        The Surname Detective

        Investigating surname distribution in England since 1086

        by Colin Rogers

        From the author of The Family Tree Detective, this guide provides the amateur genealogist or family historian with the skills to research the distribution and history of a surname. Colin Rogers uses a sample of 100 names, many of them common, to follow the migration of people through the centuries. Each of the 100 names is mapped since the Doomsday book in 1086. For those whose name is not among the sample, the book shows how to find out where namesakes live now, how they moved around the country through time, and how the name originated from a placename, a nickname or an occupation. Colin Rogers finishes this work by showing how the distribution of surnames can be studied irrespective of the size of the surrounding population, and reaches some interesting conclusions about which names are more reliable guides to migration since the 14th century. ;

        Coline Serreau

        by Brigitte Rollet

        Coline Serreau became famous in 1985 when her third film, Trois hommes et un couffin (Three Men and a Baby), the most successful French film of the 1980s. She was already known in France for her major contribution to feminist documentaries with the acclaimed Mais qu'est-ce qu'elles veulent?, a series of interviews with French women made between 1975 and 1977. She is now a key figure in French cinema and drama, with international hits including Romuald et Juliette (1989) and La Crise (1992). This appraisal of her work situates her films within the social, cultural and political context of France since May 1968, and assesses th emajor impact of the women's movement on French society and culture. Politics and sexual politics, two key aspects of Serreau's films and plays, are thoroughly examined. This book also considers the cultural influences of her work, and provides an overview of her films and filmic skills. Special attention is given to comedy, the cinematographic genre favoured by Serreau and the French audience, which is apprehended from a historical and gendered perspective. The clarity of the style and the wide-ranging analysis of Serreau's films and filming techniques make this book relevant both to students of film and film enthusiasts.

        Postdemokratie revisited

        by Colin Crouch, Frank Jakubzik

        Mit seinem Buch Postdemokratie sorgte Colin Crouch 2008 in Deutschland für Furore. In seiner so pointierten wie scharfsinnigen Analyse konstatiert er, dass die Demokratie in den westlichen Gesellschaften im Begriff sei, zur bloßen Hülle zu werden: demokratische Wahlen und Institutionen würden zwar aufrechterhalten, politische Entscheidungen jedoch de facto in den Chefetagen der Wirtschaft getroffen. Das Buch wurde zum Überraschungserfolg. Colin Crouch hatte eine Debatte um den Verfall der repräsentativen Demokratie losgetreten und ihr mit ›Postdemokratie‹ einen Namen gegeben.Jetzt legt Crouch eine Bestandsaufnahme seiner Thesen vor: Wie gut haben verschiedene Demokratien die Corona-Pandemie bewältigt? Wie hat der Aufstieg des Rechtspopulismus demokratische Erosionsprozesse beeinflusst? Und welche Rolle spielen feministische Forderungen im Kampf gegen die Postdemokratie?

        Gig Economy

        Prekäre Arbeit im Zeitalter von Uber, Minijobs & Co.

        by Colin Crouch

        Ob Foodora, Deliveroo oder Uber – die Unternehmen der Plattformökonomie bieten denen, die für sie arbeiten, oft das Schlechteste aus beiden Welten: die Unfreiheit von Angestellten gepaart mit der Unsicherheit von Freelancern. Die sogenannte Gig Economy ist allerdings nur die Spitze des Eisbergs. Längst ist auch das Standard-Beschäftigungsmodell in die Krise geraten: Minijobs und aufgeweichter Kündigungsschutz, unfreiwillige Teilzeit und Zeitarbeit sind allesamt Facetten einer Entwicklung, die den Arbeitsmarkt des globalen Nordens seit den späten siebziger Jahren erschüttert. Colin Crouch liefert eine differenzierte Analyse und bietet Vorschläge für zeitgemäße Reformen, mit denen die Unsicherheiten auf dem Arbeitsmarkt abgefedert werden könnten.

        Ist der Neoliberalismus noch zu retten?

        by Colin Crouch

        Dass es den Neoliberalismus gar nicht gibt, dass es sich dabei nur um einen »Kampfbegriff« handelt, ist zu einem Hauptargument (dem letzten?) seiner Verteidiger geworden. Kaum ein Autor hat dabei so viel zum Verständnis dieses Konzepts beigetragen wie Colin Crouch. Angesichts des rechtspopulistischen Widerstands gegen die marktradikale Form der Globalisierung, angesichts von wachsender Ungleichheit und von Tragödien wie der Brandkatastrophe im Londoner Grenfell Tower stellt Crouch nun die Frage, ob der Neoliberalismus noch zu retten ist. Jenseits polemischer »Dämonologie« und ohne das Kind mit dem Bade auszuschütten, analysiert er die Schwachpunkte dieses Ansatzes. Mit der ihm eigenen Blindheit für seine sozialen Nebenfolgen ist der, so Crouch, Neoliberalismus endgültig selbstzerstörerisch geworden. Werden die Konzerne und Individuen, die bislang von ihm profitieren, das einsehen und endlich umsteuern?

        The family tree detective

        Tracing your ancestors in England and Wales

        by Colin Rogers

        The long-awaited fourth edition of this best-selling manual continues to offer up-to-date guidance both to newcomers and to the more experienced, on how to make best use of the labyrinth of genealogical sources in England and Wales. It takes into account recent, and even some future, changes to the civil registration system, and incorporates many of the vast sources newly available on the internet. There is also a substantial bibliography for those who discover that their ancestors migrated from other countries. New appendices provide research into underregistration of birth and death, and hitherto unpublished details from the 1915 and 1939 National Registers. The family tree detective remains an indispensible source of information on how to locate births, marriages and deaths, and alternative strategies if those searches fail. Dr Colin D. Rogers is a Fellow of the Society of Genealogists, a member of AGRA (the Association of Genealogists and Researchers in Archives), and was for thirty years the Hon. General Editor of the Lancashire Parish Register Society. He runs a consultancy helping banks and solicitors to identify and locate beneficiaries. ;

        Über das befremdliche Überleben des Neoliberalismus

        Postdemokratie II

        by Colin Crouch, Frank Jakubzik

        Spätestens als Lehman Brothers im September 2008 Insolvenz anmelden mußte, hatte es für einen kurzen Moment den Anschein, als habe die letzte Stunde des Neoliberalismus geschlagen: Nachdem das Mantra vom Markt und von der Privatisierung seit den siebziger Jahren in aller Munde war, sollten nun die Regierungen eingreifen, um systemrelevante Banken zu retten. Die Kompetenz der Wirtschaftsführer stand massiv in Frage. Heute, nur drei Jahre später, bekommen die Manager wieder riesige Boni. Zur Refinanzierung der Rettungspakete werden Sozialleistungen gekürzt. Die Logik des radikalen Wettbewerbs und des unternehmerischen Selbst prägt nach wie vor unsere Mentalität. Wie ist das möglich? Diese Frage stellt Colin Crouch in seinem großen neuen Essay. Der Autor des vielbeachteten Bestsellers »Postdemokratie« zeichnet die Ideengeschichte des Neoliberalismus nach und betont, daß der Konflikt Staat vs. Markt zu kurz greift: Es sind die gigantischen transnationalen Konzerne, unter denen die Demokratie »und« das Marktmodell leiden. Doch wir können uns wehren, indem wir uns auf unsere Werte und unsere Macht als Verbraucher besinnen. Das ist Crouchs optimistische Vision einer sozialen und demokratischen Marktwirtschaft.

        In the shadow of Enoch Powell

        Race, locality and resistance

        by Shirin Hirsch, John Solomos

        Fifty years ago Enoch Powell made national headlines with his 'Rivers of Blood' speech, warning of an immigrant invasion in the once respectable streets of Wolverhampton. This local fixation brought the Black Country town into the national spotlight, yet Powell's unstable relationship with Wolverhampton has since been overlooked. Drawing from interviews and archival material, this book offers a rich local history through which to investigate the speech, bringing to life the racialised dynamics of space during a critical moment in British history. What was going on beneath the surface in Wolverhampton and how did Powell's constituents respond to this dramatic moment? The research traces the ways in which Powell's words reinvented the town and uncovers highly contested local responses. While Powell left Wolverhampton in 1974, the book returns to the city to explore the collective memories of the speech which continue to reverberate. In a contemporary period of new crisis and national divisions, revisiting the shadow of Powell allows us to reflect on racism and resistance from 1968 to today.

        Climate Change and Global Health

        by Colin Butler

        There is increasing understanding, globally, that climate change will have profound and mostly harmful effects on human health. This authoritative book brings together international experts to describe both direct (such as heat waves) and indirect (such as vector-borne disease incidence) impacts of climate change, set in a broad, international, economic, political and environmental context. This unique book also expands on these issues to address a third category of potential longer-term impacts on global health: famine, population dislocation, and conflict. This lively yet scholarly resource explores these issues fully, linking them to health in urban and rural settings in developed and developing countries. The book finishes with a practical discussion of action that health professionals can yet take. Now with added chapter updating key changes affecting climate change and health through 2015, culminating with UN secretary general Ban Ki Moon's hopeful comment "What was once unthinkable is now unstoppable". Climate change, now clearly worsening, is triggering a powerful social and technological response. Will this response be sufficient to avert its potentially catastrophic "tertiary" health effects? ; In this authoritative book, international experts examine long-recognised areas of health concern for populations vulnerable to climate change, describing effects that are both direct, such as heat waves, and indirect, such as via vector-borne diseases. ; a: Contributorsb: Acronymsc: Acknowledgementsd: Dedication - Colin D.
