Unter den Frauen der Romantik war Caroline Schlegel-Schelling (1763–1809) eine der faszinierendsten Persönlichkeiten. Eine »politisch-erotische Natur« nennt sie Friedrich Schlegel. An der Seite Georg Forsters erlebte sie die Mainzer Republik, als Ehefrau August Wilhelm Schlegels die Jenaer Frühromantik. Ihr Haus wird zum literarischen Zentrum: Novalis, Brentano, Tieck, Tischbein, Friedrich Schlegel, Goethe und Fichte sind dort ebenso zu Gast wie der junge Philosoph Schelling, dessen Frau sie 1803 wird. Ihre hinterlassenen Briefe sind Zeugnis eines ungewöhnlichen Lebens, das widerspruchsreich, erfüllt und unerfüllt war. Sigrid Damm hat die schönsten Briefe der Caroline Schlegel-Schelling ausgewählt und entwirft in ihrem Essay einfühlsam und voller Sympathie das Porträt einer Frau, die ihr Leben in historisch aufgezwungenen engen Grenzen zu gestalten wußte, die sich schon früh weigerte, im »Hauptzweck des Weibes« für sich den Hauptzweck des Lebens zu sehen.

Hyde Park (1632) is one of the best-loved comedies of James Shirley, considered to be one of the most important Caroline dramatists. The play showcases strong female characters who excel at rebuking the outlandish courtship of various suitors. Shirley's comic setting, London's Hyde Park, offers ample opportunity for witty dialogue. This is the first critical edition of the play, including a wide-ranging introduction and extensive commentary and textual notes. Paying special attention to the culture of Caroline London and its stage, the volume unpicks Shirley's politics of courtship and consent while also underlining the play's dynamics of class and power. A detailed performance history traces productions from 1632, across the Restoration to the present day, including that of the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1987. A textual history of the play's first quarto determines how it was printed and what relationship Hyde Park has to other texts by Shirley.

Caroline Schlegel-Schelling wurde am 2. September 1763 in Göttingen als Tochter eines angesehenen Universitätsprofessors geboren. Sie wuchs in einem intellektuellen Milieu unter Dichtern und Denkern auf und genoß eine hervorragende Bildung. Nach dem Tod ihres ersten Mannes heiratete sie 1796 den Literaturkritiker August Wilhelm Schlegel, trennte sich jedoch 1803. In dritter Ehe heiratete sie Friedrich Wilhelm Schelling, Philosoph und Professor an der Universität Jena. Ihre umfangreichen Briefwechsel erlangten als geistesgeschichtliche Dokumente der Romantik große Bedeutung. Sie schrieb u.a. mit Humboldt, Goethe, Schiller, Schlegel, Fichte, Novalis und Herder. Sie verfaßte außerdem Rezensionen, war Übersetzerin, Lektorin und Sekretärin für ihre Ehemänner Schlegel und Schelling. Caroline Schlegel-Schelling starb am 7. September 1809 in Maulbronn. Sigrid Damm, in Gotha/Thüringen geboren, lebt als freie Schriftstellerin in Berlin und Mecklenburg. Die Autorin ist Mitglied des P.E.N. und der Mainzer Akademie der Wissenschaften und Literatur. Sie erhielt für ihr Werk zahlreiche Auszeichnungen, unter anderem den Feuchtwanger-, den Mörike- und den Fontane-Preis. The main character is a young girl named Hatless who lives in the City of Hats. Here, all of the people are born with hats that cover their heads and faces. The world inside of their hats is dark, silent, and odorless. Hatless feels trapped underneath her own hat. She wants to take off her hat, but she is afraid, until she realizes that whatever frightening things exist in the world around her are there whether or not she takes off her hat to see them. So Hatless removes her hat. As Hatless takes in the beauty of her surroundings, she cannot help but talk about what she sees, hears, and smells. The other inhabitants of the city ostracize her because she has become different from them. It is not long before they ask her to leave the City of Hats. Rather than giving up or getting angry, Hatless feels sad for her friends and neighbors who are afraid to experience the world outside of their hats. She comes up with an ingenious solution: if given another chance, she will wear a hat as long it is one she makes herself. The people of the City of Hats agree, so Hatless weaves a hat that covers her head and face but does not prevent her from seeing the outside world. She offers to loan the hat to the other inhabitants of the city. One by one, they try it on and are enchanted by the beautiful world around them. Since then, no child has been born wearing a hat. The people celebrate by tossing their old hats in the air. By bravely embracing these values, Hatless improves her own life and the lives of her fellow citizens. Buti’s language is eloquent and clear. She strikes a skilled narrative balance between revealing Hatless’s inner thoughts and letting the story unfold through her interactions with other characters. Careful descriptions are accompanied by beautiful illustrations that reward multiple readings of the book.

Begegnung u. a. mit Johann Gottfried Herder, Johann Wolfgang Goethe und Friedrich Schlegel. Freundschaft mit Achim von Arnim. 1803 Heirat mit Sophie Mereau. Ab 1804 in Heidelberg. Mitarbeit an Achim von Arnims ›Zeitung für Einsiedler‹. 1808-18 in Berlin, wo er mit Heinrich von Kleist und Joseph von Eichendorff zusammentraf. 1819-24 Aufzeichnung und freie literarische Bearbeitung der Visionen der stigmatisierten Nonne Anna Katharina Emmerick in Dülmen. Dagmar von Gersdorff, geb. von Forell, stammt aus Trier/Mosel. Sie lebt heute als Literaturwissenschaftlerin und Biographin in Berlin. Verheiratet, drei Kinder. Studium der Germanistik und Kunstgeschichte an der Freien Universität Berlin. Ihre Promotion schrieb sie über den Einfluss der deutschen Romantik auf Thomas Mann. Für die Staatlichen Museen Preußischer Kulturbesitz verfaßte sie drei Text-Bild-Bände. Bekannt wurde sie durch ihre Biographien über bedeutende literarische und historische Persönlichkeiten: Marie Luise Kaschnitz, Bettina und Achim von Arnim, Goethes Mutter, Caroline von Günderrode, Goethes Enkel, Prinz Wilhelm von Preußen und Elisa Radziwill, Caroline von Humboldt. Ihr Werk wurde mit verschiedenen Preisen ausgezeichnet. Sie ist Mitglied des Verbandes deutscher Schriftstellerinnen und Schriftsteller sowie Mitglied des internationalen PEN.
