Small Axe Books.
A dream. Our publisher exists for the purest desire to be here and do things our way: rocker and insubstantial, but also professionally and creatively. Yes, because more than "selling things", we want to add value and make every adventure worth embarking on, inaugurating a new style in Brazilian literature. They are frank and pretentious longings, it is true, but they are not asking anyone for permission to exist: they already are. Believe me, you didn't get here by chance ... so be welcome: take your seat and enjoy the trip! "If you are the big tree, we are the small axe, sharpened to cut you down, ready to cut you down" (Small Axe - music by Bob Marley)

Court and civic society in the Burgundian Low Countries c.1420–1530
by Andrew Brown, Graeme Small
This volume is the first ever attempt to unite and translate some of the key texts which informed Johan Huizinga's famous study of the Burgundian court, The Waning of the Middle Ages, a work which has never gone out of print. It combines these texts with sources that Huizinga did not consider, those that illuminate the wider civic world that the Burgundian court inhabited and the dynamic interaction between court and city. Through these sources, and an introduction offering new perspectives on recent historiography, the book tests whether Huizinga's controversial vision of the period still stands. Covering subjects including ceremonial events, such as the spectacles and gargantuan banquets that made the Burgundian dukes the talk of Europe, the workings of the court, and jousting, archery and rhetoric competitions, the book will appeal to students of late medieval and early modern Europe and to those with wider interests in court culture, ritual and ceremony.

Alfalfa and Relatives
Evolution and Classification of Medicago
by Ernest Small
Best known as an animal feed, Alfalfa Medicago sativa is one of the most important and widely produced livestock crops grown throughout the temperate world. "Alfalfa and Relatives: Evolution and Classification of Medicago" provides an in-depth introduction to the Medicago genus, exploring its evolution, breeding and adaptation. Not only are Alfalfa's agricultural and environmental benefits unsurpassed but, due to technological advances, this staple crop is now being developed as a source of human food extracts, pharmaceuticals, enzymes, industrial chemicals, and biofuels. Through this detailed text the authors define the ecological applications of the plant whilst carefully illustrating its economic value and its growing importance as a genetic resource.

Harnessing Dividends from Drylands
Innovative Scaling up with Soil Nutrients
by K V Raju, S P Wani
The livelihoods of millions of people in developing countries, which depend on dryland agriculture to ensure their food security and their well-being, could be improved measurably by gains in agricultural crop yields. This book describes lessons learnt from an innovative scheme in India that improved crop yields in drylands. It shows how the scheme can be scaled up for other dryland regions of the world. The scheme uses localized soil nutrient analyses to create an integrated, climate smart fertilizer and planting plan that maximises yields for farmers. This book describes how a partnership between a global scientific organization (such as International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics, ICRISAT) and state and non-state actors can provide a route to equitable growth, specifically for small and marginal farmers, and how this approach can be replicated worldwide to enhance rural livelihoods. This strategic collaboration and its conceptual and functional design is fully outlined, as well as the scheme's implementation and the effective monitoring and learning process that has been created. ; This book describes lessons learnt from an innovative scheme in India that improved yields in drylands. Invasive Alien Plants
Impacts on Development and Options for Management
by Carol A Ellison, Sean T Murphy, K V Sankaran
Invasive alien plants pose a major threat to agriculture and livelihoods worldwide. This book considers those impacts and options for biological control, through a case study of mikania weed, a neotropical invasive plant in many countries in the tropical humid forest zones of Southeast Asia. This perennial vine can smother agro-forestry and natural forest ecosystems, as well as many crops within homegarden and plantation production systems. The design of policy frameworks to combat invasive species is considered in depth, as is the use of classical biological control against mikania weed ; 1: Invasive alien plants as a constraint to development in tropical Asia: is there a crisis in the making?2: Profile of an invasive plant: Mikania micrantha3: Social and economic implications of Mikania micrantha in the Kerala Western Ghats4: Impacts and management options for Mikania micrantha in plantations5: Mikania micrantha: its status and impact on people and wildlife in Nepal6: Impact and management of invasive alien plants on Pacific island communities7: Understanding the impact of invasive Mikania micrantha in shifting agriculture and its management through traditional ecological knowledge8: Prevention and related measures for invasive alien plants in India; policy framework and other initiatives9: Control options for invasive alien plants in agroforestry10: Classical biological control of Mikania micrantha: the sustainable solution11: Policy frameworks for the implementation of a classical biological control strategy: the Chinese experience12: Policy frameworks for the implementation of a classical biological control strategy: the Indian experience

Small Animal Veterinary Psychiatry
by Sagi Denenberg, Ali Thompson
Problem behaviours are often the result of how an animal thinks and feels, genetics, and environmental influences. Steering away from just description diagnoses and focusing instead on emotional and cognitive causes, this book provides a practical approach to diagnosing, treating, and managing behaviour pathologies in dogs and cats. Beginning by addressing cases in the first opinion practice, this book then considers physical disorders that may lead to or exacerbate abnormal behavior. From there, the focus shifts to mental and emotional health, from an assessment of normal behavior and giving juveniles an optimal start in life, to diagnosing mental and emotional disorders, addressing emotions such as anxiety and frustration, and how to manage these issues - by modifying behavior, managing the animal's environment, training, and, when necessary, the use of medications. The second half of the book then addresses owner concerns, including management problems, aggression, affective disorder, elimination disorder, abnormal and repetitive behaviours and ageing-related problems. With an emphasis on helping first line veterinarians identify common presentations and offer help to owners, this book: - Addresses both normal and abnormal behaviour in cats and dogs from an emotion and cognition perspective; - Provides behaviour modification protocols, and drug doses and indications; - Includes handouts to be used both within the practice and with clients to help the veterinary surgeon manage the case. Written by international experts, the book translates their insights and experience into approaches taken in behavioural medicine. Also including the most up-to-date drugs, it is an important resource for both small animal veterinarians and students of veterinary medicine or animal behaviour.
