The authors provide a detailed summary of the latest scientific findings on the influence of movement on cognitive ability. They describe the effects of movement, on old age, embodiment, emotion, school as well as other factors that influence cognition. Sweet Cherries

        by Lynn Long, Gregory Lang, Clive Kaiser

        This new book provides comprehensive coverage of the history, genetic improvements, production physiology of growth and cropping, orchard establishment and management, and harvest considerations for sustainable cherry production. Written by a renowned team of experts, this book emphasises the scientific principles underlying cherry production practices. It acts as a resource for a scientific foundational understanding of plant growth and cropping, providing the key to both reasoned choice of orchard practices and the solution of future problems. The book: - Covers improved sweet cherry fruiting varieties and rootstocks. - Describes state-of-the-art tree training and production systems. - Considers production risk management technologies and decisions. Heavily illustrated and presented in full colour throughout, Sweet Cherries is written with practical details and underlying physiological concepts for use by beginning and established fruit growers, consultants, and advisors, with a primary focus on fresh market sweet cherries, in addition to students and professionals in horticulture.

        Knowing COVID-19

        The pandemic and beyond

        by Des Fitzgerald, Fred Cooper

        Knowing COVID-19 demonstrates how researchers in the humanities shone a light on some of the many hidden problems of COVID-19, in the very depths of the pandemic crisis. Drawing on eight COVID-19 research projects, the volume shows how humanities researchers, alongside colleagues in the clinical and life sciences, addressed some of the major critical unknowns about this new infectious disease - from the effects of racism to the risks of deploying shame; from how to design an effective instructional leaflet to how to communicate effectively to bus passengers. Across eight novel case studies, the book showcases how humanities research during a pandemic is not only about interpreting the crisis when it has safely passed, but how it can play a vital, collaborative and instrumental role as events are still unfolding.

        Postharvest Physiology and Hypobaric Storage of Fresh Produce

        by Stanley P Burg

        Hypobaric (low-pressure) storage offers considerable potential as a method to prevent postharvest loss of horticultural and other perishable commodities, such as fruit, vegetables, cut flowers and meat. Yet hitherto there has been no comprehensive evaluation and documentation of this method and its scientific basis.Written by the world’s leading authority on hypobaric storage Postharvest Physiology and Hypobaric Storage of Fresh Produce fills this gap in the existing literature. The first part of the book provides a detailed account of the metabolic functions of gases, and the mechanisms of postharvest gas exchange, heat transfer and water loss in fresh produce. The effect of hypobaric conditions on each process is then considered, before a critical review of all available information on hypobaric storage. This includes horticultural commodity requirements, laboratory research, and the design of hypobaric warehouses and transportation containers.

        Samuel Beckett

        Eine Biographie

        by James Knowlson, Wolfgang Held, James Knowlson

        Als Samuel Beckett, einer der innovativsten und einflußreichsten Autoren des 20.Jahrhunderts, 1989 starb, war er weltberühmt. Spät – erst mit der Pariser Uraufführung von En attendant Godot 1953 – richteten sich die Scheinwerfer auf den öffentlichkeitsscheuen Autor.Beckett, 1906 geboren, studierte in Dublin und in Paris, wo er sich James Joyce anschloß. Ein erster Band mit Erzählungen erschien 1934. Drei Jahre später verließ er Irland für immer und zog nach Paris, aus dem ihn die deutsche Besatzung vorübergehend vertrieb. Verlage wagten sich an seine Bücher kaum heran – bis der Erfolg des Godot diesen und den materiellen Schwierigkeiten ein Ende bereitete. Jedoch um sein Schreiben, um eine Verfassung, die ihm das Schreiben überhaupt erlaubte, hat Beckett ein Leben lang gerungen.James Knowlson, der das Beckett-Archiv in Reading aufbaute, hat Becketts Werk mehr als dreißig Jahre erforscht. Mehr als zwanzig war er mit dem Autor befreundet. Ein halbes Jahr vor seinem Tod autorisierte Beckett Knowlsons Biographieprojekt: Er »ist der, der mein Werk am besten kennt«. Auch zu Becketts Leben förderte Knowlson viel Unbekanntes ans Licht. So erhielt er als erster Zugang zu den aufregenden Tagebüchern von Becketts Deutschlandreise 1936/37. Mit seinen umfassenden Kenntnissen kann er zeigen, wie auch Becketts spätere Werke, die biographische Anspielungen eher vermeiden, in Leben und Denken des Autors verwurzelt sind.Fünf Jahre nach der englischen Erstveröffentlichung erscheint James Knowlsons große, definitive Biographie Samuel Becketts im Suhrkamp Verlag, der das Werk des irischen Nobelpreisträgers seit einem halben Jahrhundert deutsch in vielen (oft zwei- und dreisprachigen) Ausgaben

        Contemporary British poetry and the city

        by Peter Barry, Kim Latham

        Though poets have always written about cities, the commonest critical categories (pastoral poetry, nature poetry, Romantic poetry, Georgian poetry, etc.) have usually stressed the rural, so that poetry can seem irrelevant to a predominantly urban populati. Explores a range of contemporary poets who visit the 'mean streets' of the contemporary urban scene, seeking the often cacophonous music of what happens here. Poets discussed include: Ken Smith, Iain Sinclair, Roy Fisher, Edwin Morgan, Sean O'Brien, Ciaran Carson, Peter Reading, Matt Simpson, Douglas Houston, Deryn Rees-Jones, Denise Riley, Ken Edwards, Levi Tafari, Aidan Hun, and Robert Hampson. Approaches contemporary poetry within a broad spectrum of personal, social, literary, and cultural concerns. Includes 'loco-specific' chapters, on cities including Hull, Liverpool, London, and Birmingham, with an additional chapter on 'post-industrial' cities such as Belfast, Glasgow and Dundee. ;
