Making home explores the figure of the orphan child in a broad selection of contemporary US novels by popular and critically acclaimed authors Barbara Kingsolver, Linda Hogan, Leslie Marmon Silko, Marilynne Robinson, Michael Cunningham, Jonathan Safran Foer, John Irving, Kaye Gibbons, Octavia Butler, Jewelle Gomez and Toni Morrison. The orphan child is a continuous presence in US literature, not only in children's books and nineteenth-century texts, but also in a variety of genres of contemporary fiction for adults. Making home examines the meanings of this figure in the contexts of American literary history, social history and ideologies of family, race and nation. It argues that contemporary orphan characters function as links to literary history and national mythologies, even as they may also serve to critique the limits of literary history, as well as the limits of familial and national belonging.

Governance is among the most used of new ideas in the social sciences, most notably in the fields of political science, public administration, sociology, social and political theory. As ever, debates within disciplines rarely transcend disciplinary boundaries. This volume, newly available in paperback, brings together authors from these fields to elaborate on the development of governance analysis in new conceptions of political and democratic communication. It not only seeks to identify, describe and evaluate the contribution of each discipline to a theory of communicative governance, but also lays the foundation of a multidisciplinary framework for studying the mediation in communicative governance of societal concerns for effectiveness, order and participation. The book is theoretical and comparative, drawing on authors and research in Britain, Denmark, France, Germany, the Netherlands and the US. Das Buch mit dem Titel ADVANCED BJJ (BJJ FÜR FORTGESCHRITTENE) ist vollständig illustriert und stellt auf übersichtliche Weise die Ausdrucksformen dieser Kampfkunst dar, um dem Schüler bei seiner Entwicklung zu unterstützen. Ursprünglich war Jiu-Jitsu eine Kampfkunstart der Samurai, ehemalige Krieger, die nur schlecht oder überhaupt nicht bewaffnet waren und sich gegen die stärkeren und gut ausgerüsteten Feinde verteidigen mussten. Jiu-Jitsu bildet somit den Ursprung der japanischen Kampfkunst, zu der auch Judo und Aikido gehören, und hat Karate und andere Kampfkunstarten geprägt. Im Jiu-Jitsu werden Techniken der Hiebe, Greifen, Fesselgriffe, Würfe und des Ausweichens angewandt. Auf geistiger Ebene lehrt Jiu-Jitsu Selbstsicherheit, verbessert die Selbstachtung sowie die Konzentrationsfähigkeit und baut Stress ab. Jiu-Jitsu macht sich bei Anwendung der Hebelkraft das Wissen der Physik und der menschlichen Anatomie zu eigen, um so jeden Angreifer mit dem kleinstmöglichen Aufwand von Körperkraft zu bezwingen. Das brasilianische Jiu-Jitsu unterscheidet sich vom traditionellen Jiu-Jitsu insofern, als dass es sich in einer anderen Umgebung und als Reaktion auf dementsprechend andere Bedürfnisse entwickelt hat. Dies erforderte zusätzliche Techniken. Techniken, die im Bodenkampf und im Umgang mit Gewalt im modernen Alltag relevant sind. Heute ist das brasilianische Jiu-Jitsu sowohl für seinen exzellenten Boden-, seinen niveaureichen Wettkampf und seine herausragende Teilnehmer bekannt, wie auch für seinen Ansatz des taktischen Denkens und Manövrierens. Der siebenfache Weltmeister Fabio Duca Gurgel do Amaral begann mit dem Training von Jiu-Jitsu im Alter von 13 Jahren und erhielt mit 19 den schwarzen Gürtel. Zusammen mit seinem Lehrmeister Romero Jacaré ist er der Mitbegründer des zweifachen Weltmeister Alliance-Teams, das 40 Akademien weltweit betreibt, die von Venezuela bis nach New York, von Finnland bis nach Deutschland reichen. Gurgel unterrichtet weiterhin an seiner eigenen Akademie in Sao Paulo und gibt weltweit Seminare und Lehrgänge. Er ist Präsident der Professional League of Jiu-Jitsu. Eine englische Ausgabe für Nordamerika erschien im Februar 2007. Eine tschechische Ausgabe ist für Ende 2011 geplant
