Freundschaft mit Johann Gottfried Herder. 1799 Ernennung zum Herzoglichen Legationsrat. 1800 Übersiedlung nach Berlin. 1801 Heirat mit Karoline Mayer, mit der er bis 1803 in Meiningen lebte. Ab 1804 ständiger Wohnort in Bayreuth. 1824 Erblindung.

Exploring the Explorers: Spaniards in Oceania 1519-1794 is the first study of cross-cultural engagements between the indigenous peoples of the Pacific and Spanish explorers during the early modern period. Bridging disciplines, the book sets out to analyse in detail eight main voyages and their aims and outcomes, looking at the different patterns of contact and the use of gift-giving and bartering as social cement. This fascinating and original study will broaden the investigation of world exploration and Pacific ethnography, as many of the sources from these voyages are scarcely known and have not been translated before. It will also expand an understanding of Spanish and world exploration, developing the history of the Spanish Pacific beyond the long-standing colony of the Philippines. The study will be of particular interest to scholars and students of Early Modern European history as well as anthropologists, ethnographers and those interested in stories of exploration and discovery throughout history. ;

The second volume "History of Civilisation. Ukraine” is dedicated to the period from Kyivan Rus to the Galician Principality (end of the 10th century - 1256). The content of the book is designed to highlight the most important aspects of the historical and cultural process that took place in the lands of modern Ukraine at that time. Leading specialists in the field of medieval history and archeology, as well as young researchers were involved in the creation of the book. Due to this, the book combines theoretical backbone that is basic for the domestic historical science and the results of innovative research, that is presented for the first time in such a popular way. Information on history, economics, language, religion, culture (literature and musical arts, architecture), life (clothing, games and entertainment, etc.) and military affairs of the medieval population of modern Ukraine are collected under one cover. The chief editor of this publication is an archaeologist, Candidate of Historical Sciences of Ukraine (PhD) Olena Chernenko, who has been researching archeological monuments and the history of Ukraine in the Middle Ages for more than thirty years. The Necessity, Existence, and Limits of an Infallible Church

The Benedictine Beda Mayr,OSB, (1742–1794) was one of the main figures of the German Catholic Enlightenment. He was not only the first Catholic to wrestle with the challenges of Reimarus and Lessing, but also the first to develop an ecumenical methodology for a reunion of the churches. The text, translated from the German original for the first time, presents a theologian who intentionally went to the margins of orthodoxy in order to allow for more interconfessional dialogue. Mayr argued that Catholic theology should follow minority opinions for unsettled dogmatic questions, which would allow for easier union agreements with Protestant churches. Moreover, he suggested limiting ecclesial infallibility to directly revealed truths, thereby reducing the authoritative truth claims of conciliar or papal decisions. Although the study of Catholic Enlightenment is booming among historians and theologians, too few texts are available in reliable translations. A major strength of this edition is not only that its introduction introduces the reader to the colorful landscape of eighteenth-century theological discussions, but also presents the entire text of Mayr's book (with the exception of its appendix) thereby allowing the reader to see the strengths and weaknesses of Enlightenment ecumenism. Mayr's Limited Infallibility was put on the Index of Forbidden Books, on which it remained until the 20th Century. It invites readers to a modern, non-scholastic way of theologizing for the sake of Christian unity.

The Genius of "On Crimes and Punishments"

In eighteenth century continental Europe penal Law was barbaric. Gallows were a regular feature of the landscape, branding and mutilation common and there existed the ghastly spectacle of men being broken on the wheel. To make matters worse, people were often tortured or put to death (sometimes both) for minor crimes and often without any trial at all. Like a bombshell a book entitled On Crimes and Punishments exploded onto the scene in 1764 with shattering effect. Its author was a young nobleman named Cesare Beccaria (1738-1794). A central message of that—now classic—work was that such punishments belonged to ‘a war of nations against their citizens’ and should be abolished. It was a cri de coeur for thorough reform of the Law affecting punishments and it swept across the continent of Europe like wildfire, being adopted by one ruler after another. It even crossed the Atlantic to the new United States of America into the hands of President Thomas Jefferson. In a wonderful sentence which concludes Beccaria’s book, he sums up matters as follows: “ In order that every punishment may not be an act of violence, committed by one man or by many against a single individual, it ought to be above all things public, speedy, necessary, the least possible in the given circumstances, proportioned to its crime (and) dictated by the Laws.” Civilising penal Law remains a topical issue but it began with Cesare Beccaria.
