Two thirds of Japan is covered with forest that is rapidly reaching maturity and could be felled in the near future. This would dramatically increase domestic timber supply and have implications, not only for Japan, but also the main timber exporting nations of the world. However, Japanese domestic supply has been stagnating and forest management has become less intensive. At the same time, timber suppliers to Japan are themselves coming under various pressures which are likely to lead to reductions in their timber harvests and export potential. This book examines these issues and looks at what would happen if Japan were to utilise this resource within the next two decades, from both a domestic and international point of view. Primarily aimed at advanced students of forestry, economics and business, this book will also be of interest to government research agencies, timber processors and exporters of timber to Japan.

Committees are a pervasive presence in the EU policy process yet little is known about the way in which they operate. This volume, newly available in paperback, brings together an international group of experts from a number of disciplinary backgrounds to provide a comprehensive account of the role played by committees in the European Union. The book looks at committees in the context of inter-institutional relations, a focus based on the recognition that the relationships between Commission, Council, Parliament and national authorities - rather than the institutions themselves - are crucial to the understanding of European policy-making. Much of that interaction is regularised in various kinds of committees and the book provides an in-depth analysis of the nature and the effects of 'committee governance' in the EU system. A number of case studies (monetary, policy, trade, environment, spatial planning and foreign policy) examine the role of committees in specific areas. The fine arts reflecting the War of Resistance Against Japan extended their trails of development in a particular historical period, in which the Chinese fine arts developed in an unprecedented manner. Taking pencils and painters as their weapons, artists threw themselves in the War of Resistance Against Japan, which was like a raging fire. With patriotic enthusiasm, they created reputable works in the history of Chinese fine arts and invented a series of methods in creation influencing later generations. After the founding of New China in 1949, a group of artists in the army and other artists created paintings and pictures reflecting the various periods of the War of Resistance Against Japan, e.g. Tunnel Warfare, Five Heroes on Langya Mountain, A Great Campaign Waged by a Hundred Regiments, The Massacre in Nanjing, Eight Women Soldiers Would Rather Drown Themselves in a River Than Surrender and so on. The book collects art works of this theme made during the War of Resistance Against Japan and since 1949. More than 500 pictures with abundant notes referring to the background exhibit the history of the fine arts reflecting the War of Resistance Against Japan and artists' participation in culture.

This book tells the story of critical avant-garde design in Japan, which emerged during the 1960s and continues to inspire designers today. The practice communicates a form of visual and material protest drawing on the ideologies and critical theories of the 1960s and 1970s, notably feminism, body politics, the politics of identity, and ecological, anti-consumerist and anti-institutional critiques, as well as the concept of otherness. It also presents an encounter between two seemingly contradictory concepts: luxury and the avant-garde. The book challenges the definition of design as the production of unnecessary decorative and conceptual objects, and the characterisation of Japanese design in particular as beautiful, sublime or a product of 'Japanese culture'. In doing so it reveals the ways in which material and visual culture serve to voice protest and formulate a social critique.

To address the Sino-Japanese dispute of Diaoyu Islands (referred to as Ryukyu Islands by the Japanese), it is necessary to study the history of Ryukyu. In this book, the author collects abundant documents and makes some breakthrough on the unsettled history of Diaoyu Islands. In recent years, Japan has argued that Diaoyu Islands is an outlying island of Okinawa Prefecture, thus should belong to Japan. This book demonstrates that Diaoyu Islands never belongs to Okinawa, supported by suffcient historical facts, effectively refuting the absurdity of Japan’s argument. This book was written in the historical order from Sui Dynasty (581-618) with the earliest records on Ryukyu to the end of the World War II when Ryukyu was eventually included into Japan. Having studied Sino-Japanese relations for many years, the author notes down how Ming and Qing Dynasties of China protected and helped Ryukyu, and how Ryukyu paid tributes to China for fve centuries.

Grown in various regions of Asia, the Mediterranean and across the Americas, loquats suit both temperate and subtropical areas, sharing the same environmental conditions as citrus. Loquat is an increasingly commercial crop in some Asian and European countries with a good amount of international trade. Recent research has focused on improving crop yields and quality. Over 100 different varieties have been developed to meet both growers' and consumers' demands. These developments have contributed to a better understanding of the crop environment, plant growth and physiology of tree and fruit development with implications for both breeding and cultivation.
