        Überrascht blicken wir auf das Werk eines jungen Autors des sechzehnten Jahrhunderts, den die englische Literaturgeschichte nicht kennt oder als Marginalie behandelt. Seine Gedichte besitzen Strahlkraft, Intelligenz und Entschiedenheit. Der Dichter – Edward de Vere, Earl of Oxford (1550–1604) – verbirgt seinen Namen von Anfang an hinter dem Schleier diverser Pseudonyme: Meritum petere grave, Fortunatus Infoelix, Ferenda Natura, Spraeta tamen vivunt, My lucke is losse, Phaeton. Ab 1593 (im Herbst dieses Jahres erscheint unter dem Namen William Shakespeare ein Versepos, »Venus and Adonis«) ist es dann nur noch eines: William Shakespeare. Diese hundert Gedichte eines rollenkundigen Spötters und sprachspielverliebten Dialektikers, die fast ausnahmslos um das Mit- und Gegeneinander von Liebe und Zurückweisung, Sehnsucht und Widerwillen, Leidenschaft und Bezähmung kreisen, sind eine Neuerscheinung in der Welt der Literatur. Sie gewinnen ihren Wert nicht durch die Zuschreibung an William Shakespeare. Umgekehrt: Ihre Qualität stützt die These, dass Edward de Vere ab 1593 unter dem Pseudonym William Shakespeare publizierte.

        Als Buch im Buch, versteckt in einer anonym publizierten literarischen Anthologie des Jahres 1573, erschien die erste englische Novelle, The Adventures of Master F. I., deren virtuose Dialoge zwischen Verspieltheit und Strenge, höfischem Frost und seelischem Fieber oszillieren. Im Raffinement der Darstellung, in der virtuosen Beiläufigkeit und poetischen Dichte sind die Aventiuren unvergleichlich. Das bald vom Markt verschwundene Buch erschien zwei Jahre später in »gereinigter« Version unter dem Namen des Soldatendichters George Gascoigne. In der historisch-philologischen Analyse des Nachworts entwickelt Kurt Kreiler eine Indizienkette, die auf die Autorschaft eines großen anderen schließen läßt. Danach heißt der Verfasser der Aventiuren Edward de Vere, Earl of Oxford (1550 bis 1604), der von seinen Zeitgenossen als der »Beste im Fach Komödie« gerühmt wurde und in unserer Zeit als Anwärter auf die Autorschaft Shakespeares gilt. Der Übersetzung wurde die erste Ausgabe von 1573 zugrunde gelegt. Fortunatus Infoelix, ein galanter Ritter des 16. Jahrhunderts, weilt zu Gast in einem Schloß und verliebt sich in die Schwiegertochter des Hausherrn. Lady Elynor reizt den amourösen Belagerer durch die Doppeldeutigkeit ihres Widerstands. Die Zeremonien der Liebesverschwörung werden jäh unterbrochen, als eine zweite Frau den glücklichen Unglücklichen zum Tanz verführt. Wenn sie sich anderntags Master Infoelix als verständnisvolle Freundin andient, so nur deshalb, um sein »Liebesexperiment« geschickt zu steuern …

        Die Sikh-Religion (vom sanskritischen Wort für „Schüler, Belehrungsbedürftiger”) ist eine im 15. Jahrhundert entstandene konfessions- und religionsübergreifende Form indischer Mystik, die auf den charismatischen Gemeindeführer Guru Nanak (1469-1539) und seine neun Nachfolger zurückgeht. (1708 wurde der letzte Guru, der keinen Nachfolger ernannt hat, Opfer eines Attentats.) Die Literatur des Sikhismus setzt mit den Liedern Guru Nanaks ein. Nach dessen Tod begannen seine Nachfolger mit der Traditionsbildung: Nichtauthentische Lieder wurden ausgesondert, das zunächst mündlich tradierte Liedgut verschriftlicht. Diese Entwicklung mündete 1604 in das Guru Granth Sahib (auch bekannt unter dem Namen „Adi Granth”), das „Ursprüngliche Buch” oder genauer: der „Lehrer Hoher Herr Buch”, eine kanonische Liedsammlung, die heute in jedem Sikh-Heiligtum im Zentrum der Liturgie steht. Die Sikhs sind in der Gegenwart eine kleine (23 Millionen Anhänger), aber wirtschaftlich erfolgreiche Minderheit in Indien. Ihr prominentester Vertreter ist der amtierende indische Premierminister. Die Gurus sprechen in ihren Versen über eine grundsätzliche menschliche Haltung dem Leben gegenüber, die durchdrungen ist von Nächstenliebe, Hingabe und Aufrichtigkeit. Die Lehren legen daher großen Wert auf gegenseitigen Respekt. Im Abschlußgebet der Sikhs wird für das Wohl der gesamten Schöpfung gebetet. Dieser Gedanke drückt sich auch in den Gebetsstätten (Gurdwara) der Sikhs aus: Jeder Mensch, ungeachtet seiner Herkunft und Religion, ist eingeladen, an den Gottesdiensten und Veranstaltungen teilzunehmen. Bekanntester Einzeltext ist das „Mul-Mantar” oder „Wurzel-Mantra”, das quasi den Rang eines Glaubensbekenntnisses hat.

        This work, which aims be an approach to the plurality of our country, an overview of its natural resources, its men and women, of its vast cultural heritage, and the exciting course of its history, It has been structured in thirty-two chapters - one chapter per federal entity. In the section of tourist attractions they converge in a balanced way archaeological zones, museums, historical sites and monuments; crafts, dishes and traditional festivals; beaches, forests, deserts and other places of interest. Close each chapter, with the mention of the names of those who contributed to forging the destiny of each region. Finally, the selection of photographs deserves a special mention made mostly expressly for this edition, that while illustrating and enriching the text, help the reader to reconfigure the various faces of our country.

        The Many Faces of Ruan Dacheng: Poet, Playwright, Politician in Seventeenth-Century China is the first monograph in English on a controversial Ming dynasty literary figure. It examines and re-assesses the life and work of Ruan Dacheng (1587–1646), a poet, dramatist, and politician in the late Ming period. Ruan Dacheng was in his own time a highly regarded poet, but is best known as a dramatist, and his poetry is now largely unknown. He is most notorious as a ‘treacherous official’ of the Ming–Qing transition, and as a result his literary work—his plays as well as his poetry—has been neglected and undervalued. Hardie argues that Ruan’s literary work is of much greater significance in the history of Chinese literature than has generally been recognised since his own time. Ruan, rather than being a transgressive figure, is actually a very typical late Ming literatus, and as such his attitudes towards identity and authenticity can add to our understanding of these issues in late Ming intellectual history. These insights will impact on the cultural and intellectual history of late imperial China.
