        ‘Chords of freedom’

Commemoration, ritual and British transatlantic slavery

        by J. R. Oldfield

        How should we as Britons remember transatlantic slavery? How has slavery been remembered in the past? 'Chords of freedom' sets out to answer these questions and, in doing so, traces the way in which British transatlantic slavery has been absorbed into the nation's collective memory. By combining two current historiographical preoccupations - the construction of public memory and British transatlantic slavery - this fascinating book focuses on the way in which the British traditionally have been taught to view transatlantic slavery through the moral triumph of abolition. The author traces the construction of this national history through a number of case studies, including visual images, literary memorials (the competing accounts of the anti-slavery movement produced by Thomas Clarkson and Robert and Samuel Wilberforce), monument-memorials, galleries and museums, and commemorative rituals from the nineteenth century to the present day. A separate chapter also considers how Britain's example in abolishing first the slave trade (1807) and then colonial slavery (1833-34) impacted on the rituals of the American anti-slavery movement, and served as a convenient symbol of the potential of freedom in the British West Indies. 'Chords of freedom' offers valuable new insights into the way in which a 'culture of abolition' took root in Britain, and how our views of transatlantic slavery and figures like William Wilberforce have been revised and amended to reflect the changing demands of a series of 'present days'. Its cross-disciplinary approach will appeal to a broad spectrum of specialists, as well as to undergraduates and postgraduates. ;

        Rethinking Norman Italy

Studies in honour of Graham A. Loud

        by Joanna Drell, Paul Oldfield

This volume on Norman Italy (southern Italy and Sicily, c. 1000-1200) honours and reflects the pioneering scholarship of Graham A. Loud. An international group of scholars reassesses and recasts the paradigm by which Norman Italy has been conventionally understood, addressing varied subjects across four key themes: historiographies, identities and communities, religion and Church, and conquest. The chapters revise and refine our understanding of Norman Italy in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, demonstrating that it was not just a parochial Norman or Mediterranean entity but also an integral player in the medieval mainstream.

El sueño de la razon (The dream of reason)

        by Berna Gonzalez Habrour

DASHIELL HAMMETT PRIZE 2020 (Best Spanish crime fiction) Can death be a form of art? A literary tribute to Goya’s black paintings. Commissioner Ruiz returns to Madrid to prepare her defence. She has been suspended from the force. The city’s local holiday is in full swing and the banks of the Manzanares River are thronged with people. But the appearance of a series of animal corpses following a fixed pattern is the first sign of a problem that will soon leave another lethal mark: what appears to be the ritual murder of a young art student at one of the dams that controls the flow of the river. And it won’t be the only one. The police investigate a range of hypotheses, but events begin to point towards a series of scenarios that will lead Commissioner Ruiz to the legacy of Goya, connecting a plot that is extremely disturbing – and difficult to unravel. Can death imitate art? Can madness become a form of creativity? Which is more important: life, transcendence or freedom? Without her team, her uniform, her pistol, María Ruiz is forced to confront a highly intelligent adversary, one who is driven by obsession and will stop at nothing to manipulate those around him. A chilling journey through a territory where mental disorder becomes obsession, to a point where death is considered a form of art.

        The Heart of Cocoa

        500 Years of Chocolate History

        by Napoleone Neri

The temptation par excellence, that craving that suddenly arises and we cannot fight it unless we satisfy it: the desire for chocolate. Perhaps it is because of this power that it is called the most loved food on the planet. Or perhaps it is because its cultivation, production and consumption - which has been growing strongly in the last 10 years - are spread across all continents. Napoleon Neri tells its story, starting with the plant and its fruit, from the pioneers of chocolate, to the birth of confectionery factories in the 19th century and then the great modern industries. He describes in detail the processing and transformation of cocoa beans, their beneficial properties, the sensory characteristics of the finished product, and spices everything up with a thousand anecdotes and curiosities that only those who have lived and worked in this world for so long can know.

A True Story of Desert Survival in Joshua Tree

        by Ed Rosenthal

Los Angeles poet Ed Rosenthal’s hiking vacation turns deadly in soaring Mojave heat; his true survival story leaves you with chills.   Ed Rosenthal, “The Poet-Broker”, advocates for historic properties in downtown Los Angeles and negotiates to save them. In 2010, after closing his biggest deal, he skips town to Joshua Tree National Park, only to find himself inexplicably lost. Over six grueling days without water, food, or hope, snippets of his life and his hard-knock youth in Queens play over the inspiring yet deadly landscape in soaring 120-degree heat. The God of Random Chance has, despite his best efforts his whole life, finally caught up to him. He describes his ordeal and its setting in intimate, vivid detail: surreal visions mix with wayfinding and intuitive wisdom in a poet’s-eye view of the life-lessons and magic that the desert can hold.    Rosenthal’s shocking ordeal was covered on The Discovery Channel, local broadcast, The Weather Channel, in Los Angeles Magazine, and in an interview with Dick Gordon for “The Story” on National Public Radio, and by the Associated Press. In 2014 he was the subject of an episode of “Fight to Survive” with Bear Grylls on The Outdoor Channel. News of his ordeal was broadcast and published in Europe.

El amigo del novio ("The Friend of the Bridegroom")

Juan el Bautista: historia y teología ("John the Baptist: History")

        by Roberto Martínez Rivera

Despite the frequency with which many people listen to the mention of John the Baptist in liturgies and other celebrations, his figure remains largely unknown or proves enigmatic. Nevertheless, his importance in the New Testament is unquestionable. Jesus dedicates to him the highest praise anyone has ever been given: “Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist…” (Matthew 11:11); and the historian Flavius Josephus dedicates more space in the Baptist than in Jesus himself. But who really was John? Were he and Jesus cousins, as it is popularly said, or just relatives, as the Gospel of Luke 1:36) clearly states? Why did Jesus allow himself to be baptised by John with “a baptism for the forgiveness of sins” (Mark 1:4) if he was free from sin?
