        John Polidori's novella The Vampyre (1819) is perhaps 'the most influential horror story of all time' (Frayling). Polidori's story transformed the shambling, mindless monster of folklore into a sophisticated, seductive aristocrat that stalked London society rather than being confined to the hinterlands of Eastern Europe. Polidori's Lord Ruthven was thus the ancestor of the vampire as we know it. This collection explores the genesis of Polidori's vampire. It then tracks his bloodsucking progeny across the centuries and maps his disquieting legacy. Texts discussed range from the Romantic period, including the fascinating and little-known The Black Vampyre (1819), through the melodramatic vampire theatricals in the 1820s, to contemporary vampire film, paranormal romance, and science fiction. They emphasise the background of colonial revolution and racial oppression in the early nineteenth century and the cultural shifts of postmodernity.

        As an instigator of debate and a defender of tradition, a man of letters and a popular hack, a writer of erotica and a spokesman for bishops, an urbane metropolitan and a celebrant of local custom, the various textual performances of Thomas Nashe have elicited, and continue to provoke, a range of contradictory reactions. Nashe's often incongruous authorial characteristics suggest that, as a 'King of Pages', he not only courted controversy but also deliberately cultivated a variety of public personae, acquiring a reputation more slippery than the herrings he celebrated in print. Collectively, the essays in this book illustrate how Nashe excelled at textual performance but his personae became a contested site as readers actively participated and engaged in the reception of Nashe's public image and his works.

        Nach seinen sprachphilosophischen Arbeiten ('Sprechakte', stw 458; 'Ausdruck und Bedeutung', stw 349) hat John R. Searle mit 'Intentionalität' eine Untersuchung zu einem Kernstück der Philosophie des Geistes vorgelegt, die in einem engen thematischen Zusammenhang mit den früheren Arbeiten steht. Intentionalität ist nach Searles Auffassung die Basis sprachlicher Bedeutung. In seiner Theorie der Intentionalität geht es um die begrifflichen Eigenschaften intentionaler Zustände (auf die Frage nach ihrem ontologischen Status geht er ausführlicher ein in 'Geist, Hirn und Wissenschaft', stw 591). Zwei Aspekte stehen dabei im Vordergrund der Untersuchung: die Logik der Repräsentation und der Kausalität intentionaler Zustände. Doch Searle entwickelt in dieser Arbeit nicht nur eine Theorie der Intentionalität und des Zusammenhangs zwischen sprachlichem und geistigem Inhalt. In einem vornehmlich kritischen Teil setzt er sich ausführlich mit konkurrierenden Auffassungen aus dem Bereich der analytischen Philosophie auseinander, insbesondere mit derzeit sehr einflußreichen 'nicht-deskriptivistischen' Theorien des Bezugs, wie sie von S. Kripke, H. Putnam, K. Donnellan, T. Burge und D. Kaplan vertreten und angeregt wurden.

        The Arctic region has been the subject of much popular writing. This book considers nineteenth-century representations of the Arctic, and draws upon an extensive range of evidence that will allow the 'widest connections' to emerge from a 'cross-disciplinary analysis' using different methodologies and subject matter. It positions the Arctic alongside more thoroughly investigated theatres of Victorian enterprise. In the nineteenth century, most images were in the form of paintings, travel narratives, lectures given by the explorers themselves and photographs. The book explores key themes in Arctic images which impacted on subsequent representations through text, painting and photography. For much of the nineteenth century, national and regional geographical societies promoted exploration, and rewarded heroic endeavor. The book discusses images of the Arctic which originated in the activities of the geographical societies. The Times provided very low-key reporting of Arctic expeditions, as evidenced by its coverage of the missions of Sir John Franklin and James Clark Ross. However, the illustrated weekly became one of the main sources of popular representations of the Arctic. The book looks at the exhibitions of Arctic peoples, Arctic exploration and Arctic fauna in Britain. Late nineteenth-century exhibitions which featured the Arctic were essentially nostalgic in tone. The Golliwogg's Polar Adventures, published in 1900, drew on adult representations of the Arctic and will have confirmed and reinforced children's perceptions of the region. Text books, board games and novels helped to keep the subject alive among the young.

        30 Jahre alt, ohne Resonanz auf seine bis dahin veröffentlichten drei Gedichtbände, vom eigenen überragenden schriftstellerischen Können allerdings überzeugt, schreibt Thomas Bernhard im Oktober 1961 an Siegfried Unseld: "Vor ein paar Tagen habe ich an Ihren Verlag ein Prosamanuskript geschickt. Ich kenne Sie nicht, nur ein paar Leute, die Sie kennen. Aber ich gehe den Alleingang." Obwohl der Suhrkamp Verlag das Manuskript ablehnte, gingen der Alleingänger und der Verleger seit dem Erscheinen von Bernhards erstem Roman "Frost" 1963 gemeinsam den Weg, der den Autor in die Weltliteratur führte. In den etwa 500 Briefen zwischen beiden entwickelt sich ein einzigartiges Zwei-Personen-Schauspiel: Mal ist es eine Tragödie, wenn etwa Bernhard die aus seinen Werken bekannten Schimpftiraden auf den Verleger losläßt, der seinerseits auf die Überzeugungskraft des Arguments setzt. Dann gibt Bernhard ein Kammerspiel mit Unseld als Held – 1973 schreibt er ihm: "mit grösster Aufmerksamkeit, mit allen Möglichkeiten, gehe ich gern mit Ihnen." 1984 agieren beide, bei der Beschlagnahme von "Holzfällen", als Kämpfer für die Literatur in einem von Dritten inszenierten Schurkenstück. Es dominiert das Beziehungsdrama: Der Autor stellt die für sein Werk und seine Person unabdingbaren Forderungen. Der Verleger seinerseits weiß, daß gerade bei Bernhard rücksichtslose Selbstbezogenheit notwendige Voraussetzung der Produktivität ist.         »Du musst das halt in meinem Sinn machen«, trägt Thomas Bernhard seinem Halbbruder Peter Fabjan auf, als er spürt, dass er nicht mehr lange zu leben hat. Und der sieben Jahre Jüngere gehorcht und übernimmt die Verantwortung, dieses Mal für ein schwieriges Erbe – so wie er es immer getan hat von Jugend an, wenn ihn der Ältere gebraucht hat. Den anderen galt er als »der liebe Bruder«, Fabjan selbst sieht sich eher als »Helfer in der Not«, denn oft genug fand er sich in der Rolle des Chauffeurs und dienstbaren Geistes wieder, der am Nebentisch saß, während der Bruder mit Persönlichkeiten aus Politik und Kunst parlierte. Peter Fabjan, Bruder und gleichzeitig behandelnder Arzt Thomas Bernhards, gibt in seinen Erinnerungen einen Einblick in das Leben an der Seite, besonders aber auch im Schatten des österreichischen Dramatikers und Romanschriftstellers, der Weltruhm erlangte. Er erzählt von den schwierigen und vielfach belasteten familiären Verhältnissen genauso wie von der Kriegskindheit, von gemeinsamen Reisen in die USA oder nach Portugal und von seinen Bemühungen um das Leben seines von langer und schwerer Krankheit gezeichneten Patienten.         The Aldine Edition of the Ancient Greek Epistolographers: Roots and Legacy

        This special issue of the Bulletin of the John Rylands Library is devoted to the Aldine edition of the Ancient Greek epistolographers. Published in Venice in 1499 by Aldus Manutius, the Aldine edition was the first printed edition of most of the thirty-six Greek letter collections that it contains. As such, it embodies the intersection between the medieval epistolary anthologies that predated it and the printed editions of Greek epistolographic collections that followed, which were primarily based on its text. In recent decades, the Aldien edition has been the subject of important works, which have sought to analyse its contents and sources. This issue explores the Aldine edition from three perspectives: its relationship to the epistolary collections found in medieval manuscripts, its relationship to the printed editions that followed it and its legacy and value for the modern scholar studying Ancient Greek epistolography.

        Four Saints in Three Acts by Gertrude Stein and Virgil Thomson was a major avant-garde phenomenon of the 1930s, an experimental opera that nonetheless achieved remarkable popular success. Photography was a key element of that success, but its complex roles in the construction, representation and dissemination of the opera have hitherto received little critical attention. The photographic recording of the all-African American cast in particular affords a unique insight into the complexities of Four Saints in relation to the Harlem Renaissance and the New York avant-gardes of the time. This book, published in collaboration with The Photographers' Gallery, London, presents a wide selection of photographs of the cast, performances, and other material - many images reproduced for the first time - alongside essays by an international range of scholars exploring different aspects of the opera, including dance, fashion, music, and avant-garde writing, as well as photography.
