The French empire at war draws on original research in France and Britain to investigate the history of the divided French empire - the Vichy and the Free French empires - during the Second World War. What emerges is a fascinating story. While it is clear that both the Vichy and Free French colonial authorities were only rarely masters of their own destiny during the war, preservation of limited imperial control served them both in different ways. The Vichy government exploited the empire in an effort to withstand German-Italian pressure for concessions in metropolitan France and it was key to its claim to be more than the mouthpiece of a defeated nation. For Free France too, the empire acquired a political and symbolic importance which far outweighed its material significance to the Gaullist war effort. As the war progressed, the Vichy empire lost ground to that of the Free French, something which has often been attributed to the attraction of the Gaullist mystique and the spirit of resistance in the colonies. In this radical new interpretation, Thomas argues that it was neither of these. The course of the war itself, and the initiatives of the major combatant powers, played the greatest part in the rise of the Gaullist empire and the demise of Vichy colonial control.

The uncanny forms of novelistic characterization

Drawing on the recent ontological turn in critical theory, Spectral Dickens explores an aspect of literary character that is neither real nor fictional, but spectral. This work thus provides an in-depth study of the inimitable characters populating Dickens' illustrated novels using three hauntological concepts: the Freudian uncanny, Derridean spectrality, and the Lacanian real. Thus, while the current discourse on character studies, which revolves around values like realism, depth, and lifelikeness, tends to see characters as mimetic of persons, this book invents new critical concepts to account for non-mimetic forms of characterization. These spectral forms bring to light the important influence of developments in nineteenth-century visual culture, such as the lithography and caricature of Daumier and J.J. Grandville. The spectrality of novelistic characters developed here paves the way for a new understanding of fictional characters in general.

Charles Dickens called his sister-in-law Georgina Hogarth his 'best and truest friend'. Georgina saw Dickens as much more than a friend. They lived together for twenty-eight years, during which time their relationship constantly changed. The sister of his wife Catherine, the sharp and witty Georgina moved into the Dickens home aged fifteen. What began as a father-daughter relationship blossomed into a genuine rapport, but their easy relations were fractured when Dickens had a mid-life crisis and determined to rid himself of Catherine. This book shows how the trial, which was organised by her enemies, provides an important window into late medieval attitudes towards religion and gender, as Joan was effectively persecuted by the established Church for her supposedly non-conformist views on spirituality and the role of women. Presented within a contextual and critical framework, this book encourages scholars and students to rethink this remarkable story. Charles Dickens wurde am 7. Februar 1812 in Landport, England als zweites von acht Kindern geboren. Er wuchs in ärmlichen Familienverhältnissen auf und lernte schon früh die Erfahrung von Hunger und Not kennen, als der Vater in Schuldhaft kam. Charles mußte für die Versorgung der Familie aufkommen und arbeitete, wie zahlreiche andere Kinder auch, in einer Lagerhalle und als Hilfsarbeiter in einer Fabrik. Nachdem die widrigsten Zeiten überstanden waren, setzte er mit vierzehn Jahren seinen Schulbesuch fort und arbeitete später als Schreiber bei einem Rechtsanwalt und als Zeitungsjournalist. Mit seiner Skizzensammlung Sketches by Boz (1836) und The Pickwick Papers (1837) hatte Dickens überraschend Erfolg und wurde schnell zu einem der bekanntesten Autoren Englands. Später erlangte er auch große Bekanntheit in den USA. Dickens erste Romane erschienen alle als Fortsetzungsgeschichten in Zeitungen, so auch eines seiner bekanntesten Werke, Oliver Twist (1837). Dickens war Herausgeber der Tageszeitung Daily News und der Zeitschrift Household Words. Neben der Schriftstellerei verdiente er sich sein Geld mit Lese- und Vortragsreisen in England und den USA. A Christmas Carol (1843), gehörte dabei zu seinem festen Leseprogramm. Charles Dickens starb am 9. Juni 1870 in Kent. Leo Feld, geboren 1869 in Augsburg und verstorben 1924 in Florenz, studierte in Wien Philosophie. Bereits während des Studiums war er für verschiedene Wiener Zeitungen tätig. Später machte er sich als Übersetzer und Schriftsteller einen Namen.
