        Encyclopedia of Farm Animal Nutrition

by N J Benevenga, Santosh P Lall, Kelvin J McCracken, Hussain M Omed, Roger F E Axford. Edited by Malcolm F Fuller.

The Encyclopedia of Farm Animal Nutrition deals with the whole of farm animal nutrition, embracing a wide range of disciplines, including physiology, biochemistry, veterinary medicine and feed technology. The encyclopedia contains approximately 2000 entries from 90 contributors. These entries range from short definitions to more discursive articles, all entries are fully cross-referenced to aid further research. The encyclopedia covers every type of farm animal found in both developing and developed countries, including cattle, sheep, pigs, chickens, goats, horses, fish, deer, buffaloes, rabbits and camelids, as well as ducks, turkeys, ostriches and other birds.Sample Entries: Acylglycerol, A form of lipid made up of one glycerol molecule combined with three individual (not necessarily identical) fatty acid molecules attached to the glycerol by ester bonds. Acylglycerols form part of the neutral lipid fraction.Free fatty acids (FFAs), Also called non-esterified fatty acids (NEFAs), fatty acids that are not esterified to glycerol or another alcohol such as choline or cholesterol. In blood plasma or serum, FFAs are really not free but bound to plasma albumin.Locust bean, Properly the fruit of the African locust bean tree (Parkia filicoidea) but the name is frequently applied to the fruit of the carob tree (Ceratonia siliqua). The latter originated in the eastern Mediterranean region and is also found in the subtropics. The fruits are thick, fleshy (more so in the carob) pods each containing about a dozen seeds. The seeds are tough and must be crushed before feeding. The resulting meal has a high sugar and energy content and is very palatable but is low in protein (42-54 g kg-1).Oyster Shell, Oyster shells are almost pure calcium carbonate (95-99%) and are good sources of calcium for all classes of animals. Clam shells, conch shells, coral and coral sand can all be used for feeding. Shells that have been ground to coarse grit tend to be more palatable to laying hens and help grain digestion in the gizzard, as well as producing strong eggshells. For laying hens the shells should be ground to 0.5-2.0 mm and mixed 2:1 with finely ground limestone.Pacu, A commercially important freshwater fish native to the rivers of Brazil. This large migratory fish reaches 60 cm in length and is a scavenger that eats vegetation, mostly of fruit that falls into the water as well as an occasional small fish or insect. Pacu is one of the first native fish species to be successfully cultured in Brazil. A market size of 1-2 kg can be attained in 18-20 month at water temperatures of 22-280 C.

        El nombre del barco

by María José Ferrada, Ana Penyas

On May of 1937, during the Spanish Civil War, 456 sons and daughters of republican fighters took the transatlantic boat Mexique, that set sail in Bordeau to arrive in Mexico. Previsions were that they would stay there three or four months, but the Republican defeat and the beginning of the Second World War changed that brief exile into a definitive one.  This books tells the story not only of those children, but also about the ship, being aware that we do not know how many boats try to cross our oceans every day, moving human beings that have full rights to a proper way of living and not to stand over a land that tears apart below their feet.

        Animal

        Poemas breves salvajes

by María José Ferrada, Ana Palmero

"Hidden in his horn he guards the secret of the jungle”. This might be as well the beginning of a novel, but it's an inspired riddle about wild animals. The illustrations in high varnish of this edition highlight the different skin textures of each animal and invites the reader to discover a new way of reading in a tactile and playful way.

El amigo del novio ("The Friend of the Bridegroom")

Juan el Bautista: historia y teología ("John the Baptist: History")

        by Roberto Martínez Rivera

Despite the frequency with which many people listen to the mention of John the Baptist in liturgies and other celebrations, his figure remains largely unknown or proves enigmatic. Nevertheless, his importance in the New Testament is unquestionable. Jesus dedicates to him the highest praise anyone has ever been given: “Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist…” (Matthew 11:11); and the historian Flavius Josephus dedicates more space in the Baptist than in Jesus himself. But who really was John? Were he and Jesus cousins, as it is popularly said, or just relatives, as the Gospel of Luke 1:36) clearly states? Why did Jesus allow himself to be baptised by John with “a baptism for the forgiveness of sins” (Mark 1:4) if he was free from sin?

        Under the Fig Tree

        by María Bautista

Clara returns from Berlin after ten years with a suitcase filled with pain and guilt. It’s almost impossible for her to feel like she is back home: her mother is not there anymore and her friends are trying to survive the economic crisis and adult life. Without prospects and without a job, she tries to face her past and to recover the hope of a future by moving to a small village in Salamanca to take care of Inés, her 93 years old grandmother. In a house full of the old woman ghosts, always ill-tempered and elusive, Clara will discover a story that, like her own, is marked by the deaths of others and by secrets that, sooner or later, will come out to light. With a Spanish depopulated rural village as a background, the novel tells the encounter between two generations of women and how they overcome their differences through sorority and solidarity.

        About Ausencia

        by María Luisa Mendoza

It’s likely that Mexican literature hasn’t yet produced another character similar to Ausencia Bautista Lumbres, who went from an impoverished orphan to a rich girl due to the fact that her father bought a prosperous mine before dying. Being a free and independent woman, Ausencia devotes her life to enjoy several lovers and pleasures with the complicity of the faithful Enedina. The protagonist’s conflict comes from a deeper place, from the philosophical questioning of femininity and existence. The author breaks all limits by the use of a complicated language and narrative techniques, that also provoke a unique vertigo sensation. The final result is complex and funny at the same time.

      • THE SECRET LANGUAGE OF STONES

by VICTORIA PÉREZ ESCRIVÁ / ESTER GARCÍA

Everything has a good side and a bad side. Life doesn’t always let us see both. Sometimes from bad things we get good things. But it also happens the other way around, from good things we get bad things. Life can be as cryptic as a stone. Sometimes tripping over one can save your life. That is the Secret Language of Stones.

        Abrid mentes, tocad corazones

        by Jorge A. Sierra

        Attrition

        by Matthew O'Neil

A man with a talent for time travel mysteriously holds a woman captive. Deborah Ester wakes to a shrill cackle. Her last memory vague, she finds herself bound to a metal pole in a small prison cell. Her captor is a maniac. Though unpredictable, he exhibits an unusual talent. One that brings him, and Deborah, to pivotal and twisted moments in history. Among others, Deborah is brought to the Jurassic period, to London during the time of Jack the Ripper, and, more curiously, to the Crucifixion of Jesus, the offering of Isaac by Abraham, and the Massacre of the Innocent. Deborah learns the necessary role she plays in each of these events, and how her captor has influenced history himself. Deborah would never choose this of her own free will, but does she actually have free will if it means destroying the history that is responsible for her own existence? A sequel to Attrition is forthcoming.
