Why did dustmen exercise an extended hold over the imagination of many Regency and Victorian artists and writers, including George Cruikshank, Henry Mayhew, Charles Dickens as well as numerous little known dramatists, caricaturists, print makers, journalists and novelists? This book, the first study of the cultural representation of the dust trade, provides many varied answers to this question by showing the ways in which London dustmen were associated with ideas of contamination, dirt, noise, violence, wealth, consumerism and threat. Viele Bilder sind verdientermaßen bekannt – von Man Ray, Berenice Abbott, Brancusi, Matisse, Jo Davidson, und Gisèle Freund –, andere sind sogar eifrigen Joyce-Verehrern unbekannt geblieben. Zusammengenommen bilden diese 90 Bilder die umfassendste Sammlung von Joyce-Bildnissen, die jemals für ein einzelnes Buch zusammengetragen worden ist. Wie wohl Joyce so einem Band begegnet wäre? Vielleicht in der Stimmung, in der er dem Maler Augustus John nach einer Sitzung schrieb: »Lob von einem halbblinden Pennypoeten wäre lächerlich, aber ihre Zeichnung ist ganz klar das einzige in diesem Buch, worüber man sich nicht streiten kann. Ich wünschte, ich selbst könnte die Linien besser sehen.« Doch auch Joyce hatte seine Grenzen, wie er schließlich einem der Künstler, die ihn malten, bekannte: »Ich hatte Bilder gern, aber jetzt sind die Nägel an den Wänden völlig genug.« Die Einführung schrieb Anthony Burgess, ein Fürsprecher von Joyces Werk, der kurz nach der Fertigstellung seines Textes starb. Bob Cato war ein preisgekrönter Buchgestalter, zu dessen Titeln Garbo, Swanson, Crawford & Dietrich; The Naive Surrealist (Über Oscar de Mejo), Corbusier, The Collected Poetry of Aimé Césaire und eine Serie über Life-Fotografen gehören. Er war außerdem Bildhauer, Maler, Collagist.

Colonial war played a vital part in transforming the reputation of the military and placing it on a standing equal to that of the navy. The book is concerned with the interactive culture of colonial warfare, with the representation of the military in popular media at home, and how these images affected attitudes towards war itself and wider intellectual and institutional forces. It sets out to relate the changing image of the military to these fundamental facts. For the dominant people they were an atavistic form of war, shorn of guilt by Social Darwinian and racial ideas, and rendered less dangerous by the increasing technological gap between Europe and the world. Attempts to justify and understand war were naturally important to dominant people, for the extension of imperial power was seldom a peaceful process. The entertainment value of war in the British imperial experience does seem to have taken new and more intensive forms from roughly the middle of the nineteenth century. Themes such as the delusive seduction of martial music, the sketch of the music hall song, powerful mythic texts of popular imperialism, and heroic myths of empire are discussed extensively. The first important British war correspondent was William Howard Russell (1820-1907) of The Times, in the Crimea. The 1870s saw a dramatic change in the representation of the officer in British battle painting. Up to that point it was the officer's courage, tactical wisdom and social prestige that were put on display.

Searle mit 'Intentionalität' eine Untersuchung zu einem Kernstück der Philosophie des Geistes vorgelegt, die in einem engen thematischen Zusammenhang mit den früheren Arbeiten steht. Intentionalität ist nach Searles Auffassung die Basis sprachlicher Bedeutung. In seiner Theorie der Intentionalität geht es um die begrifflichen Eigenschaften intentionaler Zustände (auf die Frage nach ihrem ontologischen Status geht er ausführlicher ein in 'Geist, Hirn und Wissenschaft', stw 591). Zwei Aspekte stehen dabei im Vordergrund der Untersuchung: die Logik der Repräsentation und der Kausalität intentionaler Zustände. Doch Searle entwickelt in dieser Arbeit nicht nur eine Theorie der Intentionalität und des Zusammenhangs zwischen sprachlichem und geistigem Inhalt. In einem vornehmlich kritischen Teil setzt er sich ausführlich mit konkurrierenden Auffassungen aus dem Bereich der analytischen Philosophie auseinander, insbesondere mit derzeit sehr einflußreichen 'nicht-deskriptivistischen' Theorien des Bezugs, wie sie von S. Kripke, H. Putnam, K. Donnellan, T. Burge und D. Kaplan vertreten und angeregt wurden.

Zu dem Direktor einer heruntergekommenen Theatertruppe in einer argentinischen Provinzstadt kommt eine Frau, nicht mehr jung, aber merkwürdig zeitlos gekleidet und frisiert, und bittet ihn, ein Stück von ihr aufzuführen. Der routinierte Theatermann glaubt zu verstehen: eine Dilettantin, die rasch abzufertigen ist. Aber die Frau insistiert, es gehe nicht um Literatur, sagt sie, sie brauche kein Publikum. Einen Titel hat das nicht aufgeschriebene Stück auch, Ein verwirklichter Traum. - Die kleine Szene, die dann improvisiert wird, scheint nichts anderes zu sein als das, ein glücklicher Traum einer Frau; aber was dort in wenigen Augenblicken auf der Bühne geschieht, sprengt die Vorstellungen von Glück und Unglück und übersteigt alles Begreifen des erfahrenen Theatermanns. Davon muß er erzählen. Mit wenigen Strichen eine Gestalt in ihrer widersprüchlichen persönlichen Wahrheit hervortreten zu lassen, eine Konstellation zweier Menschen wie eingeätzt zu umreißen, herausgelöst aus allen vorgegebenen Mustern: diese Kunst Onettis, seine an William Faulkner geschulte atmosphärische Präsenz, ist oft bewundert worden. Heute, wo sein Lebenswerk vorliegt, ist deutlicher zu sehen, daß er einer der großen Erzähler des 20. Jahrhunderts ist, dessen Rang vielleicht am klarsten damit benannt ist, daß er die literarische Moderne und die Brüchigkeit der Formen nicht noch einmal nachvollzieht, sondern erzählend hinter sich läßt. Onettis Geschichten können immer wieder gelesen werden; sie entfalten sich dabei in ihrer Vielschichtigkeit, ohne das Geheimnis ihrer Wirkung ganz preiszugeben. Die Geschichten des Uruguayers, dessen Gestalt früh zur Legende wurde, scheinen einer umfassenden Schwärze abgewonnen. Die Themen jedenfalls sind zumeist auf der Nachtseite zu finden: Liebe und Sexualität in ihren dunklen, unglücklichen Formen, unentrinnbare Einsamkeit von Mann und Frau, Scheitern als Grundform der menschlichen Existenz. Und doch ist seine Prosa überaus dicht an Glücksmomenten ganz eigener Art: den Augenblicken sinnlich erfahrbarer Erkenntnis, die verknüpft bleibt mit der schmerzhaften, unsauberen Erfahrung des Lebens.Neben seinen berühmtesten Erzählungen enthält der vorliegende Band in deutscher Erstübersetzung sieben Geschichten aus den vierziger und frühen fünfziger Jahren sowie zahlreiche Erzählungen und Skizzen, die seit den siebziger Jahren und bis kurz vor seinem Tod entstanden sind.
