The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the global tourism industry were unprecedented. International travel fell by 72% in 2020, the worst year on record for tourism. Tourism operations, from family businesses to national tourism organizations all faced potential economic ruin. They had to adapt their business practices and adopt new ways of operating, in order to work around ever-changing restrictions. This book is comprised of chapters and case studies previously published by CABI, that deal with the impacts of, and responses to, the COVID-19 pandemic, along with specially written introductory and concluding chapters that provide context. It provides invaluable snapshots of reactions to the pandemic from individuals and organizations involved in a variety of forms of tourism. Many authors have included postscripts, to record or update their views following the end of the pandemic. Key themes and issues addressed include: anticipation of and preparedness for the pandemic, the scale of the problem, the adjustments made during the pandemic, likely future directions of change and the implications for sustainability. Knowing COVID-19 demonstrates how researchers in the humanities shone a light on some of the many hidden problems of COVID-19, in the very depths of the pandemic crisis. In December of 2019, the first reports came from Wuhan, China of a new respiratory infection that was causing serious illness. Dies geschieht im Sinne einer Beschreibung sogenannter »Praktiken der Verantwortung«. Anhand der genauen Rekonstruktion eines Perspektivenwandels auf den »Arbeitsunfall« zeigt Ewald, wie die Kategorie des Risikos zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts zu einer politischen wird. Dieser Wandel hat schließlich die Gründung einer Reihe von Versicherungen und Versicherungsanstalten zur Folge. Diese Veränderungen sind bisher immer als Geburt des Wohlfahrtsstaates beschrieben worden. Ewald zeigt dagegen, daß es sinnvoll ist, sie unter dem Begriff des »Vorsorgestaates« zu fassen. Die Analyse, die von Ewald hier vorgeführt wird, wirft ein vollkommen neues Licht auf philosophische wie auch rechtssoziologische Themen und Methoden – und das alles unter Foucaultscher Perspektive. Die Ausarbeitung des Modells eines Vorsorgestaates muß deswegen als Manifest einer neuen Rechtsphilosophie gelesen werden.

Allmählich muß das Selbstverständliche unselbstverständlich geworden sein. Wie geschah das? Offenbar im Verlauf einer Geschichte, von der die zünftigen Historiker wenig wissen, desto mehr aber die Dichter als die Historiographen der Schicksale der ›Seele‹. Der Zeitpunkt ist fast genau datierbar: Um die Wende vom 18. zum 19. Jahrhundert beginnen verschiedene Schriftsteller, die man dem Epochenbegriff der ›Romantik‹ zuordnet, auf jeweils ganz verschiedene Weise damit, uns eine Geschichte zu erzählen, die gleichwohl immer das eine Thema hat: den Tod des alten christlich-abendländischen Herzens; seine Erstarrung; seine Entwertung; seine Ersetzung durch das unorganische Ding oder die Maschine. Eine große Rolle spielt das Geld. Es ist nicht nur der allgegenwärtige Mittler der Herz-Stein-Tauschoperation, von denen berichtet wird. Ähnlich ergeht es dem menschlichen Auge, welches seit alters als das Einfallstor der Seele gilt: durch das mechanische Artefakt eines »Perspektivs« ersetzt, wird es blind für das Beseelte und entdeckt seine Faszination für das Seelenlose, für Automat, Maschine und den Glanz des Geldkristalls.
