Durch sie beginnt Ludwig die kritischen Autoren Böll, Andersch und Koeppen und Bücher über Widerstand und die Wiederbewaffnung der Bundesrepublik zu lesen. Paul Kohl schildert eindrucksvoll die verstörende Kontinuität vom NS-Staat zur jungen Republik im Zeichen des Aufschwungs. Brillant recherchiert, lakonisch, gesellschaftskritisch.

24 July 2010 – Loveparade in Duisburg. Full of anticipation, Katty and her clique set off for the biggest techno party in the world. They have no idea that this day will end in a tragedy. While the bass beats resound from the grounds, a fight for survival begins. In May 2020, one of the most elaborate court cases of the post-war history of Germany ended prematurely without a verdict. And so the trial of the Duisburg Love Parade with 21 dead and more than 650 injured was dropped – a horrible defeat for those affected and the victims' relatives. The verdict came two and a half months before the statute of limitation for negligent homicide, which would have applied on 27 July 2020, ten years after the last victim of the disaster died in hospital. Jessika Westen, reporter, presenter and author, was then a reporter of the Duisburg drama. She was then honoured for her outstanding performance as a live reporter. Now, ten years later and in anticipation of the statute of limitations, her book, in which she deals with the actual events, is being published. In novel form, told from three different perspectives, Westen traces the course of the tragedy. With great emotional depth and density, she describes how the situation comes to a head, culminating in a deadly crush and ends in a terrible disaster. The book was written after many conversations with relatives, victims, eyewitnesses and first aid workers and after reviewing legal documents. It pulls the reader along, it touches, shakes up and leaves nobody emotionless. The scenario is described in such a realistic manner that the drama of the event is tangible at first hand. Westen has written an ambitious book that is all the more important with the discontinuation of the trial and helps to ensure that the story is not forgotten by the public. The scope of the novel seems all the greater in view of the premature termination.

A page-turner with an idyllic alpine panorama, which is terrifically entertaining and also makes you think about worldwide challenges during these times of pandemics and environmental destruction.

How many painful truths does it take to establish state unity, to find personal identity? The story seems superficially like a classic crime novel with a traditional investigation: a cold case from the transitional days comes to the surface and the lives of two people are shaken by it. But there is a deeper meaning here. Between the lines, readers can also witness the very personal account of an author and contemporary „surviver“, who spent his childhood and youth in the East, not far from the death strip. Years later, in the post-reunification period, he tried to create order in the Franconian administration where order could not be found. The many encounters and fates that did not abandon him to this day have been impressively incorporated into his crime novel that could not be more current and exciting.

Kehrer skilfully and subtly combines uncomfortable socially critical topics with lots of humour, verbal exchanges and and typical subtle wit, succeeding in a balancing act that few authors can manage. At the same time, he weaves the right dose of Münster local colour into a suspenseful plot in a charming and casual manner, thus creating a lovable memorial to his old homeland. Following the brash private detective with the good nose in a case that brings him little money but a lot of trouble is pure pleasure. As usual, profound reflections on life and the world alternate with crisp, absurd situational comedy and many surprising twists, which makes reading a real pleasure. Entertainment with a very high addiction factor – it doesn't get any better than this!

Diese ganz eigene Fiktion erreicht die Autorin u. a. mit den Elementen eines comichaften Film-Noir-Stils und ihrem epischen Sprachsound. Inhaltlich arbeitet Kastel im Kosmos von gnadenloser Gewalt und hilflosen Verzweiflung ganz bewusst mit Madonnas unbändiger Sehnsucht nach Heimat, Licht und Erlösung. Als Schriftstellerin, die mit dem Background der ehemaligen Buchhändlerin die Branche kennt wie nur wenige andere, weiß sie an genau diesen neuralgischen, literarischen Verfahrensweisen ihre künstlerische Eigenständigkeit zu entzünden und zu entwickeln.

Wie Dommel aus der Psychologie einer erstarrten, doch beidseitig um einen Neuanfang bemühten Vater-Tochter-Beziehung die Schattenseiten einer zutiefst verunsicherten globalisierten Welt zeigt, ist einzigartig. Zudem verankert er unaufdringlich starkes Lokalkolorit in seinem Plot, in dem sich die Einsamkeit und Kälte des Nordens sowohl in der Stimmung des Romans als auch in der Gemütsverfassung seiner Figuren widerspiegelt.
