Hannah Arendt und Theodor W. Adorno haben sich zeitlebens gegenseitig weder rezipiert noch geschätzt. Ihre wechselseitige Ablehnung setzt sich bis heute in Form von zwei getrennten Rezeptionskulturen fort, die auf theoretischer Ebene ein ›Entweder/Oder‹ suggerieren und politisch unterschiedliche Bedürfnisse zu befriedigen scheinen. Entgegen einer solchen Frontstellung erörtern die einzelnen Beiträge erstmals systematisch die Frage nach Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschieden der theoretischen und zeitdiagnostischen Reflexion der beiden Philosophen. Dabei zeit sich, daß es, über die Ähnlichkeit der Erfahrungshintergründe hinaus, bisher kaum beachtete Verbindungslinien zwischen den Werken gibt. Diskutiert werden insbesondere beider Analysen totaler Herrschaft sowie die Versuche, Philosophie und politisches Denken nach Auschwitz neu zu bestimmen. Dirk Auer ist wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter an der Carl von Ossietzky Universität Oldenburg. Lars Rensmann ist wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Institut für Politikwissenschaft der FU Berlin und Visiting Scholar am Department of History an der University of California in Berkeley. Julia Schulze Wessel ist wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Lehrstuhl ›Politische Theorie und Ideengeschichte‹ an der Technischen Universität Dresden.
