Die von J. L. Austin entwickelte und von J. R. Searle fortgeführte Sprechakttheorie hat der sprachwissenschaftlichen Tradition eine neue Dimension in der Beschreibung sprachlicher Äußerungen eröffnet. Die Tatsache, daß mit sprachlichen Äußerungen Handlungen vollzogen werden, verlangt eine Klärung des Zusammenhangs zwischen dem Vollzug dieser Handlungen und der Bedeutung der dazu verwendeten sprachlichen Ausdrucksmittel. Eine Theorie kommunikativen Handelns ist dazu ebenso nötig wie eine Bedeutungstheorie, die sich den empirischen Gegebenheiten der gesprochenen Sprache nicht verschließt.
