Hello and welcome to my presentation! I am Uwe Mayer, freelance Illustrator, author, designer and now also publisher of my children's picture book „DIE LAUFMASCHINE“, or in the English translation: “The Bicycling Baron". The book playfully tells the story of the invention of the bicycle from the very start. As a subject long overdue, it is original, based on fact and yet told in a humorous and original format with great illustrations throughout. DIE LAUFMASCHINE won the 1st prize from the State of Baden-Württemberg (Germany) for its original idea & concept in 2017. With further funding I was in the lucky position to not only create this important book project, but also publish it in 2019. Die Laufmaschine was nominated by the STIFTUNG BUCHKUNST for “Most Beautiful German Books" („Die Schönsten Deutschen Bücher“), Long List 2019. For this title I am offering foreign rights.

Higher education in a globalising world

        Community engagement and lifelong learning

        by Peter Mayo, Michael Osborne

This book focuses on current policy discourse in Higher Education, with special reference to Europe. It discusses globalisation, Lifelong Learning, the EU's Higher Education discourse, this discourse's regional ramifications and alternative practices in Higher Education from both the minority and majority worlds with their different learning traditions and epistemologies. It argues that these alternative practices could well provide the germs for the shape of a public good oriented Higher Education for the future. It theoretically expounds on important elements to consider when engaging Higher Education and communities, discussing the nature of the term 'community' itself. Special reference is accorded to the difference that lies at the core of these ever-changing communities. It then provides an analysis of an 'on the ground project' in University community engagement, before suggesting signposts for further action at the level of policy and provision.

        Der Knäckebrotkrach

Bei Oma und Opa fliegen die Fetzen

        by Konrad, Bob

        Mexique

        El nombre del barco

by María José Ferrada, Ana Penyas

On May of 1937, during the Spanish Civil War, 456 sons and daughters of republican fighters took the transatlantic boat Mexique, that set sail in Bordeau to arrive in Mexico. Previsions were that they would stay there three or four months, but the Republican defeat and the beginning of the Second World War changed that brief exile into a definitive one.  This books tells the story not only of those children, but also about the ship, being aware that we do not know how many boats try to cross our oceans every day, moving human beings that have full rights to a proper way of living and not to stand over a land that tears apart below their feet.

        In good taste

How Britain’s middle classes found their style

        by Ben Highmore, Christopher Breward

In postwar Britain, journalists and politicians prophesised that the class system would not survive a consumer culture where everyone had TVs and washing machines, and where more and more people owned their own homes. They were to be proved entirely wrong. In good taste charts how class culture, rather than being destroyed by mass consumption, was remade from flat-pack furniture, Mediterranean cuisine and lifestyle magazines. Novelists, cartoonists and playwrights satirised the tastes of the emerging middle classes, and sociologists claimed that an entire population was suffering from status anxiety, but underneath it all, a world was being constructed out of duvets, quiches and mayonnaise, easy chairs from Habitat, white emulsion paint and ubiquitous well-scrubbed, second-hand pine kitchen tables. This was less a world of symbolic goods and more an intimate environment alive with new feelings and attitudes.

        Niños

by María Jose Ferrada, María Elena Valdez

Thirty-four poems, one for each of the young children (all under the age of 14) that were executed, arrested or disappeared during the Chilean dictatorship. A book dedicated to all those little Chilean victims, but also to all the children that each day suffer the consequences of violence.

        Animal

        Poemas breves salvajes

by María José Ferrada, Ana Palmero

"Hidden in his horn he guards the secret of the jungle”. This might be as well the beginning of a novel, but it's an inspired riddle about wild animals. The illustrations in high varnish of this edition highlight the different skin textures of each animal and invites the reader to discover a new way of reading in a tactile and playful way.

        Liberating Praxis

Paulo Freire’s Legacy for Radical Education and Politics

        by Mayo, P.

Comments on Liberating Praxis: Arguably the most comprehensive and, in my estimation, most accurate account of Paulo Freire’s life, legacy and praxis – both his intellectual contributions and the application of his philosophy in various educational sites – has thankfully been published in paperback. Peter Mayo’s exceptional book is an essential pre-requisite for anyone wanting to engage in a serious study of Freire and/or the theoretical foundations of critical, and revolutionary critical, education. Congratulations to Mayo and Sense Publishers for making this valuable book more accessible to readers. Paula Allman, author of Revolutionary Social Transformation. Democratic Hopes, Political Possibilities and Critical Education and Critical Education Against Global Capitalism. Karl Marx and Revolutionary Critical Education A brilliant and comprehensive analysis of Freire’s work From the Foreword by Henry A. Giroux, McMaster University …Mayo’s critique takes on an even more distinctive cast insofar as it is linked to the analysis of the intensification of globalisation and the phenomenon of neocolonialism. Drawing on diverse works by Fanon, Said, Rodney, Foucault and Freire himself, Mayo weaves a complex discourse on pedagogy, social difference, multiethnicity, the canon, and the subaltern. Gloria Lauri Lucente, Journal of Mediterranean Studies This is an enormously informative and engaging book for anyone who claimsto be a critical pedagogue …I find this book an invaluable resource. Threading Freire’scontribution through each chapter, Mayo identifies a wide array of peoplewho have engaged with his work in contexts around the world. However, more than that, he offers stimulating challenges for our times by considering the ongoing usefulness of Freire to his region, the Mediterranean and to specific projects in which he has actively engaged in praxis … Margaret Ledwith, Educational Action Research The present book has been written by an admirer and connoisseur of Freire, one who has had first-hand access to the relevant sources. Mayo makes brilliant use of his material in what amounts to a highly interesting and insightful study. Mohammed Sabour, International Journal of Contemporary Sociology A meticulous piece of work that updates and weaves Freire's thought with that of other critical educators and philosophers, producing a text of great clarity and valuable insight. Mayo's exploration of the concept of 'reinvention' and the concrete application of Freire's ideas to his own context constitutes an excellent example of praxis in the emancipatory education in which he engages. This work substantially advances the understanding of adult education for transformative ends. Nelly Stromquist, University of Southern California ...[A] path-finding work by one of the world's leading Freirean scholars. The current political climate and the intensification of Neoliberalism as a global strategy of exploitation demands that we take Paulo Freire's legacy to heart, and Mayo's treatment of Freire's pedagogy and politics makes this urgently clear. It also sets the terms of the debate for how educators can proceed apace in taking up the struggle for social transformation. Peter McLaren, Graduate School of Education and Information Studies UCLA This book is an excellent antidote to many common misuses and misunderstandings of Freire’s work. Mayo firmly roots Freire in an emancipatory politics that is all-too-often oversimplified as “left” or “progressive.” Mayo brings a sensitive and thorough hand to this exposition and, what’s more, he demonstrates one aspect of the very “praxis” that is his focus, both by applying Freirian thinking to his own local context of the Mediterranean (Chapter 5) as well as by describing a handful of concrete projects (Chapter 6). Chris Cavanagh, Convergence It is in chapter five and six that Mayo provides the most significant original insight into Freire’s work and the uses of it. In chapter five, entitled “Reinventing Freire in a Southern Context: The Mediterranean” he shows the ways in which Freire’s work is indeed not a “one shoe fits all strategy, which has been a feature of the dominant neoliberal, neo-colonial, and technical rational discourse in education” (p. 103). Through showing the success of applying Freirian concepts to a diverse population that Freire never directly addressed, Mayo shows the ways Freire translates into different contexts. Mayo maps Freire’s context onto his own Mediterranean context to show the ways in which Freire’s thought can address calls for learning about the other, inclusive language, and multicentric curriculum. Karen Sihra, Paideusis This is a short book which offers a wide overview of Freire's work: it is written by an author who has spent many years studying his writings and who has considerable sympathy with them. As an introduction to Freire, it is comprehensive and would prove useful to recommend as a text to students or educators who are unfamiliar with the body of Freire's work.Peter Jarvis, International Journal of Lifelong Education In the second half of Liberating Praxis, Peter Mayo introduces his own struggles and dreams and, in so doing, honors the man he writes about and whose final assignment (‘Reinvent me’) inspires some of us to live life and go about our business as if every day were our last. WALKING TALKING. On the road in Ireland's wild west

        by Helga Kaffke, Gabriele Berthel

In the art scene of Schwerin their names were as well known as the State Theater, the museum or the castle of that city – Helga Kaffke, painter; Gabriele Berthel, author. That was during the last quarter of the past century. In the cultural news of the current capital of the county their names can’t be found. Both artists haven’t lived in Germany for more than twenty years. First they looked for the centre of their lives in France – and then found it – since the millennium – on the North-West coast of Ireland, in Mayo. They settled there, got married, worked. “May the road rise to meet you, may the wind be always at your back.” This old Irish blessing didn’t always keep its promise: the wind was often a gale and shook “the old house that rose out of the rocks”. The two artists counteracted this with their passion: for life, for painting, for literature. They had their talents and a backpack full of knowledge and experience, gathered at the colleges in Leipzig – tied forever to their country of birth, from which they had become estranged. The painter Helga Kaffke died in the winter of 2017. Since her death her spouse Gabriele Berthel shares her life with thousands of pages. Watercolours, colour on paper, portraits of landscapes, people and animals, in Kaffke-style. Kaffke-style is a mark of quality. Nobody painted watercolours like her: falling lines, sloping verticals, seemingly so chaotic, one already imagines the fall of Carthage – and yet somewhere a glimpse of sky remains. Magnificent. Gabriele Berthel paints with words; equally magnificent and emotional until it hurts. She paints in prose and poetry, mixes fairytale and reality, and covers earthly realism with melancholy. Thus a book is created, in a remote place of the world where in comparison to sky and sea a person appears to be a dwarf. A book about love and life and the strength to endure it, for every place in world. “In this place her life was always blowing in the wind – jacket like trousers between two brittle poles. And she keeps still, facing the earth – she knows it well – it was her life worth.” Helga Kaffke. Gabriele Berthel. For a long time their names had vanished from the cultural news. This is about to change. In Schwerin and other places.

        Beating Burnout at Work

Why Teams Hold the Secret to Well-Being and Resilience

        by Paula Davis

A first-of-its-kind, science-backed toolkit takes a holistic approach to burnout prevention by helping individuals, teams, and leaders build resilience and thrive at work.Burnout has become one of the most talked about workplace topics, and its impact is far-reaching. The 24/7 pace of work, constant demands, and scant resources can easily put busy professionals on a path to burnout, a cycle that has only accelerated during the COVID-19 pandemic. Burnout affects the health and well-being of the entire organization, yet most attempts to help focus on quick-fix strategies aimed at individuals. Something is missing. In Beating Burnout at Work: Why Teams Hold the Secret to Well-Being and Resilience, Paula Davis, founder of the Stress & Resilience Institute, provides a new framework to help organizations prevent employee burnout.Davis's research-driven, fast-reading, and actionable book is the first of its kind to explore a new solution to the burnout problem at work: a comprehensive approach focused on building the resilience of teams of all sizes. Davis argues that teams, and their leaders, are uniquely positioned to create the type of cultures that are needed to prevent burnout. In Beating Burnout at Work, Davis shares stories from her work coaching, teaching, and training leaders and teams of all sizes, and she explores:How she navigated her own burnout as a lawyer, and how that led her to study burnout and launch a business with the aim of helping organizations and their employees become more resilient; How teams and leaders can utilize simple, science-backed strategies to create cultures that promote resilience and well-being and reduce burnout; How the Mayo Clinic, one of the most renowned medical centers in the world, has developed a powerful model to reduce burnout in its organization; How organizations dealing with high-stress challenges, including the US Army, work to increase resilience in a systemic way; andHow the German company trivago is piloting a new approach to work amid COVID-19 in order to increase team connection and resilience.Solving the burnout puzzle requires a systemic approach. In Beating Burnout at Work, Davis offers an actionable method to help leaders create cultures of well-being and resilience in their organizations.

        Learning with Adults

        A Critical Pedagogical Introduction

        by English, L. M.

Winner! 2013 Cyril O. Houle Award For Outstanding Literature in Adult Education given by the American Association for Adult and Continuing Education (AAACE). “A priceless resource ...The time is ripe for writing a manifesto of adult education as social transformative learning in the twenty-first century and implement all sorts of experiments in adult education that may help transform the world. This book is a robust contribution to such conversation.”-- International Journal of Lifelong Education (Issue 32(6)) “A quite interesting book, written by two well-known authors, who have been publishing together in recent years, while carrying on their professional activities in different continents … English and Mayo remind us what education and educators should strive for. In a way, they propose a manifesto for education, leading us to question the ways in which the world is and to imagine how it could and should be … this work presents a writing style that is most accessible to a wide range of readers, thus contributing, in some way, to restore the hope in “a better world” as a result of the transformative capacity of adult education. Undoubtedly, it is a fundamental book on the analytical, critical and emancipatory perspectives over the adult education. This is a book to read, to reflect and, perhaps, to inspire us to act.” -- European Journal for Research on the Education and Learning of Adults, Vol 5, No 1, 2014 "This book is written at a time when our own field of adult education is under assault from a variety of capitalist and neoconservative forces pressuring us... to turn away from the causes of criticality, lifelong learning, and education for freedom. Rather than succumb to these pressures, we have hope that our long term goals of education for life and living can and will be accomplished alongside professional and vocational education. It offers new insight into what is a very dark moment of our human civilization." -- From the preface by Dr Carlos Alberto Torres, Professor, GSEIS, Director, Paulo Freire Institute, University of California at Los Angeles "The book offers decidedly critical and international perspectives on various aspects of adult education, especially on state, citizenship and neoliberal policies. Critical in both content and method, it is at the same time the part of the collective work needed to advance the Belém call to action by furthering awareness and capacity in the field of adult education." -- Dr Katarina Popovic, Professor,Universität Duisburg-Essen, University of Belgrade & DBB International "In the midst of diminishing resources and growing inequalities, English and Mayo provide an incisive and much needed critique of adult education in ways that highlight not only its historical and philosophical roots but also its major significance to the practice of democracy. In a direct challenge to the neoliberal accountability craze, Learning with Adults offers a rigorous political reading of the field—one that systematically challenges oppressive educational policies and practices, while affirming an emancipatory vision of civic engagement. Truly an informative treatise that sheds new light on the education of adults." Dr Antonia Darder, Professor & Leavey Presidential Endowed Chair in Education Loyola Marymount University Los Angeles "Leona English and Peter Mayo challenge hegemonic assumptions and ideas, while offering a constructive alternative based on the principle of working with learners and not just for them. Their analysis is accessible enough for newcomers to the field, while the authors’ wide-ranging coverage and radical approach provide refreshing and challenging messages for the most experienced adult educator. Up-to-date, genuinely international and passionately committed, Learning with Adults is a great book." - Dr John Field, Professor, University of Stirling Cover design by Annemarie Mayo

        Connemara Mollie

        An Irish Journey on Horseback

        by Hilary Bradt

An account of a journey through western Ireland made in 1984, fulfilling a childhood dream of a long-distance ride. The story centres on the growing bond between the author and her Connemara pony, Mollie and the many challenges that they face before the tragic conclusion in the mountains of Kerry. It is also a portrait of rural Ireland before the "Celtic Tiger" era, built up from conversations with the local people. The journey takes them through Counties Galway, Mayo, Clare and Kerry, the obstacles to their progress ranging from bogs, stone walls, and the River Shannon. "I've never tried hitchhiking with a horse before" comments the author. "It's not easy." She travelled with no set route, extending her backpacking knowledge acquired in the Andes to horse packing, "seeing the obvious advantage of climbing mountains on someone else's legs and using another's back for the packing."

People and Technology in the Workplace

by National Academy of Engineering; Commission on Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education; National Research Council

Quick introduction of new technology is essential to America's competitiveness. But the success of new systems depends on their acceptance by the people who will use them. This new volume presents practical information for managers trying to meld the best in human and technological resources. The volume identifies factors that are critical to successful technology introduction and examines why America lags behind many other countries in this effort. Case studies document successful transitions to new systems and procedures in manufacturing, medical technology, and office automation--ranging from the Boeing Company's program to involve employees in decision making and process design, to the introduction of alternative work schedules for Mayo Clinic nurses. This volume will be a practical resource for managers, researchers, faculty, and students in the fields of industry, engineering design, human resources, labor relations, sociology, and organizational behavior.
