La increíble historia de la Capoeira / Mestre Ricardo Cachorro La capoeira, una disciplina original afrobrasileña, es bastante difícil de definir dadas sus múltiples facetas, como arte marcial mortal y danza exótica, que se inspira en una antigua cultura remota. Casi cuatrocientos años de trata de esclavos han legado a Brasil un patrimonio cultural envidiable, basado en una afluencia continua de diversos grupos étnicos que, en combinación con las distintas expresiones regionales autóctonas, africanas y europeas y sus constantes cambios geopolíticos, ha producido una única, colorida y vibrante sociedad multicultural y multiétnica inmersa en su nueva identidad brasileña. Del siglo XVIII al XIX, las duras condiciones a las que fueron sometidos los esclavos negros llevaron a una creciente ola de revueltas de esclavos en las Américas, donde los fugitivos formaron comunidades cimarronas independientes en las Antillas francesas, españolas, británicas y holandesas, así como las comunidades quilombolas en Brasil y emprendieron guerras de guerrillas contra los amos y dueños de plantaciones, dando lugar a campañas contra la esclavitud en Europa y a la abolición de la esclavitud en las Américas. La capoeira fue el resultado de la experiencia diaspórica propia de Brasil, una rama de un gran árbol que creció hasta convertirse en un arte social único y complejo, que no se puede disociar de su perspectiva histórica y antropológica. La increíble historia de la Capoeira, escrita por el experto brasileño en capoeira Ricardo Mestre Cachorro, da a conocer la Era de la exploración y la trata de esclavos resultante y presenta la esclavitud africana ya en el siglo XV, mucho antes de que los esclavos negros fueran llevados al Nuevo Mundo. La fascinante saga de la familia Akindele, del hermoso reino yoruba de Adágún Lwá, le llevará al seno del África precolonial y a las tierras de la recién explorada Bahía de Todos los Santos en 1531, donde comenzó la historia casi sagrada de la capoeira. De los nuevos hallazgos en África a los descubrimientos en Brasil, este libro cautivante navega a través de las feitorías y capitanías —los molinos de caña del siglo 17— la verdadera y casi desconocida cuna de la capoeira. Saca a luz hermosos aspectos históricos y culturales de los períodos coloniales, con sus artes, su música y su religión, el crisol africano que se formó de la fusión de las antiguas culturas de África y de los nuevos escenarios rurales y urbanos afrobrasileños y, por último, los antiguos y los modernos creadores de la capoeira. Neste terceiro volume da Colectânea de Contos Traduzidos pelos vencedores do Concurso de Tradução Literária, apresentamos seis contos publicados entre 2017 e 2019 no âmbito do Caine Prize for African Writing e da colectânea New Short Fiction from Africa: ‘Involução’ da autoria da sul-africana Stacy Hardy que aborda abertamente a sexualidade da mulher, também preocupações sociais e políticas, faz alusão a questões como a degradação ambiental, o colonialismo e direitos da mulher, ancorados numa teatralidade conceptual necessária para que o conto não se torne efémero e engaje o sentido de humor do leitor para o aproximar da mente aberta de Hardy. ‘A heroína misteriosa’ ou ‘Mavbanelo na mayi’ em Bitonga, é da autoria da Tanzaniana Lydia Kasese. Ela escreve sobre as expectativas e pressões sociais que levam as mulheres a desejarem concertar tudo. Neste conto Kasese traz destramente à luz questões sobre o abuso de menores e o seu impacto sobre as famílias na Tanzânia e, não só. Alinafe Malonje estreou-se nesta colectânea da Short Story Day com o conto ‘Manutenção de Rotina’, um registo metafísico de um hotel: parte alegoria, parte meditação com um subtil comentário sobre o que significa ser mulher no Malawi. Natasha Omokhodion-Kalulu Banda cria um fabuloso hotel de fantasia que contém realidades sinistras, construindo um persuasivo mundo alternativo. Tariro Ndoro em ‘A lenda das duas irmãs’, ou ‘Xihitana xa vamakwavu na makwavu’ em Changana, traz uma abordagem arrepiante dos perigos da saudade, onde a busca por uma irmã num hotel de luxo em Victoria Falls tem um fim fantasmagórico. Mampianina Randria nos apresenta em ‘O Gatilho’, ou ‘Niyódeké sê xidúvúlá’ em Changana, um conto com um ritmo cerrado e um desfecho totalmente inesperado onde uma mulher que lida com as frustrações de quem entra na vida adulta.

Peace Initiatives in Colombia

Nearly half-a-century old, the Colombian conflict has spawned a long tradition of peace initiatives that offer innovative alternatives to violence. Peace Initiatives in Colombia, a conference sponsored by the United States Institute of Peace and the Latin American Studies Program at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, November 19–20, 2005, analyzed these initiatives from various perspectives and identified the variables and strategies relevant to their success. The conference brought together contributors to a book on Colombian peace initiatives being edited by Virginia M. Bouvier, a Latin American specialist and senior program officer of the Jennings Randolph Program at the U.S. Institute of Peace. Conference speakers included some twenty individuals from a broad range of academic fields, as well as human rights and development specialists, photographers, and political and military analysts from Colombia, the United States, and Europe. A list of conference participants, about half of whom are current or former USIP grantees or peace scholars, is at the end of this report. The conference was organized by Dr. Bouvier and Dr. Mary Roldán. Additional sponsors included Cornell’s Africana Studies and Research Center; its departments of development sociology, government, history, and anthropology; the Mario Einaudi Center for International Studies; the Institute for European Studies; the Johnson School of Management; the Peace Studies Program; the Society for the Humanities; the Committee on U.S.–Latin American Relations (CUSLAR); and the Colombian Student Association, as well as Syracuse University ’s Program for Analysis and Resolution of Conflict (PARC). This report is based primarily on presentations and papers prepared for the conference, and participants have reviewed it.

The three boys are eleven years old. They are searching for each other, they need to find each other.
