The Arts2019Volunteers. Age of Heroes

Andrii Kotliarchuk's war history photo project tells the story of the ongoing war in the East of Ukraine and is dedicated to volunteers and anti-terrorist operation veterans. The project unfolded between 2014 and 2018 and the photographs were taken at the ground-zero frontline. The album includes non-random photographs taken in the square frame on black-and-white wide film. The photographer travelled hundreds of kilometres along the contact line, took hundreds of thoughtful shots, and made hundreds of portraits of servicemen before and after battles. The photographs are accompanied by the opinions of contemporaries of the events, their recollections, and observations. The photo project is not accidental, it was thoroughly planned by the author from the very beginning. The first part of the photo project was exhibited in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, as well as demonstrated in museums all over the country. It was also shown at the National Art Museum of Georgia. The publication reproduces a large array of photos through which we can see how the strength of the Ukrainian army was gradually revived. The pictures were shot in the same style and this artistic approach brings up associations with the battle-scene paintings of the past. The book also includes many images of genre scenes, landscapes and still lifes. Is it possible to find aesthetics in a war? Should the photography depict the heart-breaking moments of military confrontation? Is it possible to combine documentary photography with artistic vision? Andrii Kotliarchuk's project "Volunteers. Age of Heroes" is an attempt to answer these questions.

Who are we? This is the question that the Ukraїner team has been working on every day for over five years. We tell stories from different parts of Ukraine, and in this way we seek the answer. This book has grown out of a great desire to explore and tell about the people in Ukraine. First of all, it is about the indigenous peoples here, because since July 2021, in addition to Ukrainians, this list has officially included the Crimean Tatars, Krymchaks and Karaites. And also it is about a whole range of national minorities whose representatives appeared on our lands for one reason or another. After all, the history of each people living in the territory of Ukraine is a part of our common history, as ancient and rooted as the formation of the Crimean Tatar people in Crimea and nearby steppe of Prychornomoria, or as fresh as the newly Indian student community in Zakarpattia. With the story of the latter, in 2017 Ukraїner began a series of more than 30 multimedia stories about national minorities of Ukraine, fragments of which became the basis for this book. Most stories are accompanied by QR codes with links, which you can follow to watch the stories. We also set out to tell about the diversity of cultures and thereby answer the question: what are we? The deeper we researched the traditional holidays, cuisine, and symbols of each separate people, the more we found in common.

Fields, forests, coasts, snow-capped mountains, patterns of city streets – all these shots show amazing diversity and cause aesthetic awe. Despite the fact that enemy shells are still flying in the Ukrainian sky, we are already trying to make the whole world fall in love with it. The book is published only in English and is called “Ukraine from above”.

This is the third book in a series of conversations between Iza Khruslinska and Ukrainian intellectuals. The first two books were with Oksana Zabuzhko and Yosyf Zisels. The one with Yaroslav Hrytsak, although, is chronologically the first book. It was first published in Polish language in 2009. The main topic of the conversation with Yaroslav Hrytsak is the suitability of history for understanding what is going on in Ukraine in recent decades. Special emphasis is placed on Ukraine's relations with its historical neighbors – Poles and Russians, as well as Ukrainian-Jewish relations. But first of all, it is about the historical dimension of the current problems and challenges that Ukraine is facing - and to what extent knowledge of history makes it possible to understand future development scenarios. Since the Polish edition was published almost ten years ago, many things in this book have been rethought and rewritten, in particular, a new chapter has appeared on the development of events over the most recent decade.

The Western understanding of what happened in Ukraine during World War II has been shaped by historical and ideological narratives created by the Kremlin. The Ukrainian version of the story has been dissolved in the concept of the “great victorious Russian people” and distorted by attempts to equate Ukrainian national army to German Nazis, while the occupation and colonisation of Ukraine by Russian Bolsheviks in the 1920s and 1930s has widely been ignored or artificially silenced. In her Four Essays on World War II, Olena Stiazhkina inscribes the Ukrainian history of the war into a wider European and world context. Amongst other aspects, she analyzes the mobilization measures on the eve of the war, thus questioning Soviet narratives. Scrutinising the social and political processes initiated by the Bolshevik leadership in the 1920s and 1930s, Stiazhkina concludes that mobilisation and militarisation were integral parts of Soviet power policy. The Soviet and contemporary Russian narratives about World War II have been used to justify the Kremlin’s policies towards democratic countries. Today, Russia remains deeply engaged in the falsification of the past, which underpins the claims of the so-called “Russian World” and the ongoing war against Ukraine. Olena Stiazhkina’s book promotes a new, historically adequate understanding of what happened in Ukraine before, during, and after World War II.
