        This report reviews the energy and protein requirement systems for dairy cows currently used in Britain and presents a new approach, along with the outline of a model for its implementation. Current systems give little consideration to the responses of the animal to changes in the nutrient supply, or to interactions between dietary constituents in their effects on digestion and metabolism. Neither do they predict any effect on the partition of nutrient use between milk and body, or changes in the yields of milk fat, protein and lactose, which determine the commercial value of the milk. Therefore the systems, although not inaccurate, lack relevance to the current needs of UK milk producers. Models which embody concepts of nutrient supply and utilization are reviewed and their development as viable alternatives is considered. It is concluded that a new diet formulation system for dairy cows should aim to predict voluntary feed intake, the partition of nutrient use between milk production and tissue deposition, and the short and long-term of effects of nutrition on fat, protein and lactose yields. The physical and biological characteristics of the cow must also be recognized and incorporated into any model for response prediction. The report is also published in Nutrition Abstracts and Reviews - Series B: Livestock Feeds and Feeding. It is an authoritative review for advanced students, research workers and advisors in animal nutrition and in dairy science and technology.

Searle mit 'Intentionalität' eine Untersuchung zu einem Kernstück der Philosophie des Geistes vorgelegt, die in einem engen thematischen Zusammenhang mit den früheren Arbeiten steht. Intentionalität ist nach Searles Auffassung die Basis sprachlicher Bedeutung. In seiner Theorie der Intentionalität geht es um die begrifflichen Eigenschaften intentionaler Zustände (auf die Frage nach ihrem ontologischen Status geht er ausführlicher ein in 'Geist, Hirn und Wissenschaft', stw 591). Zwei Aspekte stehen dabei im Vordergrund der Untersuchung: die Logik der Repräsentation und der Kausalität intentionaler Zustände. Doch Searle entwickelt in dieser Arbeit nicht nur eine Theorie der Intentionalität und des Zusammenhangs zwischen sprachlichem und geistigem Inhalt. In einem vornehmlich kritischen Teil setzt er sich ausführlich mit konkurrierenden Auffassungen aus dem Bereich der analytischen Philosophie auseinander, insbesondere mit derzeit sehr einflußreichen 'nicht-deskriptivistischen' Theorien des Bezugs, wie sie von S. Kripke, H. Putnam, K. Donnellan, T. Burge und D. Kaplan vertreten und angeregt wurden.

        Theodor W. Adorno wurde am 11. September 1903 in Frankfurt am Main geboren und starb am 06. August 1969 während eines Ferienaufenthalts in Visp/Wallis an den Folgen eines Herzinfarkts. Von 1921 bis 1923 studierte er in Frankfurt Philosophie, Soziologie, Psychologie und Musikwissenschaft und promovierte 1924 über Die Transzendenz des Dinglichen und Noematischen in Husserls Phänomenologie. Bereits während seiner Schulzeit schloss er Freundschaft mit Siegfried Kracauer und während seines Studiums mit Max Horkheimer und Walter Benjamin. Mit ihnen zählt Adorno zu den wichtigsten Vertretern der »Frankfurter Schule«, die aus dem Institut für Sozialforschung an der Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität in Frankfurt hervorging. Sämtliche Werke Adornos sind im Suhrkamp Verlag erschienen. Rolf Tiedemann wurde 1932 in Hamburg geboren. Im Zuge seines Studiums der Philosophie, Germanistik und Soziologie in Hamburg, Göttingen, Berlin und schlussendlich in Frankfurt am Main, war Tiedemann ab 1959 als wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter und später als persönlicher Assistent bei Theodor W. Adorno beschäftigt. 1964 promovierte er mit der ersten Dissertation über Walter Benjamin bei Adorno und Max Horkheimer. Gemeinsam mit Hermann Schweppenhäuser übernahm er 1970 die Herausgeberschaft der Gesamtausgaben von Adorno und Walter Benjamin. Von 1985 bis 2002 war er Direktor des Theodor W. Adorno Archivs in Frankfurt, von wo aus er u.a. die Ausgaben der Nachgelassenen Schriften Adornos initiierte. Vielfach rezipiert und in zahlreiche Sprachen übersetzt sind die von Tiedemann edierten Bände des Passagenwerks von Benjamin und der Ästhetischen Theorie sowie des Beethoven von Adorno. Rolf Tiedemann verstarb am 29. Juli 2018.

        Lupins have until recently remained wild or semi-domesticated species of minor interest to agriculture, although their value as a rotation crop was noted 2,000 years ago. However, with the advent of the science of genetics in the early twentieth century, full domestication of Lupinus species for use as crops was begun, by the combination of favourable genes such as those for low alkaloid content, non-shattering pods and soft seeds. As a result several lupin species have become an important part of temperate farming systems as a high protein crop for both animal and human consumption.         Als Adorno seine Eltern im Juni 1939 in Havanna wiedersah, waren sie erst wenige Wochen auf Kuba. Oscar und Maria Wiesengrund hatten sich in letzter Minute aus Nazideutschland retten können. Von Kuba zogen sie Ende 1939 zunächst nach Florida und dann nach New York, wo sie von August 1940 an bis zum Ende ihres Lebens blieben. Erst mit Adornos Übersiedlung nach Kalifornien Ende 1941 berichten seine Briefe wieder und fast regelmäßig alle vierzehn Tage von der Arbeit und den Lebensumständen sowie den Freunden, Bekannten und Größen des damaligen Hollywood. Erzählungen von der gemeinsamen Arbeit mit Max Horkheimer, Thomas Mann und Hanns Eisler stehen neben Partyberichten, Clownereien mit Charlie Chaplin und unglücklichen Liebesaffären. Die Briefe bergen aber auch die ungestillte Sehnsucht nach Europa: So beginnt Adorno schon bei Kriegseintritt Amerikas, sich Gedanken über die Rückkehr zu machen. Die »Briefe an die Eltern« - die wohl offensten und persönlichsten, die er je geschrieben hat - eröffnen nicht nur einen Blick auf die Erfahrungen, die am Anfang der berühmten ›Minima Moralia‹ standen, sondern zeigen Adorno von einer bisher unbekannten, überaus persönlichen Seite.
