Michel Foucault und seine Mitarbeiter sind im Zusammenhang von Untersuchungen zur Geschichte der Beziehungen zwischen Psychiatrie und Strafjustiz auf den Fall Rivière gestoßen, über den 1836 eine ungewöhnlich umfangreiche Dokumentation publiziert worden war, u. a. ein Memoire Pierre Rivières über die Beweggründe zu seiner Tat: der Ermordung seiner Mutter, seiner Schwester und seines Bruders. Warum hat sich über diese Dokumentation – und insbesondere über das Memoire Pierre Rivières –, nachdem sie einmal das lebhafte Interesse der Ärzte erregt hatte, alsbald wieder absolutes Schweigen gebreitet? Die Autoren der »Anmerkungen« zu den im ersten Teil des vorliegenden Bandes abgedruckten Dokumenten analysieren einige auf den ersten Blick verdeckte Funktionen der vielfach sich überlagernden, sich kreuzenden und gegeneinander gerichteten Diskurse, die scheinbar alle von derselben Sache sprechen – einem Fall von Verwandtenmord –, gleichzeitig aber Gefechte sind. Lorsque la vieille synagogue d'Alep fut brûlée, Michel sauva les manuscrits de « Aram Tsova » et tenta de les préserver des flammes. Il sauva une partie de ce manuscrit sacré et inestimable, qu'il déposa dans un coffre-fort à Nice, en France. Bien que ce trésor soit mis à l'abri, Michel interprète les drames de sa famille comme une punition divine.Tout au long du roman, le lecteur suit la trace de Michel au cours de ses voyages à travers le monde, préoccupé par ses problèmes familiaux et ses difficultés professionnelles, accablé par une santé fragile et une conscience lourde. La vie de son fils Albert, devenu membre influant des implantations collectives en Israël, lui est tout à fait étrangère. Né en Syrie en 1929, Amnon Shamosh a immigré à Tel-Aviv dans son enfance et devint plus tard l'un des membres fondateurs du kibboutz Maayan Baruch, où il réside encore aujourd’hui. Diplômé de l'Université Hébraïque de Jérusalem, il écrit en vers et en prose pour les enfants et les adultes ; son travail a été traduit en anglais, en espagnol et en français. Amnon Shamosh reçut le prix Agnon, ainsi nommé ne l’honneur du célèbre lauréat israélien du prix Nobel de littérature, le prix de créativité du Premier Ministre, le prix de littérature du Président d'Israël, il remporta aussi de nombreux autres prix littéraires.

Vom Januar 1971 bis zu seinem Tod im Juni 1984 hatte Michel Foucault einen Lehrstuhl am College de France in Paris inne, und zwar für die Geschichte der Denksysteme. Zu seinen Pflichten gehörte es, öffentliche, für jedermann zugängliche Vorträge zu halten. In diesen Vorträgen wurden jeweils die neuesten Forschungsergebnisse präsentiert. Von Michel Foucaults Vorlesungen sind die Manuskripte und Tonbandmitschnitte erhalten. Auf ihrer Grundlage wurde der vorliegende Band erarbeitet. Diese Tatsache erklärt, daß mit den hier vorgelegten Vorlesungen aus den Jahren 1975/76 ein neuer Michel Foucault zu entdecken ist. Neu in zweierlei Hinsicht. Zum einen kann man verfolgen, wie er beim Reden seine Gedanken entwickelt. Damit bietet sich ein leichter Zugang zu den Grundvorstellungen dieses Philosophen. Ein neuer Foucault ist auch in zweiter Hinsicht zu entdecken, weil in seinen Vorlesungen zugleich ein Stück Bildung, sein persönliches Engagement und ein direkter Bezug zur Gegenwart sichtbar werden. In Verteidigung der Gesellschaft geht Michel Foucault der Frage nach, inwieweit Machtverhältnisse nach dem Modell des Krieges analysiert werden können. Seine im doppelten Wortsinn polemischen Ausführungen lassen sich in der Frage zusammenfassen, ob man den Aphorismus von Clausewitz nicht auf den Kopf stellen und behaupten müsse, daß die Politik die Fortsetzung des Krieges mit anderen Mitteln sei.

Michel Ezra Safra & Sons is a family saga by a well-known Israeli writer, Amnon Shamosh. The story is semibiographical and takes place partly in Aleppo, Syria, the birthplace of the author. The book describes the life, struggles, and dispersion of a well-to-do Syrian Jewish family during the course of three generations, beginning in the mid-1930’s. The story of the Ezra Safra family is the tale of a Middle Eastern Jewish society and its basic traditional values, which are constantly challenged by other norms, both circumstantial and universal. Shaken by local and global upheavals, the family, headed by Michel and his pretty wife Linda, is driven from their hometown of Aleppo during riots in the aftermath of the United Nations resolution in late 1947 on the establishment of a Jewish state in Palestine. Michel, a practical figure, continues to rule his worldwide business empire. His grip on his children seems to loosen, however, though he still enjoys their respect and love. Rachmo, the eldest son and heir apparent, runs the Paris branch of the family business, but his conduct as a family man does not live up to his parents’ standards. Albert, his younger brother, abhors business and shuns the course he is expected to take. He finds an outlet in Zionist underground activity, including “smuggling” Jews into Palestine. Five other Safra sons and daughters emigrate to Europe, America, and Israel. What concerns Michel most, disturbing and haunting him, is not the state of his financial empire, but a grave “sin” that he has committed. When the old synagogue of Aleppo was set on fire, Michel rescued the “Aram Zova” Torah scroll and managed to keep it from burning. He removed a piece from this priceless, sacred scroll and secreted it in a safe in Nice, France. Although this treasure is protected, Michel construes the tragedies that befall the family as divine punishment. Throughout the novel, the reader follows Michel on his worldwide travels, settling family and business affairs, burdened by poor health and by his conscience. The life of his son Albert, now an influential member of a collective settlement in Israel, is completely alien to him. The saga of the Ezra Safra family draws to a finale when Michel dies heartbroken a few days after his grandson is killed during the 1967 Six-Day War. Later, Rachmo, who was made party to his father’s secret, dies of a heart attack upon learning that the scroll in Nice has been stolen. Linda agrees to join her children in Israel, but refuses to live with them. She chooses to live a solitary life, surrounded by photos and memories of the past. Michel Ezra Safra and Sons was made into a highly successful mini-series for the Israeli television. French and Spanish translations of the entire novel are available! 348 pages, 14.5X21 cm
