        Performing Herself

        Autobiography and Fanny Kelly's Dramatic Recollections

        by Gilli Bush-Bailey, Kate Dorney, Maggie B. Gale

        This unique book contains the never before published script of the first ever one-woman show, written by Fanny Kelly. The script was performed in Britain in the 1830s and 40s, based on Kelly's own experiences and offers a picture of the exuberant and often bizarre Georgian entertainment world. The performance text is introduced, edited and explained by Gilli Bush-Bailey, who focuses 21st-century revisionist scholarship on Kelly's story. It is an innovative contribution to the modern debate on biographical and autobiographical writing, whilst also being a valuable text for those who wish to study comedy and women's performance. The materials and methods of the modern stand-up routine are already to be seen in this unusual text. This book will appeal to students and scholars who are involved in performance, theatre history, or biography. It is also an accessible text for the interested general reader. ;

        Guava

        Botany, Production and Uses

        by Sisir Mitra

        Guava (Psidium guajava L.) is an exquisite, nutritionally and economically valuable crop of tropical and subtropical regions of the world. It outshines other tropical fruits in productivity, hardiness, adaptability, nutritional value, and ensures higher economic returns to growers. Guava is commercially grown in over 70 countries, and is gaining in popularity as a 'super fruit' due to its nutritional and health benefits. Notable recent developments include the potential to improve crop yields and quality. New research has also contributed to better understanding of the crop environment, plant growth and physiology of tree and fruit development, with implications for both breeding and cultivation. Guava is one of the few tree fruits where round-the-year harvest is possible by crop regulation. Interspecific hybridization with wild Psidium species has yielded hybrids which are resistant to wilt (a major guava disease in many countries) and are graft compatible. This book: · is the only publication available in English covering sustainable guava cultivation; · presents the current state of knowledge on the origin, history, physiology, culture and trade of guava throughout the world; and · addresses the major production and post-harvest problems. With contributions from international experts, this is a valuable resource for researchers and students in horticulture, and guava-industry support personnel.

        Agnes Grey

        Roman

        by Anne Brontë, Elisabeth Arx

        Die Schwestern Charlotte, Emily und Anne Brontë gehören bis heute zu den meistgelesenen Autorinnen des 19. Jahrhunderts. Als Töchter eines englischen Pfarrers wuchsen sie in der Abgeschiedenheit eines abgelegenen Pfarrhauses in West Yorkshire auf, wo sie bis zu ihrem Lebensende blieben. Bereits als Kinder verfaßten die Schwestern gemeinsam mit ihrem Bruder Branwell (1817-1848) die Erzählungen aus Angria. Als der Bruder jedoch alkohol- und drogenkrank wurde, waren die Schwestern aufgrund des frühen Todes der Mutter und der mangelnden Unterstützung des Vaters auf sich alleine gestellt. Ihre Werke erschienen zeitlebens unter den männlichen Pseudonymen Currer Bell (Charlotte), Ellis Bell (Emily) und Acton Bell (Anne).    Anne Brontё (1820-1849) war die jüngste der drei Schwestern. Sie arbeitete wie ihre Schwester Charlotte als Gouvernante. Diese Erfahrungen flossen in ihre Werke Agnes Grey und Die Herrin von Wildfell Hall ein. Sie erlag mit 29 Jahren der Tuberkulose.

        Was du nicht alles kannst!

        by Davina Bell, Allison Colpoys, Kathrin Köller

        Fledermäuse basteln, die Uhr lesen, Schiffchen bauen, malen, auf Drachen reiten, andere trösten, auf der Ukulele schrammeln, Schätze suchen, auf andere zugehen, Fragen stellen, tanzen, tagträumen – es gibt viel wichtigere Sachen im Leben eines Kindes als ›besser – schneller – weiter‹, als Schularbeiten und Tests, nämlich Fantasie und Herzensbildung und jede Menge Lebensfreude. Davina Bell und Allison Colpoys rauschen mit den Leserinnen und Lesern in gewitzten Reimen und knallig-fröhlichen Bildern durch all das, worin Kinder jeden Tag ganz nebenbei aufgehen und glänzen. Und zeigen dabei: Jeder kann etwas anderes gut, denn jeder ist einzigartig. Dieses lebendige, farbenfrohe Buch feiert all die Dinge, die jedes einzelne Kind ausmachen und ihm Wert verleihen – und das ist mehr als gute Noten, Stillsitzen und Bravsein.

        Alfie und der Clownfisch

        by Davina Bell, Allison Colpoys, Salah Naoura

        Der kleine Alfie möchte zu gerne zur Verkleidungsparty in der Schule gehen, sein Kostüm – ein Seestern – liegt schon bereit. Doch kurz davor verlässt ihn der Mut – er ist einfach zu schüchtern. Seine Mutter geht stattdessen mit ihm ins Aquarium, wo Alfie staunend vor der großen Glasscheibe steht und einen Clownfisch beobachtet, der sich kurz zeigt und dann gleich wieder zwischen den Korallen versteckt. »Manchmal müssen Clownfische sich einfach verstecken. So sind sie einfach«, sagt Alfies Mutter. »Menschen auch«, sagt Alfie. Doch bei der nächsten Verkleidungsparty traut er sich – im Kostüm eines Clownfischs. In wunderbar warmem Ton und poetischen Bildern erzählen Davina Bell und Allison Colpoys davon, dass man sich manchmal die Bettdecke über den Kopf ziehen muss und es einfach ein bisschen dauert, bis man bereit ist für die Welt da draußen.
