        The Barefoot Doctor

        by Can Xue

        The novel tells of the story about the growth of a barefoot doctor in a village. By means of the experiences of Sister Yi the barefoot doctor, Mi Yi, Hui Ju and other characters, the author manages to expose the real dependence relationship between man and nature, and between man and man, so as to construct a new kind of relationship in the future world from a brand-new perspective with lots of astounding descriptions. The scenes depicted in the novel belong to the future world, the plots, however, firmly stick to the reality. Thus the real and free conceptions in the novel are both down-to-earth and overwhelmingly shocking, from which every ordinary reader can find resonance and gain strength for life in it. Once again, the outlook of philosophy and nature of Can Xue has delicately and simply stood out in the novel in a literary way.

        Child, nation, race and empire

        Child rescue discourse, England, Canada and Australia, 1850–1915

        by Margot Hillel, Shurlee Swain, Andrew Thompson, John Mackenzie

        Child, nation, race and empire is an innovative, inter-disciplinary, cross cultural study that contributes to understandings of both contemporary child welfare practices and the complex dynamics of empire. It analyses the construction and transmission of nineteenth-century British child rescue ideology. Locating the origins of contemporary practice in the publications of the prominent English Child rescuers, Dr Barnardo, Thomas Bowman Stephenson, Benjamin Waugh, Edward de Montjoie Rudolf and their colonial disciples and literature written for children, it shows how the vulnerable body of the child at risk came to be reconstituted as central to the survival of nation, race and empire. Yet, as the shocking testimony before the many official enquiries into the past treatment of children in out-of-home 'care' held in Britain, Ireland, Australia and Canada make clear, there was no guarantee that the rescued child would be protected from further harm. ;

        La communauté juive de Cuba

        by Dr. Jay Levinson

        La communauté juive de Cuba : Les Années d'Or, 1906-1958 par le Dr. Jay Levinson En 1906, Manuel Hadida convoqua une réunion de onze juifs dans son bureau. Un membre de sa famille venait de mourir, et le but de la réunion était de fonder une synagogue et un cimetière juif pour les quelques cent « colons hébreux » de Cuba. Lors d'une autre réunion qui suivit peu de temps après, des responsables furent élus, mais pendant l'automne de le même année 1906, le trésorier nouvellement élu mourut à son tour. Ce furent les débuts de la communauté juive de Cuba, qui devait éventuellement atteindre le nombre de plus de 15 000 membres à son zénith pendant les années 1940 et 1950. Cette étude, première du genre et complète, retrace l'histoire de cette communauté, reconstituant de nombreux événements longtemps oubliés. Le premier rabbin sur l'île serait venu de Floride, où il aurait été le propriétaire d'une fabrique de crème glacée, et se serait rendu à Santiago de Cuba et à La Havane. Au cours de la Deuxième Guerre Mondiale, un abattoir de viande cachère aurait fonctionné à Cuba pour les soldats de la U.S. Army. Meyer Lansky, connu pour ses activités clandestines, a présenté une application pour devenir membre d'une synagogue de La Havane. Le livre permet aussi de mieux comprendre certains points d'histoire mieux connus. Le refus du gouvernement de Cuba d'autoriser le paquebot St. Louis à laisser débarquer ses passagers est examiné avec une vision de la fuite des juifs de l'Europe nazie, particulièrement en direction du Mandat de Palestine, où la politique d'immigration des britannique était en train de changer (ce qu'ignoraient les cubains). La construction de nouvelles synagogues à la veille de la Révolution est considérée dans le contexte des nouveaux riches et de la migration vers les banlieues. Jay Levinson, un fonctionnaire civil en retraite et écrivain indépendant, a publié un grand nombre de livres et d'articles à propos de ses nombreux voyages dans plus de 50 pays. Il écrit beaucoup à propos des sites juifs et de histoire de ce peuple. Levinson a un doctorat de l'Université de New York et il est actuellement professeur invite au John Jay College. Pour écrire ses livres, le Dr. Levinson interroge un grand nombre de gens, consulte des documents dans les archives, examine les journaux de l'époque correspondante, visite les sites, et il a parcouru les cimetières de Cuba à la recherche d'informations – même sur les pierres tombales. Une édition en anglais pour l'Amérique du Nord a été publiée en 2007.

        LIKE, WHAT?Graphical Teasers for Young Readers

        by Gideon Bar Sinai

        Like many adults, children are naturally inquisitive. They easily grasp principles, find challenges, and enjoy dealing with them; but how do you encourage their curiosity? When they come upon such an original book, it is like a treasure chest of surprises: colorful, intelligent, and fascinating. This is a unique concept, primarily intended to entertain young and adult readers alike. The utilization and encouragement of their natural curiosity enhance the book's enjoyment. The entire series contains 81 multicolor graphical teasers that cover a rich and diverse world of events. Each teaser conceals a riddle, where its discovery is a challenge within itself. While attempting to decipher the mystery, the reader develops an expertise in creative and investigative thinking, as well as abstraction, spatial perception, and imagination. Author Gideon Bar-Sinai explains: “The book goes beyond stimulating the readers' curiosity and desire to investigate, confronting them with the complexity of our world. It clarifies that the world is not as simple and structured as suggest most psychometric books, which are the dogmatic, one-dimensional antithesis of Like, What?” This brilliant series expands the reader’s imagination with the colorfulness and humor invested in it; although containing but a few words, it provides the young readers – and their parents who have not yet lost their natural curiosity – with entertainment, learning, insight, and enjoyment. As a universal book without words, it transcends the barriers of age, language, and culture, and makes for an ideal gift. A sequel with 27 additional graphic teasers will be published soon. Gideon Bar-Sinai, 49, married and father of three, former pilot with a B.Sc. in computer sciences, worked for many years in software development and held senior management positions in several Hi-tech companies. Like, What? is the first volume in this original series of graphic-teaser books.

        by Andy Woodage

        In the footsteps of Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series comes Andy Woodage's debut novel and our entrance into his bio-engineered fantasy world. The After-Time Chronicles: One Small Spark is a young-adult fantasy novel of good, evil, genetically engineered creatures, romance, blood, and the search for belonging. It’s a world where armies no longer build metal monsters, but biological horrors. A world where genetic engineering has become the art of war. This is 12-year-old Jothan’s world. Orphaned by a terrible accident, he dreams of leaving his uneventful life with his grandparents on the family’s griffin farm. However, when a catastrophic attack wipes out every homestead in The Zoological Zone, his world is turned upside down. He finds himself thrust into a story larger than he ever dreamed, embarking on a rough journey with a mysteriously appearing warrior to the fabled ‘Temple of Elohim’. Accompanied by his best friend, the griffin Gozell, Jothan sets off across a land ravaged by poverty and wild creatures. Battling his way across the dangerous landscape, his eyes are opened to an empire in the grip of war and unrest... with the ever increasing weight of his role in events to come. Will they make it to the Temple? Will they be welcomed when they arrive? Can Jothan unravel the secrets that seem to control the lives of everyone he meets, including his mysterious saviour?

        Terry Nation

        by Jonathan Bignell, Andrew O'Day

        This is the first in-depth study of the science fiction television devised and written by Terry Nation. Terry Nation was the inventor of the Daleks and wrote other serials for 'Doctor Who'; he also wrote the BBC's 1970s post-apocalyptic drama 'Survivors' and created the space adventure series 'Blake's 7'. Previously television science fiction in Britain has received little critical attention. This book fills that gap and places Nation's work in the context of its production. Using Terry Nation's science fiction work as a case study, the boundaries around the authorship and authority of the television writer are explored in detail. The authors make use of BBC's archival research and specially conducted interviews with television producers and other production staff, to discuss how the programmes that Terry Nation created and wrote were commissioned, produced and brought to the screen. The book makes an important contribution to the study of British television history and will be of interest to enthusiasts of Terry Nation's landmark drama series as well as students of Television Studies.

        Des Poissons plein le Mer

        by Dr. Bella Galil

        Des Poissons plein le Mer – Un Guide Pratique de Gastronomie Marine - par le Dr. Bella Galil  Ce guide allie une description concise et une connaissance biologique de base des espèces de poissons et fruits de mer les plus populaires, ainsi que des anecdotes historiques et petits secrets culinaires. Chaque espèce est accompagnée d’un dessin scientifique précis et de ses noms dans les différentes langues des pays méditerranéens. Dr. Galil, spécialiste en biologie marine à l’Institut National d’Océanographie de Haïfa, Israël,. mène depuis près de vingt ans des recherches sur la faune marine en Méditerranée. Dans le cadre de ses recherches, l’auteur a été aménée à plonger dans l’océan Pacifique, Atlantique et l’océan Indien, et a décrit de nombreuses nouvelles espèces dans divers publications scientifiques. Lors de ses voyages, Dr; Galil a également recueilli auprès de pêcheurs ou collègues une collection de recettes, qu’elle a d’ailleurs essayé dans sa propre cuisine et décrit dans son livre. Bien qu’écrit dans un style courant, ce livre ne compromet nullement l’exactitude scientifique, et fournit au lecteur tout ce qui est utile de savoir sur les poissons comestibles et les fruits de mer ordinairement trouvés près des côtes méditerranéennes. Des Poissons plein la Mer est certainement un régale pour les amoureux de poissons et fruits de mer, mais aussi un guide de ressources inestimables pour les cuisiniers amateurs ou professionnels. Ce livre comprend plus de 120 espèces différentes, toutes illustrées en détail. Ce titre initialement publié en noir et blanc (avec la possibilité d’ajouter de 16 à 32 illustrations en couleur) a déjà rapporté un franc succés à notre société et je suis sûre qu’il en sera de même pour votre compagnie. Si la possibilité de publier une édition en français de cet ouvrage, ou un projet de co-édition vous intéresse, c’est avec plaisir que nous vous ferons parvenir un supplément d’information et/ou un exemplaire de l’original hébreu, accompagné de la traduction en anglais de passages choisis

        Love's Sacrifice

        by A. T. Moore

        A. T. Moore's thorough commentary on "Love's Sacrifice" is designed to be of use to all kinds of readers, from students of Early Modern drama to specialists in the field. The notes provide full explanations of obscure words and phrases, and offer analyzes of many aspects of staging and interpretation. The text for this edition is based on a fresh study of the quarto of 1633, the only authoritative early text. In his introduction to the play, Moore reappraises the evidence for the play's date of composition. He also looks at the circumstances of the play's genesis, presenting detailed discussions of both the theater where "Love's Sacrifice" was first performed and the acting company for which it was written. Arguing that Ford's adaptation of his source materials is the key to interpreting this remarkably allusive play, Moore provides a wealth of new information about Ford's sources.The introduction also includes a survey of critical responses, an overview of the play, stage history, and a bibliography of relevant secondary material. This new volume in the "Revels Plays" series is the most detailed and comprehensive edition of "Love's Sacrifice" ever published - and the first modern-spelling edition of Ford's tragedy in more than a century. The play's textual history is discussed in an appendix. A second appendix examines possible links between "Love's Sacrifice" and the real-life story of the murdered Italian prince and musician Carlo Gesualdo. ;
