults sieht sich der Erzähler mit einem monströsen Gegenbild seiner Vorstellung vom richtigen Leben konfrontiert und zugleich mit eigenen Abgründen. In einzelnen Episoden, schwankend zwischen Abscheu und unterschwelliger Faszination, entsteht das Porträt einer Figur radikaler Unangepasstheit vor der Kulisse eines skurrilen Dorfalltags.Eine Sozialstudie von zuweilen grotesker Komik.

        Jacques Demy

        by Darren Waldron, Diana Holmes, Robert Ingram

        Saccharine for some, poignant for others, Jacques Demy's 'enchanted' world is familiar to generations of French audiences accustomed to watching Christmas repeats of his fairytale Peau d'âne (1970) or seeing Catherine Deneuve and Françoise Dorléac prance and pirouette in Les Demoiselles de Rochefort (1966). Demy achieved international recognition with Les Parapluies de Cherbourg (1963), which was awarded the Palme d'Or at Cannes. However, beneath the apparently sugary coating of his films lie more philosophical reflections on some of the most pressing issues that preoccupy Western societies, including affect, subjectivity, self/other relations and free will. This wide-ranging book addresses many of the key aspects of Demy's cinema, including his associations with the New Wave, his unique approach to musicals, his adaptations of fairytales, his representations of gender and sexuality and his legacy as an iconic director for generations of audiences and filmmakers. ;

        Der ununterbrochene Dialog

        by Jacques Derrida, Hans-Georg Gadamer, Martin Gessmann, Martin Gessmann

        Jacques Derrida und Hans-Georg Gadamer lernten sich in den frühen 80er Jahren kennen, und seit dieser Zeit entspann sich eine kontroverse Auseinandersetzung über die Hermeneutik, die Kunst der Interpretation, insbesondere über die Endlichkeit unseres Verstehens. Als Gadamer starb, hielt Derrida im Februar 2003 die Festrede zur Gedenkfeier der Universität Heidelberg. Mit einer eindringlichen Celan-Lektüre führt Derrida vor, wie das Gespräch mit Gadamer über seine letzte Unterbrechung hinaus am Ende zu einem ›ununterbrochenen Dialog‹ werden könnte. Dem Band beigefügt sind Kommentare Gadamers zu Celans Gedichtfolge Atemkristall sowie Materialien aus der Zeit der ersten Begegnung. In Derridas Reflexion über den Abschied und das Abschiednehmen kommt es hier zu einer letzten, vielleicht entscheidenden Annäherung.

        Jacques Rivette

        by Douglas Morrey, Diana Holmes, Alison Smith, Robert Ingram

        Jacques Rivette is perhaps the best-kept secret of French cinema. A founding figure in the New Wave, and at the centre of the Cahiers du cinéma team, he developed into one of the most unusual and adventurous French directors of the last sixty years, yet his work remains little-known in comparison with his contemporaries, and this study is the first in English to look at the full span of his career. Starting with his decisively influential film criticism of the 1950s, it moves from the New Wave through the complex, experimental films of the 1970s to the challenging, playful dramas which ensured his visibility during the following two decades, and ends in the present, including Rivette's most recent films, Histoire de Marie et Julien (2003) and Ne touchez pas la hache (2007). The book takes a thematic approach, offering detailed discussion of key elements of Rivette's film world, including games, conspiracy and jealousy, as well as a study of what Rivette's cinema adds to our understanding of key theoretical concepts in Film Studies such as narrative, space and adaptation. There are many close analyses of sequences from Rivette's films including Paris nous appartient (1961), Céline et Julie vont en bateau (1974) and La Belle Noiseuse (1991). ;

        Psychoanalysis and the family in twentieth-century France

        Françoise Dolto and her legacy

        by Richard Bates, David Hopkin, Maire Cross, Jennifer Sessions

        In the last quarter of the twentieth century, if French people had a parenting problem or dilemma there was one person they consulted above all: Françoise Dolto (1908-88). But who was Dolto? How did she achieve a position of such influence? What ideas did she communicate to the French public? This book connects the story of Dolto's rise to two broader histories: the dramatic growth of psychoanalysis in postwar France and the long-running debate over the family and the proper role of women in society. It shows that Dolto's continued reputation in France as a liberal and enlightened educational thinker is at best only partially deserved and that conservative and anti-feminist ideas often underpinned her prominent public interventions. While Dolto retains the status of a national treasure, her career has had far-reaching and sometimes harmful repercussions for French society, particularly in the treatment of autism.

        Grammatologie

        by Jacques Derrida, Hans-Jörg Rheinberger, Hanns Zischler

        Unter dem Titel Grammatologie erarbeitet Jacques Derrida eine Theorie der Schrift, des Zeichens, des Bezeichnens, die eine Reihe tradierter Vorstellungen und Begriffe in Frage stellt, u.a.: Vernunft, Ursprung, Subjekt, Geschichte (die immer nur eine Geschichte der »Vernunft« gewesen sei). Im ersten Teil des Buches - »Die Schrift vor dem Buchstaben« - entwirft Derrida eine theoretische Grundlage, die er im zweiten Teil - »Natur, Kultur, Schrift« - an einem Schlüsseltext des europäischen Logozentrismus überprüft, an Rousseaus Essai sur l'origine des langues, dessen (von Lévi-Strauss her unternommene) Lektüre zu einer Lektüre der Epoche Rousseaus wird.Derrida verfolgt von Plato über Rousseau, Hegel, Husserl, Saussure bis zu Lévi-Strauss das Funktionieren und die Problematik (die historischen Kosten) der logozentrischen Begrifflichkeit des abendländischen Denkens.
