        The reign of Richard II

        From minority to tyranny 1377–97

        by Alison McHardy

        The long-awaited prequel to Chronicles of the revolution covers the first twenty years (1377-97) of Richard II's reign. This richly-documented period offers exceptional opportunities and challenges to students, and the editor has selected material from a wide range of sources: well-known English chronicles, foreign chronicles and legal, administrative and financial records. These are arranged chronologically to form a coherent narrative of the reign. Clear and lively commentary and notes enable readers to make the fullest use of each document. The introduction describes the complex domestic and international situation which confronted the young king and offers guidance on the strengths and weaknesses of the reign's leading chronicles. The dramatic and diverse politics of the reign of Richard II make this the ideal special subject and an accessible, affordable, student-friendly documentary history of Richard II's reign has long been needed. This book is designed to fill that gap.

        Die Gute Gesellschaft

        Soziale und demokratische Politik im 21. Jahrhundert

        by Christian Kellermann, Henning Meyer

        Als Ferdinand Lassalle im Mai 1863 den Allgemeinen Deutschen Arbeiterverein gründete, tat er dies noch in einer anderen Welt. 150 Jahre später kann die deutsche Sozialdemokratie große Erfolge vorweisen. Angesichts der Globalisierung, Individualisierung und des Wandels der Arbeitswelt steht sie jedoch vor komplexen Herausforderungen, für die sie überzeugende Antworten entwickeln muss. In diesem Band denken kluge Köpfe aus Wissenschaft und Politik darüber nach, wie eine »Gute Gesellschaft« heute aussehen könnte und auf welchen Wegen sie sich realisieren lässt. Mit Beiträgen von Sebastian Dullien, Colin Crouch, Andrea Nahles, Julian Nida-Rümelin, Gesine Schwan u. v. a.

        Theatre and religion

        Lancastrian Shakespeare

        by Richard Dutton, Alison Findlay, Richard Wilson

        This important collection of essays focuses on the place of Roman Catholicism in early modern England, bringing new perspectives to bear on whether Shakespeare himself was Catholic. In the Introduction, Richard Wilson reviews the history of the debate over Shakespeare's religion, while Arthur Marotti and Peter Milward offer current perspectives on the subject. Eamon Duffy offers a historian's view of the nature of Elizabethan Catholicism, complemented by Frank Brownlow's study of Elizabeth's most brutal enforcer of religious policy, Richard Topcliffe. Two key Catholic controversialists are addressed by Donna Hamilton (Richard Vestegan) and Jean-Christophe Mayer (Robert Parsons). Robert Miola opens up the neglected field of Jesuit drama in the period, whilst Sonia Fielitz specifically proposes a new, Jesuit source-text for Timon of Athens. Carol Enos (As You Like It), Margaret Jones-Davies (Cymbeline), Gerard Kilroy (Hamlet) and Randall Martin (Henry VI 3) read individual plays in the light of these questions, while Gary Taylor's essay fittingly investigates the possible influence of religious conflicts on the publication of the Shakespeare First Folio. Theatre and religion: Lancastrian Shakespeare as a whole represents a major intervention in this fiercely contested current debate. ;

        Angela Davis löscht ihre Website

        Listen, Refrains, Abbildungen

        by Andreas Neumeister

        »Erst wenn schließlich auch die Werbeblöcke gestrichen werden,« so eine zuverlässige Faustregel, »ist die Sache wirklich ernst.« Eine weltmachterschütternde Kamikaze-Aktion oder wenigstens ein rekordverdächtiger Amoklauf vor der eigenen Haustür – es muß knüppeldick kommen, um die tägliche Infotainment-Maschinerie aus dem Takt zu bringen. »Das System, in dem wir leben«, ist auf den ersten Blick mehr ein mediales als ein politisch-ökonomisches. Auf den zweiten Blick ist beides identisch. In »Angela Davis löscht ihre Website« verbinden sich politisches Denken und Pop, der forcierte Blick auf die Gegenwarts-Oberfläche und dessen ständige Infragestellung vor dem Hintergrund der Historie auf. »Vortäuschung falscher Tatsachen«, so die Frage, »oder Vortäuschung richtiger Tatsachen?« Schwer zu durchschauen – gerade angesichts von Gewalt und kriegerischer Auseinandersetzung und ihren jeweiligen Rechtfertigungen –, was Realität ist, was Medienrealität, was auslösende Gewalt, was angeblich gerechte »Vergeltung der Vergeltung der Vergeltung«. »Gibt es die neue Weltordnung schon?« In »Angela Davis löscht ihre Website« geht es um nichts Geringeres als um »das Zeitalter, in dem wir leben/ die Epoche, in der wir leben«, in der Gegensätze und Haltungen mitunter ununterscheidbar geworden sind; Veronas Welt und Sofies Welt stehen ebenso selbstverständlich nebeneinander wie MTV und CNN. »Kriegsfilm?/ Antikriegsfilm?/ Kriegsberichterstattung?« heißt es wiederholt aus dem Off, denn es gilt die unmißverständliche Losung: »seit 5 Uhr 45 wird zurückgefragt.«

        Yann Andréa Steiner

        by Marguerite Duras, Andrea Spingler

        Sommer 1980. Die Geschichte »zwischen dem sehr jungen Yann Andréa Steiner und dieser Frau, die Bücher machte und die alt war und allein wie er« beginnt in Trouville. Behutsam skizziert Duras die aufkeimende Liebe, die den Tod von Anfang an in sich birgt. Parallel dazu erzählt sie von der unmöglichen Liebe zwischen dem kleinen Samuel Steiner und seiner Betreuerin Johanna Goldberg. Samuels Schwester wurde von den Nazis ermordet, seine Eltern deportiert. Yann Andréa wird zu Yann Andréa Steiner, und nicht allein der gemeinsame Name drückt die mythische Verwandtschaft zu Samuel, dem ebenfalls viel jüngeren Geliebten, aus. Duras' Erzählung von ihrer Liebe und der Angst darum schreitet mit dem Rhythmus der Wellen, des Windes und des Regens fort. Die Gespräche mit Yann führen zu einer weiteren Figur: Theodora Kats, eine in den Konzentrationslagern umgekommene junge Frau, deren Geschichte Duras nie hat aufschreiben können. Mir unbeschreiblicher Sogwirkung verknüpft die Duras Fiktion und Realität und macht aus »Yann Andréa Steiner« eine literarische Liebeserklärung an den langjährigen Gefährten.

        Der Fall Wagner

        Schriften-Aufzeichnungen-Briefe. Herausgegeben und mit einer Chronik sowie einem Nachwort versehen von Dieter Borchmeyer

        by Friedrich Nietzsche, Dieter Borchmeyer, Dieter Borchmeyer

        Friedrich Nietzsche wurde am 15. Oktober 1844 in Röcken bei Lützen als Sohn eines Pastors geboren. Er studierte in Bonn und Leipzig zunächst Sprachwissenschaften und evangelische Theologie, seinen Abschluß machte er jedoch nur in klassischer Philologie. 1868 lernte er Richard Wagner kennen, der sein Denken neben Schopenhauer stark beeinflußte. Einige Jahre später zerbrach die Freundschaft über Nietzsches Geringschätzung der Bayreuther Festspiele. 1869 wurde er auf eine Professur für Altphilologie nach Basel berufen, die er aus gesundheitlichen Gründen zehn Jahre später wieder aufgab. Fortan lebte er von seiner Pension und finanzierte davon viele Reisen, u.a. in die Schweiz und nach Italien, auf denen seine wichtigsten philosophischen Werke entstanden. In seinen Hauptwerken sagte Nietzsche den Tod Gottes voraus, beschrieb den Übermenschen, trat für die Umwertung aller Werte ein und prägte somit den Nihilismus. Zu seinen bekanntesten Werken zählen Also sprach Zarathustra (1883) und Ecce Homo (1908). In den 1880er Jahren nahmen seine körperlichen und seelischen Leiden zu und gipfelten 1889 in einem Zusammenbruch, von dem er sich nicht mehr erholte. Bis zu seinem Tod am 25. August 1900 in Weimar wurde er von seiner Mutter und seiner Schwester gepflegt. Dieter Borchmeyer, geboren 1941, ist Professor emeritus an der Universität Heidelberg, war Präsident der Bayerischen Akademie der Schönen Künste und lehrt im Rahmen der Stiftungsdozentur »Heidelberger Vorträge zur Kulturtheorie« weiterhin an der Universität Heidelberg. Borchmeyers Arbeitsfeld ist vor allem die deutsche Literatur vom 18. bis 20. Jahrhundert und das Musiktheater mit Monographien zu Goethe, Schiller, Mozart, Wagner und Nietzsche. Zuletzt erschien von ihm Was ist deutsch? (2017). Die geschenkte Zeit

        Über das Warten

        by Andrea Köhler

        In unendlich vielen Formen sind wir dem Warten ausgeliefert: Man wartet auf andere, auf eine Antwort, auf den Richtigen, auf den Befund, auf eine Nachricht, auf das Ende der Schmerzen, auf die Sportergebnisse, auf das Ende des Regens, auf den nächsten Tag, auf die Geburt des Kindes ... Andrea Köhler beobachtet und beschreibt, welche Tücken, Glücksmomente oder Überraschungen in Situationen des Wartens, der Pause und der Langsamkeit stecken. Sie verschafft dem Warten einen Raum, der so viel reicher und weiter ist als der, den ihm die Notwendigkeit beimißt.

        Richard Brome

        Place and politics on the Caroline stage

        by Matthew Steggle, Paul Edmondson, Martin White

        Richard Brome was the leading comic playwright of 1630s London. Starting his career as a manservant to Ben Jonson, he wrote a string of highly successful comedies which were influential in British theatre long after Brome's own playwriting career was cut short by the closure of the theatres in 1642. This book offers the first full-length chronological account of Brome's life and works, drawing on a wide range of recently rediscovered manuscript sources. It traces the early hostility to Brome from those who wrote him off as a mere servant; his continuing struggles with plague closures, contract disputes and theatrical takeover bids; and his literary relationships with Jonson, Shakespeare and others. Each of the surviving plays is discussed in relation to its social and political context, and its sense of place. A final chapter reviews Brome's enduring stageworthiness into the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and the most recent Brome revivals. ;

        Quellen des Wissens

        Zum Begriff vernünftiger Erkenntnisfähigkeiten

        by Andrea Kern

        Wie soll man verstehen, daß jemand, der sich irren kann, gleichwohl etwas wissen kann? Dieses Problem, so die zentrale These dieses Buches, läßt sich nicht lösen, solange man an dem Dogma der Erkenntnistheorie festhält, wonach der Wissensbegriff eine analytische Einheit von Elementen bedeutet, deren Begriffe grundlegender sind als der Begriff des Wissens selbst. Andrea Kern entwirft einen alternativen Wissensbegriff, in dessen Zentrum ein anhand von Aristoteles, Kant und Wittgenstein systematisch entwickelter Begriff der vernünftigen Fähigkeit steht. Wird Wissen als ein Akt vernünftiger Erkenntnisfähigkeit in diesem Sinne verstanden, die ein denkendes Subjekt als solches besitzt, läßt sich auch erklären, wie man sich irren und doch etwas wissen kann.

        Richard Lester

        by Neil Sinyard, Brian McFarlane, Neil Sinyard

        Richard Lester is of the most significant yet misunderstood directors of the post-war era. Indelibly associated with the Beatles and the 'swinging Sixties' because of his direction of A Hard Day's Night and Help and his joyous sex comedy The Knack, Lester has tended to be categorised as a modish director whose heyday passed when that decade's optimism slid into disillusionment and violence. This book offers a critical appreciation and reappraisal of his work, arguing that it had much greater depth and variety than he has been given credit for. His versatility encompasses the Brechtian anti-heroics of How I Won the War; the surreal nuclear comedy of The Bed-Sitting Room and the swashbuckling adventure of The Musketeers films. He has even, in his instinctively iconoclastic manner, cut Superman down to size. The book should win new admirers for a director with a gift of making movies whose visual wit and imaginative imagery reveal an intelligent and enquiring scepticism about heroes and society. Including comments from Lester himself and illustrations from his own private collection, the book is a must for film scholars and enthusiasts alike. ;

        Photography and memory in Mexico

        Icons of Revolution

        by Andrea Noble

        Photography and memory in Mexico traces the 'life stories' of some of the famous photographic images made during the 1910 revolution, which have been repeatedly reproduced across a range of media in its aftermath. Which photographs have become icons of the revolution and why these particular images and not others? What is the relationship between photography and memory of the conflict? How do we construct a critical framework for addressing the issues raised by iconic photographs? Placing an emphasis on the life, afterlife and also the pre-life of those iconic photographs that haunt the post-revolutionary landscape, Andrea Noble approaches them as dynamic objects, where their rhetorical power is derived from a combination of their visual eloquence and their ability to coordinate patterns of identification with the memory of the revolution as a foundational event in Mexican history. Richly-illustrated, this book will be of interest to all those interested in photography, memory studies, and Mexican cultural history. ;

        Richard Wainwright, the Liberals and Liberal Democrats

        Unfinished business

        by Frances Babbage, Matt Cole

        Richard Wainwright, the Liberals and Liberal Democrats: Unfinished Business now available in paperback, offers new research on familiar themes involving loyalties of politics, faith and locality. Richard Wainwright was a Liberal MP for seventeen years during the Party's recovery, but his life tells us about much more than this. Wainwright grew up in prosperity, but learned from voluntary work about poverty; he refused to fight in World War Two, but saw war at its cruellest; he joined the Liberal Party when most had given up on it, but gave his fortune to it; lost a by-election but caused the only Labour loss in Harold Wilson's landslide of 1966. He then played a key role in the fall of Jeremy Thorpe, the Lib-Lab Pact and the formation of the SDP-Liberal Alliance and the Liberal Democrats; he represented a unique Yorkshire constituency which reflected his pride and hope for society; and though he gave his life to the battle to be in the Commons, he refused a seat in the Lords. Richard Wainwright's story is central to the story of the Liberal Party and sheds light on the reasons for its survival and the state of its prospects. At the same time this book is a parable of politics for anyone who wants to represent an apparently lost cause, who wants to motivate people who have been neglected, and who wants to follow their convictions at the highest level. ;
