        Reading Walter Benjamin

        Writing through the catastrophe

        by Richard Lane

        'Reading Walter Benjamin' explores the persistence of absolute in Benjamin's work by sketching-out the relationship between philosphy and theology apparent in his diverse writings, from the early youth-movement essays to the later books, essays and fragments. The book examines Benjamin from two main perspectives: a history-of-ideas approach situating Benjamin in relation to the new German-Jewish thinking at the turn of the twentieth-century, as well as the German youth movements, Surrealism and the 'Georgekreis'; and a conceptual approach examining more critical issues in relation to Benjamin and Kant, modern aesthetics and narrative order. Chapters cover: 'Kulturpessimismus' and the new thinking; metaphysics of youth: Wyneken and 'Rausch'; history: surreal Messianism; Goethe and the 'Georgekreis'; Kant's experience; casting the work of art; disrupting textual order; and exile and the time of crisis. The book uses new translations of Benjamin's essays, fragments and his 'Arcades Project', and makes substantial reference to previously untranslated material. Lane's text allows the non-specialist entry into complex areas of critical theory, simultaneously offering original readings of Benjamin and twentieth-century arts and literature. ;

        And Then They Ruined Everything

Book Two in the Death of Rock 'n' Roll Series

        by Duncan Milne

Every action has a reaction. Every reaction has a consequence. Every consequence creates a memory. Having overcome the impossibility of time travel, Kenneth Ramsayer and his best friend exist to relive past rock ’n’ roll gigs. Everything is going well; they’ve become heroes, they’ve discovered love, they had the world by the tail, and then they ruined everything. Based on what is left of their ruined music collections, it appears that rock ’n’ roll died in 1984. Their unassailable knowledge of music, leads the boys to recall that in 1984 an unknown patron made a bootleg recording of a Replacements gig. This cassette was recovered and became the live album “The Shit Hits The Fans”. The history of rock ‘n’ roll was forever changed. Now in a viciously evil plot, a thief has absconded with the recording. But what if the death of rock ’n’ roll isn’t connected to the missing cassette? Seeking help from unlikely sources and following fading memories, the boys travel across America in a bid to save rock ’n’ roll. An intelligent satire, the second novel in the Death of Rock ’n’ Roll series, “And Then They Ruined Everything” cleverly uses the concept of time travel in a rock ’n’ roll setting as an examination of choices and the power of art in society.

        Poetic Licence

        by Kevin Price

An explosive political thriller novel pitching people-smuggling, corruption and murder against the boundaries of truth and freedom.   '... a block of shadow pushes against a diffusing moonlight, the golden halo spreads out into the vineyards from its sides and drains into the night like blood on a carpet'   Art Lazaar is a writer with a poetic licence. In short, it secretly puts him in service to a mysterious government agency. As a result, he is assigned to doubling as an academic, but his poetic licence also ties him to a past he can't escape. And when a figure from that same past calls him, he must act. First, to protect a young asylum seeker running from those who murdered her brother. And secondly, to find the murderers. It's not a call he can refuse.   The call as much as guarantees Lazaar stumbles into a murky world of corruption. It leads to threats of arrest, kidnap and torture. As a result, he is left for dead. The situation grows ever more dire as suspects disappear, die, or leave the country in the nick of time. In the end, his choices come down to the only weapon in his arsenal ...   A meticulously crafted political thriller novel.   Poetic Licence's spellbinding and suspenseful plot, with its complex web of characters, thrusts the reader into a world deeply etched in our psyches. It leaves no doubt as to who is to blame and where the responsibility lies. The politics of truth and freedom do not rest easily in this funny, angry and endlessly entertaining novel. Alan Carter and David Whish-Wilson attest to it.   Poetic Licence dives headlong into a  world of political and institutional corruption, exposing the vast gulf between the words and deeds of the powerful, between the lives of the haves and have-nots, and the casual mistreatment of asylum seekers. Written in terse, propulsive prose, Poetic Licence is a clever thriller that won't disappoint. David Whish-Wilson   A vividly-realised Fremantle is the apt setting for this zeitgeisty thriller. Hunter is an original and kick-ass protagonist.Alan Carter   A smart and utterly distinctive slice of Ozzie-noir, set in Fremantle where "evil breeds like the flies on a sheep's arse."

        The Merchant of Bullshit

        by J.D.B.

A rotting gene has infiltrated mankind’s cognitive process at an advanced level and turned it into gibberish.  Moreover, the Dronzyme, an integral part of the Detox Unorthodox advocated by major forces in the Consultancy Sector, actively stimulates the production of this gene via a benign mucous in the larynx. Soon, under the auspices of the Catallus Group, a new language and functionality possesses the mindset, and no one is considered immune. The Capital itself becomes a repository for degenerate ideas and concepts, whose terror becomes flesh with the birth of a quasi-physical oaf. Herein is the awful truth of the Schnimp, and the Corporate Giants now forced to obey its commands... in a unprecedented wave of NONSENSE. The explanation: The Merchant of Bullshit is a satire on the City of London, and its all-pervading, meaningless jargon, part of the global war against intelligence, as documented by someone who worked nights for over 15 years immersed in it. The author: (location unknown) lives in a shed in Myrddin’s Precinct where he communes with drunken spirits and entities, and launches vitriolic assaults against the Satanic Inertias of the Capital, soon to be revisited in The Gnat.  A series of endless night-shifts in the Ancient City of London drives him to the terrifying conclusion that its entire existence is a Hoax – a bankrupt Government, media and economy imprisoned in a Tower of Babble.  But can a man certified as insane – twice – complete his mission to rescue the intellectual heritage of his Nation?  Who knows.  For now, he sleeps amid the empty quarts and flasks, waiting to spring forth from his chrysalis...

      • My White

        by Ksenia Burzhskaya

A sensational and highly anticipated novel by Ksenia Burzhskaya, a Russian renowned journalist, writer, and co-host of the YouTube channel White Noise, together with the famous Russian writer, Tatyana Tolstaya. Ksenia is also a speechwriter for Alisa (a voice assistant and Yandex’s alternative to Alexa) and the winner of the literary competition My First Pain (2008) organized by another great Russian author, Ludmila Ulitskaya. My White is set in the modern day. Throughout the book, the main character, sixteen-year-old girl Jane (Zhenya) is preparing for a New Year school performance. Zhenya was brought up by her two moms, artist Alexandra and doctor Vera. But despite that, she faces the same problems every other teenager does: she studies, meets up with friends, falls for a boy, and tries her best to get over an unrequited love and her parents’ divorce. Zhenya’s ultimate goal and destination in the novel, the concert, has two purposes: to gather her mothers and hopefully make them change their mind about the divorce, and to give her a chance to confess to Lyonya, head of their music club and the guy she is secretly in love with.   The novel has two central story lines. The first is a constant rehearsal, anticipation and premonition, that may be more important than the event itself. The second is memories, regrets, attempts to find your own way and answer the eternal questions: what is love? can it last forever? why do we love at all?

        City Stories

        by Angelo R. Lacuesta

When I was young I dreaded leaving my city for the countryside. It meant leaving the space around me: a small desk, a twin-sized bed, and the wall beside it, covered with posters of my favorite bands. There was also the street I lived on, my best friend’s house two blocks away, the store another block after that. A little farther out was the avenue lined with the grocery stores, cafés, and videogame arcades I regularly visited. Across it was the school I attended. And just a bus and jeepney ride away was the mall I went to with friends for ice cream and sausage sandwiches and comic books. The only time I was ever happy to leave was on the rare occasion I was visiting another city—often more advanced and more exciting, with skylines that soared higher, with brighter lights and busier streets. But even there I felt right at home, surrounded by millions of people and their millions of stories, in which the city became the foreground or the background, the hero or the villain, the familiar or the alien, the inexhaustible or the disposable. In this collection, I’ve chosen to briefly revisit the cities that I’ve written about across two decades of writing. Most of the stories have been extensively rethought and rewritten, and I hope that they offer a fresh experience to old readers, young citizens, and new visitors alike. Welcome to my cities, and thank you for your stay.

        The Plan

        by Marco Belpoliti

The plan is a journey like those of the travelling salesmen who used to follow the country roads. The geographical space across which the book moves is the Po plain; the cities it describes are Milan, Modena, Mantua, Reggio Emilia, Ravenna, Bologna, and others. In each of these fascinating urban worlds history has created unique characteristics. Cultural signals evoke today and yesterday. Figures of artists, actors, directors, novelists, poets, strange and bizarre individuals parade in front of the reader’s eyes like characters out of a Fellini film. Some are still alive, many are dead, but all belong to an artistic and intellectual world with clearly recognizable features. Each character has a story set on the banks of the Po, or under the arcades of the cities scattered across its plain. They are stories of encounters, for the material from which the author draws inspiration comes from his friendships, associations and collaborations. So Pianura is an account of an age of art and creativity from the 1970s to the present day. Like Claudio Magris’s Danubio, it is a journey through cultural memory which conjures up a surprising portrait of those regions which have known the ideals of secular emancipation and communist utopia, and today are experiencing a regression into political localism. A portrait of agricultural countryside inhabited by characters who people an extraordinary narrative, a sentimental journey, an assemblage of fragments of memory which together form one of the most original cultural novels of recent years.

        Le regole degli infami

        by Fulvio Luna Romero

A work of noir fiction that digs deep into the turbulent soil of north-eastern Italy, recounting from within the criminal infiltrations which infest it. Drawing inspiration from recent events, Fulvio Luna Romero has crafted a ruthless and passionate novel driven by adrenaline, suspense, and continuous plot twists.   The Jesolo peninsula is a strange place. A splinter of land surrounded by the sea on one side and the Venetian lagoon on the other; during the summer, it is a bustling hotspot for partygoers and holidaymakers. But during the winter, the crowds disperse, reducing Jesolo to little more than a town which stands across from the world’s most beautiful city. This piece of land is controlled by the Company, a sprawling criminal organisation run by Andrea Salvi. From drugs to prostitution, from construction to arcades: on the Jesolo peninsula, nothing happens without his say-so. But Salvi is not a boss like any other. He shuns the ‘gangster’ label, preferring instead to keep a low profile. His dirty work is carried out by three men: Africa, a heavy-handed man from Campania; Black, a reserved and hardworking man from Lombardy; Striker, a crackhead and goal-scorer for the local football team. Alongside his girlfriend Valentina – who conceals her determination behind an icy, quick-witted exterior – these are the only people he trusts. One day, however, during a substantial marijuana delivery, something goes wrong, and someone is killed during a run-in with the police. Salvi feels cornered. And in a moment like that, one cannot practice caution; he has to make himself heard, and prove that no one can get away with challenging the Company. And so, as Jesolo goes up in flames, the boss and his right-hand men discover that the truth is much more complicated than it may seem; that the line between fighting crime and building your life around it is incredibly fine and easy to cross. You may suddenly find yourself on the other side.
