        Catholic nuns and sisters in a secular age

        Britain, 1945–90

        by Carmen M. Mangion

        This is the first in-depth study of post-war female religious life. It draws on archival materials and a remarkable set of eighty interviews to place Catholic sisters and nuns at the heart of the turbulent 1960s, integrating their story of social change into a larger British and international one. Shedding new light on how religious bodies engaged in modernisation, it addresses themes such as the Modern Girl and youth culture, '1968', generational discourse, post-war modernity, the voluntary sector and the women's movement. Women religious were at the forefront of the Roman Catholic Church's movement of adaptation and renewal towards the world. This volume tells their stories in their own words.

        K u n s t UND A n g s t

        by DAVID BAYLES & TED ORLAND

        Worum geht es bei Kunst? Wohin bewegt sie sich? Welche Widerstände gibt es?   DAS SIND DIE FRAGEN, AUF DIE ES ANKOMMT, wiederkehrende Fragen, die sich in jedem Stadium der künstlerischen Entwicklung stellen. Sie sind der Ursprung für dieses Kompendium scharfsinniger Beobachtungen.   Kunst & Angst  erforscht, wie Kunst geschaffen wird, die Gründe, warum Kunstwerke oft nicht entstehen und die Art der Schwierigkeiten, die so viele Künstler dazu bringt, auf der Wegstrecke aufzugeben. Dieses Buch handelt davon, was du fühlst, wenn du in deinem Atelier oder im Lehrsaal sitzt, du an der Töpferscheibe oder am Keyboard, vor der Staffelei oder hinter deiner Kamera stehst und du versuchst, das Werk, das dir bestimmt ist, zu schaffen. Es geht darum, dass du deine Zukunft in die Hand nimmst, den Freien Willen über Vorherbestimmung, die Wahl vor den Zufall stellst. Es geht darum, dein eigenes Werk zu finden. A German-language eBook edition was published in late 2014 by Lindenfels Von Pressel Verlag, Frankfurt am Main.   134 pages, 14.5 cm x 21 cm

        J. M. W. Turner

        The making of a modern artist

        by Sam Smiles, Alan Rutter

        Alone of his contemporaries, J.M.W. Turner is commonly held to have prefigured modern painting, as signalled in the existence of The Turner Prize for contemporary art. Our celebration of his achievement is very different to what Victorian critics made of his art. This book shows how Turner was reinvented to become the artist we recognise today. On Turner's death in 1851 he was already known as an adventurous, even baffling, painter. But when the Court of Chancery decreed that the contents of his studio should be given to the nation, another side of his art was revealed that effected a wholescale change in his reputation. This book acts as a guide to the reactions of art writers and curators from the 1850s to the 1960s as they attempted to come to terms with his work. It documents how Turner was interpreted and how his work was displayed in Britain, in Europe and in North America, concentrating on the ways in which his artistic identity was manipulated by art writers, by curators at the Tate and by designers of exhibitions for the British Council and other bodies. ;

        AND THE WORLD WAS YOUNG (Vol. I)

        by Carmen Korn

        January 1st, 1950: in Cologne, Hamburg and San Remo, people ring in the new decade. The one before left deep scars in the cities and in people’s minds and hearts. Gerda and Heinrich Aldenhoven’s house in Cologne is bursting at the seams. Heinrich’s art gallery is not making enough money to feed all the hungry mouths. In contrast, Gerda’s friends Elisabeth and her husband Kurt in Hamburg don’t have money worries. As press officer of the savings bank, Kurt can provide a modest existence for his family. But they also yearn for a little more lightness in their lives. Their son-in-law Joachim still hasn’t returned from the war.  And Margarethe Aldenhoven has ended up in San Remo. Her life at her Italian husband’s side seems carefree, but she is tortured by her dependency on her mother-in-law. As differently as they all spent New Year’s Eve – out and about in Cologne, quietly at home in Hamburg, classily in San Remo – the questions on New Year’s Day are the same: will the wounds finally heal? What will the future bring?

        Nematodes as Model Organisms

        by Itamar Glazer, David I Shapiro-llan, Paul W. Sternberg

        Nematodes, which are small multi cellular organisms have been used as biological models since the 1960's. The nematode worm Caenorhabditis elegans is a free-living nematode, about 1mm in length, that lives in temperate soil environments. It is made up of about 1000 cells, and has a short life cycle of only 2 weeks. It was the first multicellular organism to have its whole genome sequenced. The book includes chapters that summarize the importance of nematodes as model organisms in the fields of genetics, developmental biology, neurobiology, pharmacology, nutrition, ecology and parasitology. Of interest to a broad audience across a wide spectrum of disciplines, the book is useful for biologists working on comparative studies to investigate biological processes across organisms; medical scientists and pharmacologist for exploration of drugs and medicine (including the use of genome editing to eliminate diseases); ecologists considering nematodes as indicators for environment changes; and parasitologists for host-parasite interactions. Many other researchers can use this book as a benchmark for the broad implications of nematology research on other aspects of science.
