Die Französische Revolution hat zum ersten Mal praktisch, auch gewalttätig, gezeigt, daß die Menschheit sich als vernünftiges Gattungssubjekt konstituieren kann, das sich selber – mit dem Anspruch auf Universalität – die Grundverfassung der Menschen- und Bürgerrechte gibt. Die Revolution ist der handgreifliche Gründungsakt der »Moderne«. Jede Debatte über die Folgen der Französischen Revolution ist zugleich eine Verhandlung über die »Moderne« selber und umgekehrt. Ist das hochgemute Versprechen der Errichtung einer Welt »aus Vernunft«, die stets zum Besseren fortschreitet, eingelöst worden? Oder befindet sich das »Projekt Moderne« nicht noch immer im Projektstatus, rühren die aktuellen Übel nicht eher als vom revolutionären Fortschritt von der weitgehenden Abwesenheit der Revolutionswerte Freiheit, Gleichheit, gar Brüderlichkeit her? Das von den Autoren eingebrachte historische, philosophische, politologische, juristische, ökonomische, theologische und ästhetische Fachwissen ist geeignet, zentrale Probleme der Modernität in den für sie relevanten Zusammenhang zu rücken.

On 25 January 1474, Charles the Bold, duke of Burgundy, appeared before his subjects in Dijon. Robed in silk, gold and precious jewels and wearing a headpiece that gave the illusion of a crown, he made a speech in which he cryptically expressed his desire to become a king. Three years later, Charles was killed at the battle of Nancy, an event that plunged the Great Principality of Burgundy into chaos. This book, innovative and essential, not only explores Burgundian history and historiography but offers a complete synthesis about the nature of politics in this region, considered both from the north and the south. Focusing on political ideologies, a number of important issues are raised relating to the medieval state, the signification of the nation under the 'Ancien Regime', the role of warfare in the creation of political power and the impact of political loyalties in the exercise of government. In doing so, the book challenges a number of existing ideas about the Burgundian state.

Richtet sich Mayers Blick vom historisch Erfahrenen auch wieder nach vorn, fordert er die Fortsetzung von »ihren bürgerlichen und geschichtlichen Ursprüngen abgelöster« Aufklärung als der »permanenten Revolution«, so doch in erklärter Gegenstellung zu einem abstrakt bemühten Utopismus allgemein-gesellschaftlicher Emphase, in der Hinwendung zum letztlich maßgebenden Bedürfnis und Anspruch des Einzelnen.– Das Buch entwickelt seine Problematik beispielhaft und zentral an der Stellung bürgerlicher Gesellschaft und ihrer Literatur zur Frau, zu gleichgeschlechtlicher Liebe und Judentum. Es gelingt ihm deren darstellerische Bewältigung aus stupender Belesenheit und in methodischer Schmiegsamkeit.

Dabei stellt sich ihm diese Gesellschaft als das Endstadium eines Verfallsprozesses dar, den die Politik keinesfalls aufhalten könne, aber zu verlangsamen habe. Das Paradox, daß ein in bezug auf die sozioökonomischen Verhältnisse konservativer Autor revolutionär wirkte, wird vor allem in dem erheblich erweiterten Kapitel »Rousseau und die Französische Revolution« diskutiert.

Local government today provides a comprehensive analysis of the structure, finance, management and democratic framework for local government in Britain. This new edition has been substantially rewritten to encompass the many changes to the structure and function of the system since 2000, including developments flowing from the 2007 Local Government Act. The study discusses how, during the Blair years, local governments came to be seen once again as centrally important institutions within Britain's political system. However, they are not seen as organisations that can function as separate agencies, undertaking all their duties 'in-house'. They are now required to work in partnership with the private, public and voluntary sectors to deliver local services and represent local interests. It is further argued that, for the first time in over a century, the barriers between civil servants and senior local government officers are being eroded as central government begins to incorporate leading local government officials into its decision-making processes. Neoliberal precarity, generational dispossession and call centre labour in Portugal

Since the mid-2000s, the harsh reality of call centre employment for a generation of young workers in Portugal has been impossible to ignore. With its endless rows of small cubicles, where human agents endure repetitive telephone conversations with abusive clients under invasive modes of technological surveillance, discipline and control, call centre work remains a striking symbol of labour precarity, a condition particularly associated with the neoliberal generational disenchantment that 'each generation does better than its predecessor'. This book describes the emergence of a regime of disciplined agency in the Portuguese call centre sector. Examining the ascendancy of call centres as icons of precarity in contemporary Portugal, this book argues that call centre labour constitutes a new form of commodification of the labouring subject. De Matos argues that call centres represent an advanced system of non-manual labour power exploitation, due to the underestimation of human creativity that lies at the centre of the regimented structures of call centre labour. Call centres can only guarantee profit maintenance, de Matos argues, through the commodification of the human agency arising from the operators' moral, relational and social embedded agentive linguistic interventions of creative improvisation, decision-making, problem-solving and ethical evaluation.
