        David and Bathsheba

        George Peele

        by Mathew R. Martin

        David and Bathsheba presents a modernised edition of George Peele's explosive biblical drama about the tangled lives, deadly liaisons, and twisted histories of Ancient Israel's royal family. Martin's critical edition is the first modern single-volume edition of the play since 1912 and opens up this unduly neglected gem of English Renaissance drama to student and scholar alike. The introduction examines such topics as the play's treatment of its biblical and poetic sources, its engagement with Elizabethan politics, and its forceful representations of religious fanaticism, genocide, and sexual violence. Its commentary notes clarify the text's meaning and staging, guide the reader through the play's dramatisation of the turbulent Davidic period of Ancient Israel's history, and place the play in its broader cultural and artistic milieu. Martin's edition aims to encourage new contemporary critical study of Peele's powerful and disturbing drama.

        Intentionalität

        Eine Abhandlung zur Philosophie des Geistes

        by Harvey P. Gavagai, John R. Searle

        Practical R for Biologists

        An Introduction

        by Donald Quicke, Buntika A Butcher, Rachel Kruft Welton

        R is a freely available, open-source statistical programming environment which provides powerful statistical analysis tools and graphics outputs. R is now used by a very wide range of people; biologists (the primary audience of this book), but also all other scientists and engineers, economists, market researchers and medical professionals. R users with expertise are constantly adding new associated packages, and the range already available is immense.This text works through a set of studies that collectively represent almost all the R operations that biology students need in order to analyse their own data. The material is designed to serve students from first year undergraduates through to those beginning post graduate levels. Chapters are organized around topics such as graphing, classical statistical tests, statistical modelling, mapping, and text parsing. Examples are based on real scientific studies, and each one covers the use of more R functions than those simply necessary to get a p-value or plot.The book walks the reader through the data analysis process, starting with very simple plots, and continuing through more complex analyses and programming. It shows how to deal with issues such as error messages that can be confronting for beginners, in order to set students up for a successful scientific career using R.Collectively the authors have a vast amount of teaching experience which they apply here to make the passage into R programming as gentle and easy as possible, whilst guiding the reader to tackle quite complicated programming. Conga Line on the Amazon

        by David Myles Robinson

        David Myles Robinson was eight years old when he first got hooked on travel. Since then, he’s seen most of the world—all its continents plus, he laments, “far too many places where travel is now off-limits.”After a lifetime of visiting near and far, in heat and in cold, in comfort and in danger, Robinson has put it all together now in this unique collection of the varied travel adventures he’s found—and the lessons he’s learned from them. A Fellini-esque view of the Amazon, a Mercedes caravan to Istanbul, Jane Goodall's amazing chimps—just part of a travel trunk full of experiences guaranteed to keep you seesawing from “Boy, I'd love to do that" to “Sure glad it was him, not me.”In Conga Line on the Amazon, Robinson brings to his first travel book the same gift for intriguing narrative and sharp characterization that has won praise for his six highly successful novels. Some of his tales may be for the strong of heart, but they’re all for the reader with a yen to be entertained by one intrepid man’s adventures and misadventures exploring the strange and wonderful world we live in.

        The Troublesome Reign of John, King of England

        By George Peele

        by David Bevington, Charles Forker, Charles R. Forker, Richard Dutton, Alison Findlay, Helen Ostovich

        Forker's critical edition fills the need for a fully annotated, historically contextualised and modernised text of the most important Elizabethan chronicle play apart from Shakespeare and Marlowe's Edward II. Now attributed definitely to George Peele, this drama helped to establish a major theatrical genre, raising contemporary political and religious issues through the dramatisation of medieval history in a compelling and popular fashion. A major source for Shakespeare, it throws new light on the bard's adaptation of earlier drama and helps to illustrate his working methods. With the full introduction and generous notes this Revels Plays edition will be the first port of call for students and enthusiasts of Elizabethan and early modern drama. ;

        Die große Regression

        Eine internationale Debatte über die geistige Situation der Zeit

        by Arjun Appadurai, Zygmunt Bauman, Donatella Porta, Nancy Fraser, Eva Illouz, Ivan Krastev, Bruno Latour, Paul Mason, Pankaj Mishra, Robert Misik, Oliver Nachtwey, César Rendueles, Wolfgang Streeck, David Reybrouck, Slavoj Žižek, Heinrich Geiselberger

        Spätestens seit sich die Folgen der Finanzkrise abzeichnen und die Migration in die Europäische Union zunimmt, sehen wir uns mit Entwicklungen konfrontiert, die viele für Phänomene einer längst vergangenen Epoche hielten: dem Aufstieg nationalistischer, teils antiliberaler Parteien wie dem Front National und der AfD, einer tiefgreifenden Krise der EU, einer Verrohung des öffentlichen Diskurses durch Demagogen wie Donald Trump, wachsendem Misstrauen gegenüber den etablierten Medien und einer Verbreitung fremdenfeindlicher Einstellungen, die an dunkle Zeiten gemahnt. Politiker werden als »Vaterlandsverräter« verunglimpft, Muslime unter Generalverdacht gestellt, im Internet werden die krudesten Verschwörungstheorien propagiert. In diesem Band untersuchen international renommierte Forscher und Intellektuelle die Ursachen dieser »Großen Regression«, verorten sie in einem historischen Kontext, erörtern Szenarien für die nächsten Jahre und diskutieren Strategien, mit denen wir diesen Entwicklungen entgegentreten können. Mit Beiträgen von Arjun Appadurai, Zygmunt Bauman, Donatella della Porta, Nancy Fraser, Eva Illouz, Ivan Krastev, Bruno Latour, Paul Mason, Pankaj Mishra, Robert Misik, Oliver Nachtwey, César Rendueles, Wolfgang Streeck, David Van Reybrouck, Slavoj Žižek.

        Postkapitalismus

        Grundrisse einer kommenden Ökonomie

        by Paul Mason, Stephan Gebauer

        Drei Dinge wissen wir: Der Kapitalismus hat den Feudalismus abgelöst; seither durchlief er zyklische Tiefs, spätestens seit 2008 stottert der Motor. Was wir nicht wissen: Erleben wir eine der üblichen Krisen oder den Anbruch einer postkapitalistischen Ordnung? Paul Mason blickt auf die Daten, sichtet Krisentheorien – und sagt: Wir stehen am Anfang von etwas Neuem. Er nimmt dabei Überlegungen auf, die vor über 150 Jahren in einer Londoner Bibliothek entwickelt wurden und laut denen Wissen und intelligente Maschinen den Kapitalismus eines Tages »in die Luft sprengen « könnten. Im Zeitalter des Stahls und der Schrauben, der Hierarchien und der Knappheit war diese Vision so radikal, dass Marx sie schnell in der Schublade verschwinden ließ. In der Welt der Netzwerke, der Kooperation und des digitalen Überflusses ist sie aktueller denn je. In seinem atemberaubenden Buch führt Paul Mason durch Schreibstuben, Gefängniszellen, Flugzeugfabriken und an die Orte, an denen sich der Widerstand Bahn bricht. Mason verknüpft das Abstrakte mit dem Konkreten, bündelt die Überlegungen von Autoren wie Thomas Piketty, David Graeber, Jeremy Rifkin und Antonio Negri und zeigt, wie wir aus den Trümmern des Neoliberalismus eine gerechtere und nachhaltigere Gesellschaft errichten können.

        The Arctic in the British imagination 1818–1914

        by Andrew Thompson, John M. MacKenzie, Rob David

        The Arctic region has been the subject of much popular writing. This book considers nineteenth-century representations of the Arctic, and draws upon an extensive range of evidence that will allow the 'widest connections' to emerge from a 'cross-disciplinary analysis' using different methodologies and subject matter. It positions the Arctic alongside more thoroughly investigated theatres of Victorian enterprise. In the nineteenth century, most images were in the form of paintings, travel narratives, lectures given by the explorers themselves and photographs. The book explores key themes in Arctic images which impacted on subsequent representations through text, painting and photography. For much of the nineteenth century, national and regional geographical societies promoted exploration, and rewarded heroic endeavor. The book discusses images of the Arctic which originated in the activities of the geographical societies. The Times provided very low-key reporting of Arctic expeditions, as evidenced by its coverage of the missions of Sir John Franklin and James Clark Ross. However, the illustrated weekly became one of the main sources of popular representations of the Arctic. The book looks at the exhibitions of Arctic peoples, Arctic exploration and Arctic fauna in Britain. Late nineteenth-century exhibitions which featured the Arctic were essentially nostalgic in tone. The Golliwogg's Polar Adventures, published in 1900, drew on adult representations of the Arctic and will have confirmed and reinforced children's perceptions of the region. Text books, board games and novels helped to keep the subject alive among the young.

        The Legacy of John Polidori

        The Romantic Vampire and its Progeny

        by Sam George, Bill Hughes

        John Polidori's novella The Vampyre (1819) is perhaps 'the most influential horror story of all time' (Frayling). Polidori's story transformed the shambling, mindless monster of folklore into a sophisticated, seductive aristocrat that stalked London society rather than being confined to the hinterlands of Eastern Europe. Polidori's Lord Ruthven was thus the ancestor of the vampire as we know it. This collection explores the genesis of Polidori's vampire. It then tracks his bloodsucking progeny across the centuries and maps his disquieting legacy. Texts discussed range from the Romantic period, including the fascinating and little-known The Black Vampyre (1819), through the melodramatic vampire theatricals in the 1820s, to contemporary vampire film, paranormal romance, and science fiction. They emphasise the background of colonial revolution and racial oppression in the early nineteenth century and the cultural shifts of postmodernity.

        John Ashbery and American Poetry

        by David Herd

        starting point. David Herd sets out to provide readers with a new critical language through which they can appreciate the beauty and complexity of Ashbery's writing. Presenting the poet in all his forms -avant-garde, nostalgic, sublime and camp - the book argues that the perpetual inventiveness of Ashbery's work has always been underpinned by the poets desire to write the poem fit to cope with its occasion. Tracing Ashbery's development in the light of this idea, and from its origins in the dazzling artistic environment of 1950's New York, the book evaluates his poetry against the aesthetic, literary and historical backgrounds that have informed it. The story of a brilliant career, and a history of the period in which that career has taken shape, John Ashbery and American Poetry provides a compelling account of Ashbery's importance to Twentieth Century Literature. ;
