Friedrich Schiller (1759-1805) war Dichter und Philosoph, Historiker, Arzt und Hochschulprofessor. Vor allem aber gilt er als einer der bedeutendsten deutschen Dramatiker. Werke wie Kabale und Liebe, Wilhelm Tell oder Die Räuber stehen auch international regelmäßig auf den Spielplänen der Theater. Zudem gilt er als wichtigster deutschsprachiger Balladendichter (u. a. Die Bürgschaft, Der Taucher). Charakteristisch für Schillers Werke ist die Macht der Sprache, die für Emotion und Freiheitsdrang zu einer Zeit absolutistischer Herrschaft steht. Prägend für das späte Werk Schillers wurde der Gedankenaustausch mit Geistesgrößen wie Goethe, Herder und Lessing während seiner letzten sechs Lebensjahre im thüringischen Weimar.
