        South African economy and policy, 1990-2000

        An economy in transition

        by Stuart Jones, Robert W. Vivian

        The 1990s were the decade of transition from white rule to black rule in South Africa. In the political sphere the transition was dramatic. In the economic sphere less so, yet the effects were and are likely to be far more far reaching. It is the economic impacts which are likely to determine the future of the country. With the exception of the diamond-rich Botswana, all the countries of Africa which underwent the transition from white to black rule experienced economic decline. Is this to be the fate of South Africa? How was and is South Africa's historical role as the world's leading gold producer affected by the transition? Why did some economic policies succeed and others fail? This book, by leading authorities in the field, attempts to answer these and other related questions. ;

        Am Felsfenster morgens

        (und andere Ortszeiten 1982-1987)

        by Peter Handke

        Mit Am Felsfenster morgens liegt eine weitere Journalabschrift Peter Handkes vor. »Es handelt sich«, so der Autor im Vorwort, »vor allem, um Notizen, Wahrnehmungen, Bedenklichkeiten, Fragen, aus einer Zeit der Seßhaftigkeit und des Wohnens in meinem Geburts- und Heimatland, bestimmt durch Tun und auch gehörig viel Nichtstun.« Im Gegensatz zu früheren Journalabschriften ist diese »spezialisiert auf den Ort, den großen, und dessen kleine und kleinere Zweigstellen, wo die Augenblicke usw. stattfanden und Gestalt annahmen (…) Sollte ich die Eigenheit des Ganzen hier andeuten, so vielleicht folgend: Maximen und Reflexionen? nein, eher Reflexe; Reflexe, unwillkürliche, gleichwohl bedachtsame; Reflexe, die aus einer Bedachtsamkeit kommen, einer grundsätzlichen, und in deren Folge hin und wieder ausschwingen, auch ausschwingen wollen, über den bloßen Reflex hinaus, soweit der Atem reicht.« Vor zwanzig Jahren schrieb DER SPIEGEL nach dem Erscheinen über Am Felsfenster morgens: »Überraschend bleibt am Ende, wie frisch sich diese Notizen aus der Zeit vor der Wende von 1989/1990 lesen. Offenbar erweist sich in Zeiten des Umbruchs und einer ungewissen Zukunft gerade die Skizze als das Stabile, das Tragende.« – Eine Einschätzung, aktueller denn je.

        Tears of laughter

        Comedy-drama in 1990s British cinema

        by Nigel Mather

        'Tears of laughter' examines the interactions of comedy and drama in three vital thematic strands of British cinema during the 1990s: comedies exploring issues of class, culture and community in British society, 'ethnic' comedy-dramas engaging with complex issues of identity and allegiance in modern Britain, and romantic comedies featuring characters searching (somewhat desperately or frantically) for a suitable and desirable long-term or short-term partner. Films to be discussed in detail include 'Brassed Off' (1996), 'The Full Monty' (1997), 'East is East' (1999), 'Four Weddings and a Funeral' (1994), 'Notting Hill' (1999) and a post-1990s romantic comedy, 'Love Actually' (2003). The study discusses these specific films and a range of other 1990s British comedy-drama films within the context of community-orientated Ealing comedy classics, contentious situation comedies treating race relations as both a laughing matter and a site of conflict ('Till Death Us Do Part' and 'Love Thy Neighbour'), and romantic comedies set and produced in Britain. It is aimed at film studies academics, students and film enthusiasts. ;

        Hong Kong and British culture, 1945–97

        by Mark Hampton. Series edited by Andrew S. Thompson, John Mackenzie

        This book examines the British cultural engagement with Hong Kong in the second half of the twentieth century. It shows how the territory fit unusually within Britain's decolonisation narratives and served as an occasional foil for examining Britain's own culture during a period of perceived stagnation and decline. Drawing on a wide range of archival and published primary sources, Hong Kong and British culture, 1945-97 investigates such themes as Hong Kong as a site of unrestrained capitalism, modernisation, and good government, as well as an arena of male social and sexual opportunity. It also examines the ways in which Hong Kong Chinese embraced British culture, and the competing predictions that British observers made concerning the colony's return to Chinese sovereignty. An epilogue considers the enduring legacy of British colonialism.

        Marcel Reich-Ranicki antwortet auf 99 Fragen

        by Marcel Reich-Ranicki, Volker Weidermann, Hans-Joachim Simm

        Die Rubrik der Frankfurter Allgemeinen Sonntagszeitung "Fragen Sie Reich-Ranicki" ist längst eine Institution geworden. Mit Spannung werden die Fragen und mehr noch die Antworten erwartet, und natürlich betreffen sie die Literatur: "Was halten Sie von der russischen Literatur des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts?" - "Sollen wir von unseren Schriftstellern verlangen, daß sie ihre Ansichten zu aktuellen politischen Fragen öffentlich verkünden?" - "Was hätten Sie Thomas Mann gern gefragt?" Die vorliegende Sammlung der 99 interessantesten Fragen an Marcel Reich-Ranicki und seiner Antworten darf durchaus eine kleine Literaturgeschichte und ein demoskopischer Spiegel des literarischen Lebens genannt werden, und sie zeigt eines gewiß: Die Begeisterung für Literatur ist - allen Bedenken zum Trotz - nicht nur auf der Seite des Antwortenden unvermindert groß.

        East German intelligence and Ireland, 1949–90

        Espionage, terrorism and diplomacy

        by Jerome de Wiel

        This book is an in-depth examination of the relations between Ireland and the former East Germany between the end of the Second World War and the fall of the Berlin Wall. It explores political, diplomatic, economic, media and cultural issues. The long and tortuous process of establishing diplomatic relations is unique in the annals of diplomatic history. Central in this study are the activities of the Stasi. They show how and where East German intelligence obtained information on Ireland and Northern Ireland and also what kind of information was gathered. A particularly interesting aspect of the book is the monitoring of the activities of the Irish Republican Army and the Irish National Liberation Army and their campaigns against the British army in West Germany. The Stasi had infiltrated West German security services and knew about Irish suspects and their contacts with West German terrorist groups. East German Intelligence and Ireland, 1949-90 makes an original contribution to diplomatic, intelligence, terrorist and Cold War studies. ;

        Germany, pacifism and peace enforcement

        by Anja Dalgaard-Nielsen, Emil Kirchner, Thomas Christiansen

        Germany, pacifism and peace enforcement is about the transformation of Germany's security and defence policy in the time between the 1991 Gulf War and the 2003 war against Iraq. The book traces and explains the reaction of Europe's biggest and potentially most powerful country to the ethnic wars of the 1990s, the emergence of large-scale terrorism, and the new US emphasis on pre-emptive strikes. Based on an analysis of Germany's strategic culture it portrays Germany as a security actor and indicates the conditions and limits of the new German willingness to participate in international military crisis management that developed over the 1990s. It debates the implications of Germany's transformation for Germany's partners and neighbours and explains why Germany said 'yes' to the war in Afghanistan, but 'no' to the Iraq War. ;

        Tony Garnett

        by Stephen Lacey, Jonathan Bignell, Sarah Cardwell, Steven Peacock

        Tony Garnett is the first book-length study of one of the most respected and prolific producers working in British television. From ground-breaking dramas from the 1960s such as Up the Junction and Cathy Come Home to the 'must see' series in the 1990s and 2000s such as This Life and The Cops, Garnett has produced some of the most important and influential British television drama. This book charts Garnett's career from his early days as an actor to his position as executive producer and head of World Productions. Drawing on personal interviews, archival research, contextual analysis and selected case studies, Tony Garnett examines the ways in which Garnett has helped to define the role of the producer in British television drama. Arguing that Garnett was both a key creative and political influence on the work he produced and an enabler of the work of others, the book traces his often combative relationships with broadcasting institutions (especially the BBC). Additionally, the study discusses the films he made for the cinema and considers some of the ways in which Garnett's experiments in film technology – 16 mm in the 1960s, digital video in the 1990s – have shaped his creative output. Tony Garnett will be of interest to all levels of researchers and students of British television drama, media and film. ;

        Claude Simon

        Adventures in Words

        by Alastair B. Duncan

        Introducing novels by the Nobel Prize for Literature author, Claude Simon, this text gives emphasis to peaks in his literary achievement: "The Flanders Road" (1960), "The Georgics" (1981) and "The Acacia" (1989). Alastair Duncan traces the development and recurrence of major themes, such as war, time and memory, and the constantly renewed inventiveness of Simon's manner. Duncan illustrates and comments on the various critical approaches which have been made to the novels over the years, from phenomenological interpretations, through structuralism to the autobiographical and psychobiographical approaches of the 1980s and 1990s. The text includes a chapter on Simon's most recent works ("Le Jardin des Plantes" 1997 and "Le Tramway" 2001).
