Linear Models for the Prediction of the Genetic Merit of Animals

by Raphael A Mrode, Ivan Pocrnic

The prediction of producing desirable traits in offspring such as increased growth rate, or superior meat, milk and wool production, is a vital economic tool to the animal scientist. Covering the fundamental principles of the application of linear models for the prediction of genetic merit in livestock, this new edition is fully updated to incorporate recent advances in methods of genomic prediction for pure and cross-bred animals. It provides models for the analysis of main production traits as well as functional traits, and includes numerous worked examples. The book covers: - models of survival analysis, social interaction and sire and dam models; - advancements in the use of SNPs in the computation of genomic breeding values; - single step approaches to genomics; - genomic non-additive models; - temporal and genomic analysis of genetic change. Suitable for postgraduate students, researchers and lecturers of animal breeding, genetics and genomics, this established textbook provides a thorough grounding in both the basics and new developments of linear models and animal genetics.

        Border images, border narratives

The political aesthetics of boundaries and crossings

        by Johan Schimanski, Jopi Nyman

This interdisciplinary volume explores the role of images and narratives in different borderscapes. Written by experienced scholars in the field, Border images, border narratives provides fresh insight into how borders, borderscapes, and migration are imagined and narrated in public and private spheres. Offering new ways to approach the political aesthetics of the border and its ambiguities, this volume makes a valuable contribution to the methodological renewal of border studies and presents ways of discussing cultural representations of borders and related processes. Influenced by the thinking of philosopher Jacques Rancière, this timely volume argues that narrated and mediated images of borders and borderscapes are central to the political process, as they contribute to the public negotiation of borders and address issues such as the in/visiblity of migrants and the formation of alternative borderscapes. The contributions analyse narratives and images in literary texts, political and popular imagery, surveillance data, border art, and documentaries, as well as problems related to borderland identities, migration, and trauma. The case studies provide a highly comparative range of geographical contexts ranging from Northern Europe and Britain, via Mediterranean and Mexican-USA borderlands, to Chinese borderlands from the perspectives of critical theory, literary studies, social anthropology, media studies, and political geography.

        Borderline-Störungen und pathologischer Narzißmus

by Otto F. Kernberg, Hermann Schultz

        On the Move

by Art studio Agrafka (Authors), Art studio Agrafka (Illustrators)

The universe is always on the move: Nothing in it remains completely at rest. Movement is natural: The Earth, the water on it, the atmosphere, the continents, and all living organisms exist in a state of constant motion. We walk, run, jump, crawl, swim, and fly. We travel. This book is about movement and travel—not only by people, but also that of animals, plants, the wind, water, and our planet. It describes journeys for the purpose of trade and commerce, journeys for the purpose of pleasure and repose or for survival, as well as scientific expeditions and pilgrimages. It’s about migrations, maps, navigation, and, finally, about finding your own path. Travellers often hear questions associated with "where" and "where from:" "Where are you going?", "Where are you from?" This book is a visual and intellectual expedition through thousands of years of movement, in search of answers to these as well as many other questions related to movement.       From 6 to 9 years, 2896 words Rightsholders: Ivan Fedechko,  ivan.fedechko@starlev.com.ua

Borders and conflict in South Asia

The Radcliffe Boundary Commission and the partition of Punjab

        by Lucy Chester

Borders and conflict in South Asia is the first full-length study of the 1947 drawing of the Indo-Pakistani boundary in Punjab. Using the Radcliffe commission as a window onto the decolonization and independence of India and Pakistan, and examining the competing interests, both internal and international, that influenced the actions of the various major players, it highlights British efforts to maintain a grip on India even as the decolonization process spun out of control. Drawing on extensive archival research in India, Pakistan, and Britain, combined with innovative use of cartographic sources, the book paints a vivid picture of both the partition process and the Radcliffe line's impact on Punjab. This book will be vital reading for scholars and students of colonialism, decolonization, partition, and borderlands studies, while providing anyone interested in South Asia's independence with a highly readable account of one of its most controversial episodes.

        The Empress’ First Investigation

        by Natalka Sniadanko

The rare violin, which was played by Mozart, is usually not taken abroad. An exception was made for the festival in Lviv, but no one even supposed that this would become an important link in the whole chain of terrible events. Unexpectedly for everyone and herself, the legendary Austrian Empress Sissy successfully investigates not only the mysterious attempt on her husband, but also a number of other mysteries. Natalka Sniadanko's new novel based on documentary materials about the life and adventures of the imperial family immerses the reader in a stunning detective story with political implications. An additional intrigue to this story is given by the two-dimensional plot story, due to which the events of the mid-19th century suddenly echo poignantly in Lviv at the beginning of the third millennium.

Bridges Instead of Walls, or What Unites Ukrainians?

        by Tetiana Teren

In this collection of essays, twenty Ukrainian intellectuals reflect on the phenomenon of social bridges and walls. Why do they both exist? Do bridges always bring understanding? Or do they perhaps sometimes allow crossing boundaries? Do walls necessarily separate? Or do they occasionally protect? With whom and how should we build bridges, and from whom shall we isolate by walls? The result of the media project of the Ukrainian branch of the International PEN Club, published in the New Time publication, is now under one cover. On the pages of the book, you will find essays by the following authors: Kateryna Kalytko, Kateryna Botanova, Vakhtang Kebuladze, Zoya Kazanzhy, Ostap Slyvinskyi, Olena Stiazhkina, Larysa Denysenko, Myroslava Barchuk, Viktoriya Amelina, Vitaliy Ponomariov, Vasyl Makhno, Volodymyr Rafeenko, Mykola Riabchuk, Volodymyr Yermolenko, Svitlana Pyrkalo, Borys Gudziak, Ihor Isichenko, Halyna Vdovychenko, Pavlo Kazarin, Vitaliy Portnykov. Transitional justice in process

        Plans and politics in Tunisia

        by Mariam Salehi

After the fall of the Ben Ali regime in 2011, Tunisia swiftly began dealing with its authoritarian past and initiated a comprehensive transitional justice process, with the Truth and Dignity Commission as its central institution. However, instead of bringing about peace and justice, transitional justice soon became an arena of contention. Through a process lens, the book explores why and how the process evolved, and explains how it relates to the country's political transition. Based on extensive field research in Tunisia and the US, and interviews with a broad range of international stakeholders and decision-makers, this is the first book to comprehensively study the Tunisian transitional justice process. It provides an in-depth analysis of a crucial period, examining the role of justice professionals in different stages, as well as the alliances and frictions between different actor groups that cut across the often-assumed local-international divide.

        Class, work and whiteness

Race and settler colonialism in Southern Rhodesia, 1919–79

        by Nicola Ginsburgh

This book offers the first comprehensive history of white workers from the end of the First World War to Zimbabwean independence in 1980. It reveals how white worker identity was constituted, examines the white labouring class as an ethnically and nationally heterogeneous formation comprised of both men and women, and emphasises the active participation of white workers in the ongoing and contested production of race. White wage labourers' experiences, both as exploited workers and as part of the privileged white minority, offer insight into how race and class co-produced one another and how boundaries fundamental to settler colonialism were regulated and policed. Based on original research conducted in Zimbabwe, South Africa and the UK, this book offers a unique theoretical synthesis of work on gender, whiteness studies, labour histories, settler colonialism, Marxism, emotions and the New African Economic History.
